call of duty, not because its popular, but because of its generic gameplay, its rabid 12 year old fanboys that think they know everything about guns and the millitary, and its story which looks like it was directed by michael bay

Do game companies count? Because I refuse to go play Bioware games.
I guess so, Bioware is pretty popular. Although may I ask why that is? My sleepy curiosity wants to know. :p

OT: I used to hate on Portal, mainly because when I joined here, I was pretty much given a crash course in Cake memes and the fans were very rabid. Very. Although, that said, playing Portal 2 co-op has lessened that hate a lot for me lately. >>

Also, if I don't see at least 3 CoD/Halo answers on the first page, I'll eat my hat. XD
Does this still apply if I spam the first page? I want a video of you eating that hat. And then (about 12 hours later) an opinion piece on the merits of eating one's headwear.
No, it would not count.
Although I think I am going to have to eat a hat...no one has mentioned them yet. I won't be able to provide a video as I have nothing that can record that sort of thing but I can certainly make a thread about eating it.

Who knows? It could be either amusing or enlightening.
Or a testament to how bored I might be tomorrow, one or the other.
A journal of it would be entertaining.

Hour 4: I can feel it. The hat has finally entered my stomach. The acid inside is helpless against it, and can only muster up fashion criticisms. I dread the next step...there is little room in the passageways that follow. Oh why do I make promises on such trivial matters? Why do I follow through. And why did I chase the hat down with a bag of Doritos?

In truth i'm kinda suprised those certain two franchises (be sure to use ketchup Sassafrass) haven't been mentioned yet. And for everyone who is posting that they DON'T hate anything based on their popularity... Good for you but thats not what the thread is asking.

(So... like a baseball cap or what?)

EDIT: DAMNIT! WHY?!

I had a few games, but popularity isn't the only reason I despise them. Though aside from most current first person shooters, I kind of wish Final Fantasy XV would be made, not suck, and then the whole Final Fantasy franchise would fall off the face of the planet.

When you frame the question like that, very few people are going to admit to hating something because it's popular.

Consequently I don't hate anything for that reason, that would be stupid. How about games that haven't been released yet? Would that count?

Wow. Almost exactly what I was thinking word for word. Could not agree more.

This, this, so much this. I have never hated a game just because it's popular. I've played popular games and liked them (Halo, Bejeweled and other "casual" games, et cetera) and I've played popular games and disliked them (Call of Duty, Farmville). I do not go in with a set 'like' or 'dislike' just because something's popular. Assassin's Creed, for instance, is one of my favorite franchises. That's popular. I still adore it.

I refuse to play Mass Effect because of everyone I know being all "Dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, you have to play this."
...So a bunch of your friends are recommending it to you, therefore you don't want to play it? Perhaps I'm reading this wrong, but that doesn't make sense to me. Care to explain?

It's more of a secondary reason, but I really can't stand Bioshock. I wish I had that $5 back.

Actually no. The closest I ever came to was with CoD. But that didn't even go there, it was more "I simply don't care about it" than hate.

Then I did try it and now I can rant in people's faces about how much I hate it.

Satsuki Yumizuka from Tsukihime/Melty Blood? Yes, I believe my avatar is. It was a fan art image I found a while back.

Yay, always fun to find another Type-Moon fan in some (any) capacity. <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.230960-TYPE-MOON-reviews-Melty-Blood>Try as I <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.223721-TYPE-MOON-Review-anniversary-Fate-Stay-Night>might, they still don't get much exposure.

Not playing something because it's popular is just as bad as playing it because it's popular.
It's kind of like my "counterculture is still dictated by culture" argument.

That being said, I cannot, for the life of me, understand why Call of Duty is so wildly popular. They're solid games, but what is it that sets them apart so?

I don't do the "it's popular, so it sucks" thing.

Now, there are certain fanbases that I hold mostly in contempt. And I've certainly been mystified by the popularity of something sucky before. But "it's popular, so it sucks" is generally the tactic of someone trying to be edgy.

I don't find myself hating on any series due to it's popularity.. blatant and cultish fanboyism, however, does tend to turn me off of a game though. This is probably why I find it difficult to enjoy most Valve titles.

Seriously speaking, no-one hates a game series because of its popularity- they hate it because of its FANBASE. Like me and Halo or Modern Warfare.
