I purchased my first Gameboy for Pokemon Red. I purchased my GBA for Pokemon Leaf Green. I purchased my DS for Pokemon Diamond. And so help me, when they put out a game that requires it, I'll probably purchase a 3DS for Pokemon Whatever.
This is what I came here to say. I've gone through all 5 Pokemon generations and have only ever got the new handheld when the newest Pokemon games are on it.

And since Black 2 and White 2 are still on the DS, I won't be getting a 3DS any time soon.

If Kingdom Hearts 3 gets released this generation, it would get me to finally buy a PS3. Other than that, I bought my first Gameboy(a Gameboy Pocket to be precise, which is somewhere in my apartment at this very moment) so I could play Pokemon Red.

Xbox 360 for Gears, which I was extremely happy with. Also bought it for Fable2, which I enjoyed, but alone wouldn't have been worth buying an Xbox for. I also picked up Halo, and it completely underwhelmed me. I'd had friends telling me to buy the xbox for Halo, but I didn't, and to this day I can't understand why Halo gets more publicity than Gears.

Assassins Creed was the game that made me actually want a next gen console.. but i couldnt afford it at that point so i had to wait about 6 months for it to be ported to PC. And it was a few months after that that i bought a PS3. So i didnt actually buy it for any game in particular because i dont think any 1 game is enough of a reason.

I can give a list of consoles ive bought for a particular game:

Megadrive: Sonic the Hedgehog 2
SNES: Street Fighter 2
Xbox: Panzer Dragoon Orta
DS: Front Mission First
PS3: Final Fantasy XIII
Wii: Xenoblade Chronicles

Looking back i dont regret any of them, though i think Xenoblade was the best choice (not least because i got a superb condition 2nd hand Wii for £35)

When the Nintendo DS was release I didn't buy one straight away due to money cost and lack of interest with the first wave of games. That change when Pokemon Diamond and Pearl were about to be release (I'm a fan of that game).
Granted I didn't buy the game and the DS on released day (I came close but my bro talk me out of it since I still having money issue).
It was sometime later that I finally did bought the DS and that game during the summer because I was at my parent house (this was during my University years) and they had 56k. I was bored out of my mind can't wait to get back to Uni for their broadband (also I had played al of my Wii games).

I am pretty much doing the same thing with Nintendo 3DS atm (no exclusive game had made go buy it yet and the next Pokemon game is still for the DS) however I do want a 3DS since the DS has an old fashion way to connect online (so awkward to connect since it use the WEP key).

I bought an Xbox in preparation for Starcraft: Ghost.
Also, a PS2 for Rock Band/Guitar Hero.

Being a PC gamer, I have upgraded for a game (that's the same thing in our world) plenty of times. (I started in 1993, with an SVGS card for SimCity 2000). The latest was a GeForce 570 for DX:HR which turned out to be unnecessary.

Sad thing is, I enjoyed Heavy Rain alot, but the system so underwhelmed me, I've only bought 3 more games for it since February 2010, all exclusives, none of which I enjoyed as much as Heavy Rain.
Change the date of the last game bought and change Heavy Rain to Metal Gear 4 and that's the reason I got my PS3. Also, playing Arkham Asylum as Joker sounded a whole lot better than it turned out to be. I still have and use my PS3 but it's being used solely as a Blu-Ray and, Netflix device.

I bought my Gamecube used for two reasons:

1: I was in a gaming slump and sick of the PS3
2: Super Smash Brothers

I love my Gamecube and am warming up to the Family Wii finally (may consider getting my own). Sadly, all of the Gamecube games I missed out on are now getting kind of expensive ($70 for Twilight Princess vs $20 for Wii-Twilight Princess?! I'd still grab the GC one eventually because of the controls)

More recently: Nintendo 3DS for Kid Icarus.

I basically bought my PSP on the strength of Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles, it was more worthwhile buying a second hand PSP and that game then it was to buy Symphony of the Night on normal Playstation, probably more reliable too. The only other thing was buying my own PS2, at the time simply because I had a copy of Skullmonkeys and didn't have my own console to play it on.

I'm not sure if it justifies the purchase, but I bought my Japanese 3DS just for Tales of the Abyss. Yes, that's right, a non exclusive. I love Tales of and that game.

You touched my favourite subject. I own the Playstation original of SotN, and the PSP version. PSP has Maria Renard as playable character, but the Playstation version has the "cult" original voice overs (Die monster! You don't belong in this world! What is a man? etc...lol) I also have the Live Arcade Xbox 360 version with the achievements. You know it's funny, the version that I enjoyed the most was on a pc Playstation emulator... because the graphics in maximum settings are just beautiful to look at.

Yeah, your Alucard avi kinda gave it away that you're a Symphony fan. Actually the first time I ever played it was when my friend lent me his PS3, on which he had Symphony of the Night downloaded. It was literally the first thing I played, not only that it was way more fun and satisfying then his copy of Modern Warfare 2, at least Symphony doesn't kill you every 30 seconds because I wasn't looking in the right direction at the right time =/

Actually I had a similar experience myself. I discovered the game very lately somewhere in 2008, after I was curious to play a game that was sold for such a high price in eBay. I played it perhaps when the first Modern Warfare was in circulation. I never felt that I was playing any retro game, on the contrray it was perfectly playable. The funny thing is that the Official Playstation Magazine gave a score of 7, criticizing the fact that it had outdated 2D environments and lacked any 3D environments. The obsession with 3D environments and 3D characters were the trend of the 90's.

I remember saving up for months just to buy a PS 2 for final fantasy 10. Bought both on the same day. Was a FF supporter for a long time but after playing the game I realized it did not justify the purchase of the expensive system for me. But I bought another game on the same day from the discount bin that did. Ico.
