1988 here.

Apparently Final Fantasy II, King's Quest IV and Super Mario Bros. 2 were all released in 1988. Not to shabby.
I played King's Quest IV on release. It was TEN 5 1/4" floppy disks. And you had to change out disks like every other screen. I kept them in stacks on the desk so I could constantly rotate them out as I played. There was no continuous world. Each screen was confined and had to load. I played it on my Tandy 1000, and I had to ask my parents to spend like $100+ to upgrade the RAM from 384K to 640K, because King's Quest IV was really demanding and required 512K minimum. I told them I needed it for school.

My current computer has 50,000 times that much memory (32G). So basically, it would take 50,000 Tandy 1000's stacked up to equal the power of my current computer. Let's say that Tandy case was 6" x 24" x 24" in size. That's 2 cubic feet. 50,000 of those would be 100,000 cubic feet. That would be the size of a like a 4-story building (50' x 50' x 40').

...Well, that was hardly a highlight, now was it?

But in all seriousness, though, I've given 2600 E.T. another shake recently, having read on GameFAQs just precisely what one's supposed to do in that goddamned thing, and, for real?

It's not actually a bad game.

No, stop laughing, damn it, I'm serious!

I mean, yes, it's probably still way too random and annoying for its own good, what with FBI agents you can't possible dodge and holes you really can't avoid falling into... but all things considered, it was incredibly creative and original for an Atari 2600 game.

Probably too creative and original for its own sake, in fact; I'm pretty sure what killed it was the fact that reading the damn manual was not an option but a requirement at a time when most games were as intuitive and easy to figure out as one went along as Megamania, Worm War I or Pitfall!.

I seriously could have been born 10 years later and not missed anything as far as games go.

//Born in 1980. I played a bit of Pac-Man, Centipede, and Missile Command... though I was stuck on an Atari 2600 (and a 286) well into the 90s.
Well, at least the 286 played Hack, Supaplex, and Ultima 5. Those were pretty awesome.

Space Invaders!
Same here. Apparently Konami and Nintendo released their first arcade games that year too with Block Game and Computer Othello respectively

This is awkward. 1969, so Lunar Lander and Space Travel stand out. Not that there was a lot of competition that year.

Just a bunch of obscure ones; Zelda 2, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Punch Out!!, Double Dragon, Contra, Castlevania 2... 1987 was kind of a bad year.
