There are games that will always be remembered, simply because they were "just that good" (for example: Contra) or they perhaps they were some of the biggest pieces of shit the world has ever seen (like the E.T. atari 2600 game). My question is: What games from this console generation (this includes PC games too, even though the PC can't really be defined by the idea of "console generations") do you think will always be remembered?

Also, what do you think will be forgotten? Let's face it, even with a system as recent as the PS2 more than 98% of its gallery has been completely forgotten short of lists or some review someone did back in 2004 or so that has been archived.

I'll be tossing in some of my thoughts in a bit, but for now let's hear nothing about Skyrim; it's being sucked off around the net enough for the moment.

SKYRIMMMM!!!! Lol, jk, although it will be remembered. But I think the CoD series... If for nothing else, it will be remembered for the massive amount of people that play it. I think Gran Turismo 5 will be quickly forgotten, and so will the newer Need for Speed games. Minecraft will always be remembered I think, so will a couple of Halo games.

I think I'll say Skyward Sword, as this is seen as the Zelda game that has trascended Ocarina of Time and is probably the best game the Wii has to offer.

If none of the aforementioned holds true, it will still be remembered as the first game to have a properly working motion control system on the Wii.

COD4 will be remembered as being the 1st modern warfare title which started the cash cow business.
Halflife2 will be remembered for using physics to boost gameplay in an FPS.

I Think most modern COD games other then the first modern warfare will be remembered about as well as someone would remember adden 03 That is to say to not at all unless it was their first.

Games that will be remembered however , battlefield 3 i see having a long lasting multiplayer life and in my opinion the strong multiplayer coupled with the nice engine will ferment it in the minds of pc gamers at least (although thats got more to do with the difficulties of having a true consoles community).

I think portal 2 will be fondly remembered too.

Sonic Generations may be the title everyone remembers for the resurrection of the sonic series (but that will depend on the subsequent titles)
If gaming is taken seriously as an art form, No Russian (completely by accident) was a pretty interesting (in my opinion) look at peer pressure (particularly in the case of 'bully initiation tests'), and the mere fact that a US soldier is gunning down civilians at all makes it a more interesting case than most other Call of Duty levels. Although I've never played it, I'd actually really like No Russian to go down in history. The rest of the game (and series after 4), though, can go f*** itself.

Gears of War kinda started and defined 3rd person cover shooter. I imagine that's not going to go away any time soon (and that's a good thing IMO, I like them).

Portal will live on for a long time in quotes and memes (both for good, and for bad). The voice acting from those games should become something of a gold standard for all games to aspire to. Brilliant, wacky, and clever.

Was Mass Effect the first game to have a voice actor for player-selected choices? I want to say that mass effect will be remembered, but that's kinda personal bias creeping in. :p

Fallout 3 will always be on my "games you need to play" list. It was just too good for many reasons.Portal for how big it exploded. Tf2 for how much Effing money you can make off hats!

Portal will be remembered, because the whole damn world knows every line in that game, from how much it's been passed around, and that's not even mentioning it's powerful addictive properties as a game.

Fallout 3 will be remembered, for bringing us a large open world, with many choices, and freedoms to play and act as you choose, given very few confines. Other games have done this, but none have done them better.

Bioshock will be remembered for it's objectivist teachings, stunningly idealized locations, and enrapturing trick on the psyche.

I'd love to say God of War would be remembered, but I think the series would be more cult hit than classic. There's plenty of memorable games, but many have to be considered as a whole, and not each issue can stand up to the stress of scrutiny. Like CoD, or Assassin's Creed, where you can't really consider them individually, but have to do so as a whole.

Cant really add to what others have said.

what i will say is this generation of games have spawned a lot of cult classics, ones that we will enjoy returning to in the future. especially some indie games like braid and amnesia etc will be forever remebered to those who were lucky (and brave in amnesia's case :p) enough to play them.

Sadly, I think this the Ultimate Alliance series will be forgotten. Too bad too, it came in strong but UA2 took a sort of misstep and now it's unlikely we'll see another one. Back when the PS2/GC was bowing out there were the X-Men Legend games which came and went and while there was little fanfare, I can't help but feel they were better received and, will be better remembered than Ultimate Alliance. I also think both Marvel vs Capcom 3 variants will...well, they won't be forgotten but they won't be nearly as huge down the line as Marvel vs Capcom 2.

What will be remembered the most positively though? My guess is...

Assassin's Creed 2 or Brotherhood, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, World of Warcraft, Fallout 3, and possibly Skyward Sword and Skyrim (both of which I still have yet to play). Saint's Row 2 may also be lovingly remembered.

I think Condemned will be this generation's Manhunt. I can also see Final Fantasy XIII as this generations Quest 64 (either you loved it or you absolutely hated it). Luckily, I think this generation avoided a Shaq-Fu, Superman 64 or, E.T. Some people may put Duke Nukem Forever in one of those slots but I think it will just fade into obscurity like most of the other shooters from this gen. If any of them are close to the three hyper-fails listed above, it would likely be Too Human which I think could fit nicely in the Shaq-Fu mold.

I don,t think allot of smaller games are going to be forgotten.

I think Elder Scrolls will be remembered more than any specific game in the franchise. The same is likely true of the "Fallout" series. Both have endured for a long time and hit a degree of mainstream success.

I think Mass Effect and Dragon Age will at least make it into memory as footnotes that people remember.

I think Call Of Duty is going to be akin to "Sonic The Hedgehog", or at least the modern warfare variants (it's been around for a long time). Basically the peak of success it's enjoyed right now is going to be it's high point, it's going to degerate, but still see
games being cranked out by increasingly incompetant design teams hoping it will "hit" again. Like Sonic which was hugely successful for it's day, as the number of gamers increase CoD's sale's records will be surpassed and it will largely be remembered as a fallen titan that had the life sucked out of it.

World Of Warcraft is going to join Everquest as being one of the standards which all MMOs are going to be compared to. Probably *THE* standard due to the number of players compared to influential games of the sort that came before it.

I also think this is a generation where the faces behind games, rather than the games themselves, have started to become more well known to the gaming populance at large. I think due to the growing popularity of the medium we're probably going to see some of these people becoming enduring icons along with the games they created or supported, sadly most of them will remembered negatively. I suspect in a decade or three we're going to see contreversy in the industry when gamers decide to pull a "Westboro Baptist Church" at the funeral of Bobby Kotick and keep vandalizing his gravestone or something. One thing that defines this generation is the raw hatred for some of the producers and business practices, and the fact that specific names are recognized in connection with it.
