Games Reviews vs Youtube Commenters

You get finished with a game and just loved the hell out of it and decided to look at others people's reviews on Youtube to see if anyone else shared your opinion. Then you make the horrible choice of looking at the comments section and being blasted with people saying how horrible the game it, how the review is only being payed off to say it was good, and how people who like this game are retards that deserve nothing but slow painful deaths. You want to look away, but it's like looking at the site of a terrible car crash and you can't bring yourself to do so. Then after your done, you feel depressed and betrayed, how could you let that game convince you it was good when it was lying to you the whole time. Then after a while you play the game again to prove to yourself how terrible it is and find that you like it as much as the first time you played it. Then you get angry at yourself for letting yourself get sucked up into the negativity that the Youtube comments section creates and swear never to let happen again...and then you play another game you really like and you know where this is going. Thus, a viscous cycle is born.

So my question to you my fellow Escapists is how do you react when insane Youtube commentators talk crap about games you like. Do your simply ignore them, try and bring them to reason, or join them in their madness until you snap out of it like I unfortunately do a lot of the time.

I used to, but with age and maturity comes perspective. I had to ask myself, I didn't make this game, I have no stake in it. How does it affect ME that someone said negative things about this game? Name any game you like, and I guarantee there's one person in the world who absolutely hates it.

You must have a very fragile ego if you need other Youtube reviewers to validate your game purchase. Doubly so if one person's negative opinion makes you start hating the game. One thing you realize when you get out of high school, is that people who tell you what you can and can't like aren't worth the time of day. High school is a time where people are starving for validation, but don't know how to get any. So they do the next best thing, they elevate themselves by putting other people down.

This to a T.
I tend to ignore most "just because" haters. If it's not their thing, its not their thing, but it doesn't have to stop being my thing.
That being said, if it's a game I want to enjoy, I tend to overlook it's flaws to the point that I don't see them at all, which is why I don't usually look at the reviews of a game I'm going to buy or movie I want to see. But if a reviewer (and for the sake of this thread, commenters) point out a genuine flaw (or at least a personal problem I agree with) then I simply go "Oh, I guess that is a problem. Still great, though." If I hate a game, it's because I have a problem with it, not somebody else.

Act like an elitist: Ahaha look that those plebs with shit taste!

I also will think the same thing about reviewers if they don't share my opinion. Just for the record my opinion > your opinion. Though in reality I'm not being serious and understand people have different taste and mine tends to fall in the niche category. They can have their own opinions that are different from mine and it doesn't affect what I like.

It's just an exaggeration. I would never really let a bunch of Youtube commentators and game reviews change my opinion on a game. I love Alice Madness Returns and must game reviewers don't like that game. I just get a bit depressed when I see people go out of their way to be negative about things they don't like or just troll people. It would be easier just not to look at them, but like I said before it's like a horrible car crash that you can't look away from. I'm just interested in hearing how other people respond to idiotic comments. Nice to see how you observe this topic, I totally agree.

Well to be frank I dont tend to read comments on videos because a lot of them arent said very well. A person can have a really good point but ultimately its defeated when they personally attack someone because it shows a lack of maturity. I welcome all forms of intelligent and meaningful discussion but thats rare in a world where anyone can make any kind of statement with no conseqences for their actions.

I guess Im just to old for that nonsense anymore. I dont need random people, let alone professional "reviewers", to validate why I like or dislike a game. What I do need is informed information to aid in my purchasing decisions and frankly most reviews dont give that to me. To many reviewers approach it as if theres a one size fits all kind of gamer. People like different things which means reviewers need to expand beyond giving an opinion for one audience. Its ok to not like an aspect of the game whether it be the art style or certain mechanics. Its not ok to say its just straight up bad and everyone should avoid the game because of it because a certain audience might like that art style or mechanic

With a term like "try and bring them to reason", you're sounding far worse than the average YouTube commenter to my mind.

I ignore them. Why let other peoples' opinion on a video game effect me? I like certain games, I dislike others. As does everyone else. If I got in arms about people not liking what I like, well, that would just be silly and a complete waste of time. Besides, opinions are what differentiate people. If everyone liked the same shit, and shared the same beliefs, life would be fairly boring.

I try and avoid YouTube comments where I can, but there is always going to be someone out there who says or does something so mind-bogglingly, pants on head retarded that you can't help doing something to put them in their place and point out the absurd amount of flaws in their argument. Call it nothing more than ego stroking, but there is a type of car crash mentality to those comments that personally keeps me coming back to show a bunch of differing opinions (whom can occasionally loosely be defined as "idiots") what for, to make myself feel superior. Egotistical? Yes. Satisfying? Fuck yes.

Also don't think this issue is limited to video game comment threads. Try being a hardcore Macklemore fan like I am, who is constantly surrounded by thousands of people who only know Thrift Shop and don't seem to get the joke.

I have an extension that replaces all the comments on Youtube with "Hodor". Ever since then I have found the comment section infinitely more pleasant.

YouTube comments... I try to ignore them, I try to tell myself that they are not representative of any real part of humanity, but every now and then I accidentally read one, and I think, 'How could someone sink so low, intellectually, morally, emotionally?' I know that people don't necessarily represent themselves accurately there, that they often just go for the shock factor, but even that displays a certain depravity that I find depressing.

I ignore them. I enjoy'd the game, why do I need to force others to enjoy it too? Not to mention defending the "honour" of companies is retarded anyways.

Youtube commenters? I call that section The Drosspit of the Internet for a reason.

I occasionally read the comments for a chuckle, not to seek some form of validation.

Youtube comments... just don't, that is all.
One day google might invest a spit of money to proper filters but until then that whole area is a death trap for your sanity.

Also looking up reviews for games you already like is usually a very bad idea, we all know this comes from a desire of validation and we all know that is one to be put on the side as it never leads to anything beneficial.

What's the difference between these two again?

I continue being amazed by people who take YouTube comments to heat so much. Way, way too often do I see people going "Well, I looked at the comments on YouTube and " Yes. We know. I thought everybody knew. Apparently not. It's YouTube. I mean, come on, there isn't really a better response to that - YouTube comments are infamous around the Web.

For the record, how I deal with this is simple - I don't. I rarely look at the comment sections but more importantly, I don't look up reviews of a game I've played and liked (or whatever).

Now that I think about it...why would I? I've already played the game, I don't need an outside opinion on it any more. Probably why I never come close to the comments, too - I don't need their opinions as well.
