Games that deserve more credit than deserved

Now as a gamer I know this happens a lot. You walk into a game store and browse around the selection, and you see a title that you haven't heard about. Some under the radar games like Nier, or (i know this is tracking back abit) Run Like Hell. You hear no big announcements about them, or even seen them make a good eye popper when browsing release dates online. So what do you do, you pick up the title, play with it a bit and go, "Hey this game was really good." It saddens me that games such those are considered under the radar and the out in the open games are like duke nukem or Shadows of the Damned, and any other ridiculous title that really makes video games look like it's meant for kids and people with the IQ of a peanut. Are there any titles you have ran into that need more credit for what's it worth?

Vanquish, high paced action, loads of fun, but i think the horrendous voice acting in the commercials killed it for most people. Anytime i mention it to people the usual response i get is "never heard of it".

Urban Chaos: Riot Response.

It was one of the best shooters from the last console generation (at least in my opinion), but it had the misfortune of being released around the same time as the Xbox 360's launch. Because of this unfortunate timing it flew under most people's radar (it didn't help that it's not part of the 360's list of backwards compatible games).

Also, Space Station: Silicon Valley for the N64. It had an awesome gameplay premise (take control of various robotic animals), and a twisted sense of humor.

Oh thought of another game. Resonance of Fate, that was a game with good game play, and design, though one of the character's got on my nerves

This game deserves more credit than it deserves!

*head explodes*

There are a lot of high quality games that fly under the radar. Bastion comes most immediately to mind, but things like Mount and Blade and STALKER have never been as popular as their quality should demand, although both have strong cult followings.

The title 'Games that deserve more credit than deserved' makes no sense, it'd be 'Games that deserve more credit than received'.

OT: There are a helluva load of games I have played like this; anything by Atlus being the first, none of my friends have even heard of the Persona series let alone any other of Atlus' marvels. AAA games are just like pop songs, dished out on a regular basis for mass consumption, covering over other titles that deserve their top spot and leave a funny taste in the mouth when experienced. It's just simply because the industry (like all others) are about competition and you must beat all others in terms of wealth, not the actual quality of the game or the message it could be giving. I sigh for the state of gaming but it's an inevitable fate, as all else is that becomes an industry.

Or even better, "Games that are underrated". Not that we don't get this topic at least 5 times a week.

OT: I find that a lot of games catch crap from fans for not meeting expectations, but they're actually solid games. Fable got slammed for not being the giant open world that Peter Molyneux was ranting about in interviews (seriously, people? Why do we trust anything that guy says?) but it was still quite a fun game in its own right.

I thought Freedom Fighters and Psi-Ops were unappreciated gems from the PS2 era.

Gothic 2. It did what Oblivion does better and already way back in 2002. It's just the fact that it's German that it didn't get that much of an extensive marketing treatment in the U.S. There is an English version though, so if you're an RPG fan you definitely cannot give this one a miss.

Alice Madness Returns, Alpha Protocol, and Castlevania Lords of Shadow.

All three of them got very average reviews, but they deserved a lot more credit than they actually got, especially Castlevania lords of shadow.

God of War clone my Arse, suck it Yahtzee.

This thread's title divided by zero.

Anyway, I'd have to go with Dawn of War. "Gamers" saw it more as a "specialist" game, made for the Warhammer 40K fan, but it was a far better straight forward strategy game than the other big hitter in the genre that year, Medieval: Total War, which sold more than twice as much. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
To be fair, Medieval 2: Total War was aiming at a different crowd. The original Dawn of War suffered from not being Homeworld, and to casual audiences, it looked like another ripoff of the Blizzard Formula. Had they actually played the game, they would have changed their minds.

That said, Relic has made quite a reputation since then. Dawn of War became a cult classic, Dark Crusade is considered fantastic, and Dawn of War 2 has sold very well, Chaos Rising being one of the top sellers on Steam last year.
