I know we've had various Street Fighter adaptations, Disney's recent Prince of Persia disaster and unfortunately Mortal Kombat Annihilation, but I think more games should be made into movies! There are so many games with excellent stories and huge fan bases, but for some reason Hollywood continues to churn out more and more soppy cliches, unnecessary gore porn and big budget explosions.

Devil May Cry and Legacy of Kain are two series that I'd love to see hit the big screen at some point; what about everyone else?

I thought the same thing... until I watched Wing Commander.

...my life has been a downward spiral ever since.

There is a rumour and various other posts around the internet about a DMC film. Soemone is, at the very least, thinking about making it.

However I tend to cringe a little bit when I see films based on games after all the disasters i've seen. The 3 Bloodrayne films, the Resident Evil films, Tekken, Mortal Kombat Annihilation, Street Fighter, Far Cry and a few more.

Until they make a decent one then i'm going to maintain that turning a game into a film is a terrible idea.

The problem is games already have a fan base and everyone who played said game already has their own memories of it. There is no pleasing a fan base and taking something a person has good memories about and changing it to suit a movie will not go down well.

Well most, if not all game-to-movie adaptations are rubbish. No matter what game you are using, the movie is going to be completely shit if you're not a fan of said game. So really, they are movies to please the fans but they can't even accomplish that most of the time.

But that doesn't really have to be a bad thing. Take Doom for example. Even the majority of Doom fans hated that movie. I hadn't played Doom much, but I hated it on my first viewing too. Basically just a bunch of stereotypes fighting mutants on Mars to the tune of a heavy metal soundtrack. THEN I realised how awesome that sounds! Even though I know it's a bad movie, and I should hate it... I just can't stop watching it. I've watched it about 100 times and it never gets boring! Even line of dialogue is so cliche and over-the-top that I can't help but love it. Apart from that woman who plays the sister, every line from her is like nails on a chalkboard.

I thought the first Resident Evil was fun too. I enjoyed it because I like science fiction and zombies... there's nothing much to it. No doubt it's probably terrible if you don't know what happens in any of the games. These types of movies are my guilty pleasure. They are utterly terrible, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I have a soft spot for bad movies.

So be warned before thinking your favourite game will also be an awesome movie. It will almost definitely be a pile of shit. But if that's what you like, then that's fair enough. I really really really did NOT want to see a Halo movie, because it's one of my favourite games and I didn't want to see it ruined. I think they stopped making it now, did they? I know they started but I'm pretty sure they cancelled it.

Go look up Uwe Boll, with such abominations to the movie industry such as House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark 1 & 2, Bloodrayne 1-3, Postal, Far Cry, and Rampage

Don't forget Doom and the Resident Evil movies. Is it possible to have a good video game movie? Sure, but the track record is very, very grim

Erm.. But what kind of film coul you possibly make out of Devil May Cry other than a soppy post-The Matrix cliche and big budget explosion?

I mean really, what's the Devil May Cry series about besides running around as a guy who can transform himself into a demon, fighting other demons with swords and guns?

Wouldn't shoehorning that premise into a movie production that is to be some sort of "Citizen Kane" be kind of convoluted and would most likely deviate terribly from the source material? (I.e a dude, wearing a reeeeeally goth-looking coat and kicking demon butt with swords and guns)

Devil May Cry is in my opinion a terribly fun series of videogames (well att least the first parts), but it's hardly known for it's "intriguing and intelligent story" now is it? It's known for... Well, "big budget explosions and sloppy cliches" quite frankly, it's just that there are so much of the big budget explosions, stylish violence that we as players don't really care about the shallowness of it all. And that's fine, but I doubt it'll be easily converted to the big screen and with good results.

If there were some way to outlaw movies made based on games, I would support that sucka to the grave. After all the awful movies Hollywood's burped out, I can't say another shot is the answer. "Doom"? "Mortal Kombat"? "King of Fighters"? "Tekken"? Jesus Marimba.... And don't get me started on those godawful Mila Jovovich vehicles they called "Resident Evil" ... Ugh..

Please... no more.

