I actually pretty much always sympathize with the villians, they are usually evil for a reason, and that reason is usually something that happend at their expense.

OP: Probably the Ghouls in Fallout 3, not all of then were insane...
Sure, they may look like hideous zombies from an old monster flick, but their hearts, their souls, their tears are all very much human. So if you see one of the Capitol Wasteland's many ghouls, leave your prejudice at the door and your pistol in its holster. Ah, yes, one important caveat, kiddies... those feral ghouls who prefer the dark, damp underground? They basically are mindless zombies, so kill as many of 'em as you damn well please.

prototype, your a monster in that game, they had to make the militaty as monsterous as they could to try and make you feel less sorry for them but its a trick
.......Are you serious? What the military did in that game WAS monsterous killing people along with the infection, but I agree that the main character was more of a monster
because he let the virus loose but thats technically not the person or thing you play as.
what the military did is hardly worst then driving a tank around with the resulting lots of ppl you end up running over
And getting an achievement for it.
IMO, I'd have to say BioShock. Ryan was awesome, add that to the fact that Jack (I'm pretty sure that's his name) was his son. Watching him
bash his own dad's head in with a golf club
was heart-rending.

A well-developed villain is the key to telling a good story. Developing the main character is often not even as important as crafting a good villain with a deep personality/backstory/motivation (Bioshock is a good example).

I found most of the "bad guys" in GTAIV to be more likeable than Niko at points, especially when you're supposed to feel like a tragic and reluctant hero (being "forced" to do violence), though that's the whole fucking reason you're playing the game in the first place. Silly.

I'm surprised that no one has said Assassins Creed. Speaking of which, Assassins Creed. Once they explain themselves you almost feel a bit sorry for them. Almost.
One thing they did do well was characterise the gradual change in Altiair (though it doesn't stop him killing them)

Yes, it did seem very genuine. It was more of a gradual back and forth as the master keeps changing his mind, rather than some games where the hero just changes his mind instantly and totally switches his views. Drakengard 2 springs to mind.

The Helghast from the Killzone games.

Do some research on their backstory, and you'll immediately see why.
Whenever I played the first game, I thought they were badass. I did search their backstory and now I do kinda sympathize with them.

Also did the same thing for Magneto, and yep, him too.

I can't really agree on the super mutant thing because in all fairness, they do try and kill me whenever they see me and take prisoners.

EDIT: Oh yeah and the Templars. First, they're all badass looking. I think when I found out about them, I really wanted to sympathize with them, but something prevented me from doing that. Maybe because Altair was so badass and I found this out before I fought the final guy.

The enclave from fallout, couldn't they just kill president Eden and make colnel autumn president(he was against butchering the population) it would have been much more benificial, yet they blew em up.

Assassin's Creed, Town guards (not templars) their just doing their job protecting the town while you wander in stabbing them in the face, Also they must hate their trainers not giving them any combat training other than group up and hope you can attract a templar or two to help you out.

Evil Genius...but only because YOU are the badguys.

Real answer?

Uh...GTAIV. You play as an Eastern European douche who turns up, massacres thousands of innocent, hard-working bluecollar cops with families, and completley undos the last 100 years of Eastern Europeans proving to the world that they all weren't heathens, bandits and Jews. (DISCLAIMER: Back in the day, that really WAS a bad thing. They said it, not me)

From the get-go I sympathized with the cops and government in Mirror's Edge. Yes they were totalitarian, but they were just trying to make the city ordered and crime-free. Personally, if given a choice, I would live in that kind of city. It was clean, bright, and law-abiding, for the most part.

How many more times does he have to build a nice castle only to have his blocks smashed and coins stolen by an italian plumber?

I felt for the Guilty Roses from Project Sylpheed (I feel really bad since I can't remember their leader's name) since they didn't care much about the war, they were just loyal to Doris Egan, and then they die for her.

I liked Andrew Ryan in Bioshock. His ideas were great, it's just the people under him corrupted them.
Erm.. no, not really. His idea's where abit rubbish really as EVERY group of people will corrupt something given enough time. If you don't factor that into your social theories, your just closing your eyes to human nature.
