Do you find some games just take a bit more to get into, and once you do, you really enjoy it, but no one else seems to understand it, or you just enjoy for the plain hell of it?

I seem the find that with the Dynasty Warriors series. I love those games, sure there may not be that much to them, but they are just simple quick fun, especially when you add in co-op. Seeing as I bought DW:Gundam 2 for the PS2 a few days ago(brings together both of the things I like), I go and look up reviews for it, and most if not all, reviews said, 3-5 as a score, and complaining about the "blandness" and "poor voice acting", where as the actually normal people were giving it 7-8.

Yeh Dynasty Warriors is like a game not made for critics. It isn't impressive polt wise or techincily(sp) but for the average person out there, they can be great fun after you get used to it.

Paradox Strategy Games, their not newbie friendly (altough they've gotten better), often overwhelm the player with messages and alerts before you set the alert system properly, have too many things to do and too many ways to make mistakes, often have buggy or incomplete or simply inadequate tutorials, and are often severely bugged upon realease.

And yet their games are very, very good, and if you go to their boards you will see a frightningly active and motivated fan base.

Once you get used to them, once you pass the difficulty curve, they are wonderful.

Harvest Moon. You tell someone "It's a game where you farm." And they think it's lame. But every person I got to actually sit down and play it was hooked, even friends who normally don't play any video games went out and bought it.

I think Silent Hill 2 is somewhat of an acquired taste - I mean, you walk around for something like 30 minutes before anything happens, and even then it's quite slow-paced. I guess what I'm saying is that it certaintly isn't for everybody.

Drawf Fortress. It will take hours to get into that game. Once you do it is a thing of gaming bliss.

You play for a hour or two of just dialogue in Persona 4 before you fight anything. I say it takes some time to get the really good parts for that. But when it is good, it is excellent.
I think it's more of a "if you're okay with three-hour-long JRPG intros, then you're golden. To me, the S.Links in that game were more of an acquired taste than the intro.

My own acquired taste game: The Path. You don't really do anything but wander around in the forest as a version of Little Red Riding Hood for hours on end, until you get eaten by a wolf. But its creepy as all get out, and ridiculously artsy, so I like it.

Yeah, but you still feel chills up your spine when you're walking through those woods. It's like something is stalking you and you can't help but to be paranoid.

On topic* I'm pretty much sur that Dota is an acquired taste these days.

Hm, true, I did find myself jumping at every little ruffle I heard in the surrounding area - I suppose that whole sequence is just part of SH's amazing pacing; I just brought up the game because a lot of the gamer's I know have the attention span of a brick and will only play FPS's (that's what I get for playing CounterStrike)

That being said, I'd probably agree with you on DotA. I really like the game, personally, but the learning curve in that game is monstrous.

Paradox Strategy games, no doubt. Once you understand them, they are awesome. But to get there you have to spend at least 15-20 hours just getting to understand the interface, mechanics and workings. Since, you know, the game forgot to tell you most of the things you need to know to play it properly.

Final Fantasy VII. I think there's an article about having to get out of Midgar to truly get into FFVII, so I don't really need to explain myself.