Sorry to disappoint you but honestly, games should never be turn into a film in the first place no matter what that game. Ok yes there are plenty of games with films like elements in it but as a film itself it just doesn't work since the gameplay elements are removed.

In my opinion I suppose Silent Hill came close but film reviewers hated it since it felt like you are watching someone playing game which me is how a game film is suppose to be.

Gotta agree 100% with the guilty pleasure; I love but hate most adaptations I've seen! What about if instead of turning DMC into a movie someone attempted to create a prequel to the games focusing on Sparda? There you've got some elements of a great story without necessarily having to ruin the game or people's memories of it.

And what I meant about the existing fan base was that production/distribution/marketing companies etc. already have a few demographics to aim at as a means of making big money or achieving box office success; there's no guarantee the fans are gonna love it, just that they'll most likely pay for it!

you know what. i have a solution to this. let japan make the live action versions of games from their country and do a voice dub for us. they seem to do it better. We can stick to our own country's ip

No, doesn't work that way and neither the other way around. Different media, that don't cooperate well.

You might disagree completely with me here, but I think the whole DMC series has a pretty awesome story. I wouldn't say it'd be a big budget explosion kinda film either. I'd see it as a more stylish Crouching Tiger style combat film... But with a few guns.

I personally love the whole 'son of a demon' idea, especially in that he has an evil twin too.

Video Games into movies will always be a disaster. As much as I want the Halo movie to come out I know my heart will be broken. Simply because no one really takes them seriously, they're always done horribly and it becomes a train wreck you can't look away from. I'm happier with the universe my video games have created and content with keeping it there.

Erm.. Devil May Cry actually has quite a bit of story to it.

It's spawned Anime and comics.

And it's penned in as an actual movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0932986/

There is quite a lot of lore to the DMC franchise if you took time to look beyond the swords, guns and jumping kills.

Gaming needs to be taken seriously as a medium before it should be attempted. When Silent Hill is the best film that has come out of video games and it was *suppose* to be based off the first game and really was the first and second game put together. Too many things were wrong with that film for me to enjoy it. Anyways though that's beside the topic. Most...ok fine just about ALL of the films made off of games are because Hollywood is bored and has no original ideas left and is using games and making a mockery of them.

Here's a little experiment:

The next time you watch a movie, or re-watch your favorite movie, imagine playing it verbatim as a video-game - every single bit of the movie is part of the game.

Think of how un-fun it would be. Of how jumbled the pace and game-play would be. Where's the boss fights, how long do you have to sit through dialogue scenes, or cut scenes, when or if do you actually get to explore the open-world of the game (movie), and how long is it from the start of the movie till the first bit you get to shoot a baddie?

Imagine 'Children of Men' (there's the stealth mission where you have to sneak out of the farm), or Pulp Fiction (as a point and click adventure game?)

This is basically the reverse of what happens when some poor sap is tasked with adapting a video-game into a movie, or a book into a movie, (or if they're a really really really poor sap, a movie into a book).

It's not that it can't be done right, it's just very difficult because video-games and movies are completely different forms of entertainment and of story telling.

Video-games are non-linear, you control the character(s), expected to be longer than a few hours. Movies have a beginning and play until the end, follow the character around, and do it usually in less that 240 mins.

Further more there are things you can do in books that don't work well in movies, and vice versa, so people who would adapt say, Half-Life 2, into a movie has to understand that it just wouldn't f***ing work. No one wants to watch a mute bearded man drive along a coastline, occasionally stopping to punt boxes into the ocean, for half a movie.

(wasn't sure if he was aloud to swear on this website)

Inb4 bioshock/halo movie...?

On topic though, i personally think that although there is some great source material to be had from video games, the transition from interactive, to non-interactive media is slightly too jarring for most franchises. Also, the core ideals are to radically different, with many games invoking player choice, and freedom to explore etc.

Film don't have that luxury, they have to create a solid story-line and play it out. Don't get me wrong: this isn't by any stretch inferior, and still allows for some creative design, it's just that creativity is out of the players/viewers reach.

I think Crysis 2 could work though, it's cinematic enough already.
