These are the games that where hyped as being near perfect, only to have them be...

near perfect.

judging by the sheer number of "overhyped games" threads, I thought this would be a nice change of pace.

Personally, there have only been 2 games that have ever had this effect on me: Starcraft and Warcraft 3 (and then only because of the amazing mapmaking community)

so what about you guys? any games that made you squeal with excitement and then actually make you squeal even more after you bought it?

Assassin's Creed II.

I was so excited for that then I played it and I had a total nerdgasm.

No More Heroes 2.

It completely obliterated the few problems I had with the first.

And it's still every bit as FUCKING AWESOME.

Prince of Persia Sands of Time

Then again, I was really young and my expectations were exceptionally low so I was it was a lot easier to find an amazing game.

Killzone 2, for me having not played the original (don't think anyone has) all I knew was they had an e3 trailer that got everyone raving mad and that it was a PS3 exclusive.

Fallout 3. This was the only game I played all last year and I felt pretty good about that.

Mass Effect 2 and Assassin's Creed 2.

My God did those games live up to my expectations... And then some.

KOTOR 2. I expected a decent game that tried to live off its amazing predecessor, and got a game that could stand on its own extremely well, and which would have been even better than the first had LucasArts not committed production genocide and forced the game to come out earlier than it should have, forcing a terrible ending onto the game.

Battlefield 2, loved it and put way too many hours into it.

Very excited for Bad Company two now. I've been having a blast with the beta but what was great about BF2 was that it was PC exclusive and some parts of Bad Company two have that watered down console port taste. Nothing to extreme though and its only a beta so far.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Not only is the gameplay fun and inventive and presented well (it all takes place on a literal stage), but the story is fun and full of humor that occasionally can get very dark.

gah, oblivion was fun until I began trying to bring out every bit of treasure from a cave or dungeon. Gah... so many trips!

I'd go with the Hannah Montana game. Expect a shitty game, get a shitty game.

More realistically, I might say Left 4 Dead. It's not perfect, but I was expecting an entertaining and intense coop game, and what I got was a game that's rather addicting and has caused my friends and I to ignore each other in favor of zombies, even when we're ten feet away from each other. One of us will be huddled over a computer shooting, ignoring and being ignored by the rest of their fellows. And they don't care at all. It is odd, however, that a game so focused on co zombies camaraderie disconnects us so much.

The World Ends With You, one of the few modern JRPG's that I have played, and i gotta say, it was fun and unique from the start, and it kept me hooked through the pseudo-philisophical teenage angst-ridden plot. Also, you could throw cars and trash cans (as well as like anything else that you can find on a street) via the touch screen, and that's always fun.

That has got to be the best DS game on the market.

While the single player was not as great, Multi-player in Cod Modern Warfare 1 (and then later 2) was exactly what I expected: Amazing.

Infamous

I had heard good things about but when I played it was far better than I imagined would be.
