I'm gonna say Left 4 Dead. Sure, it was good fun and all, but part of the hype was the free DLC and shit that Valve was gonna release. So in a way, it didn't live up.

Any overly hyped game, really. The hype is there to ensure that people will buy the product, regardless of quality. Nothing is going to meet the criteria the fans set.

Just off the top of my head...

InFamous - Played it for a day before trading it back in. There were some game mechanics that I really don't like in other games that found their way in Sucker Punch's game (overwhelming enemies, cheap hits/kills).

Fable II - I mostly got this game because a friend of mine adores the series, but we both agree that the second game wasn't very good. Bless Molyneux's heart, but there's a point in the game where it just gets dull. The wonky multiplayer didn't help things.

Mass Effect - I remember liking it the first play through, but going through it a second time, I'm surprised how frustrated I am with the combat - especially when the game has moved me in the opposite direction of a group of enemies after the conclusion of a cutscene.

Mark of Kri - I absolutely adored this game. My problem with it is while it starts out as an action oriented adventure, by the end of the game it turned into a stealth-oriented game.

Valentine82, I'd like to know your thoughts on GTA4. I've been replaying it lately to fill the time and really enjoy it. :)
In a lot of ways I felt like GTA4 was a step backwards from GTA San Andreas, at least in terms of the many features removed. I also didn't like how I would constantly get calls from NPCS wanting to do mini-missions. Still it was a pretty good game. I wasn't really aware of the Mass Effect hype until just recently when I looked back at some the the claims that were made, you're right it should DEFINATELY be on the list.

Was Mark of Kri really over hyped? I mean, what was the hype exactly?

Deus Ex: Invisible War
Invisible War makes baby Jesus cry. So much potential, wasted. This was the game that taught me not to get excited about new releases.

"Why am I less than half way through the game and have my bio-mods maxed out to the level of God? Why do I feel no challenge against my health or ammo? Why did I spend £35 on this?" *curls up into foetal position and cries*

I would have to say the Half Life 2 games.

Don't get me wrong, they were solid shooters and had good moments aplenty butthey didn't quite live up to the 'OMFG!1! this game iz teh sexxorz!' or 'best game ever made' claims I've heard time and time again.

The narrative was often absent (half the time I had no idea why I was doing something or why I should care about the world other than the 'look at what's happeneing to these people!' tear jerker we get in a lot of games) and the 'gate' system of dialogue and game progression made numerous sections feel forced, we were forced to go at the games pace for no real reason other than to reasure the writer that everyone has heard their script on at least one occasion.

I could go on about other things that disappointed me about Half Life 2 but a) I'm not writing a review here and b) considering how Valve has a huge fanbase on this forum I would probably get my testicles torn off as a result.

Need for Speed: Pro Street and Need for Speed: Undercover. Both awful games which you just cannot make yourself play. The series went terrbile after NFS: Carbon, NFS: Most Wanted being the best in the series.

I might get Need For Speed: Shift in the future when the the price has dropped slighty because I'm not paying £45 for a game which is very likely to be bad, just as the 2 before it.

Halo 3: ODST. It is a good game and lives up to the name Halo but IMO does not live up to its hype of "zOMG best Halo 3V4R!1!" Firefight is fun and a welcome addition to Halo, but it's pretty much the firefights from the campaign without all the story and lead-up.
EDIT: and anything designed or hyped by Peter Molyneux. That's why I don't believe any of the hype about Natal. It may only be as functional as the EyeToy or the Wii remote. Maybe it'll be like both combined, but that's the most I'm capable of expecting.

Go play Gmod and then tell me what you think.

I can't say I was ever a fan of mods, if the game wasn't good at release then having some lifeless geek somewhere tinkering with it won't nessercarily improve the quality (it also doesn't help that I largely play on consoles where mods are a non-issue).

Half Life 2 people harped on and on about the epic story and atmosphere, likable characters said it was better than deus ex, system shock bollocks it cant hold a candle in any of those departments by comparisson to those two. For me it was another generic shooter that tried alittle harder but fell far, far from the interesting mark.

(Im gonna die for this but)

Fallout 3, it just didnt impress me i found myself wandering around aimlessly fighting the same damn mole rats every 50000000 metres. The combat felt clunky and so did the animation maybe its just me but i thought it could have been 1000x times better.

Age Of Conan. Vanguard. Warhammer Online.
AOC was great for the first 50 levels for me despite the ridiculous amount of bugs from a shitty early release. Vanguard was plain terrible. Warhammer Online got ridiculously boring in tier 4. MMO's all want to be as successful as wow and try to be revolutionary, and fail. I played wow for 3 and a half years and I have to say despite everyone being all "wow is ghey LOLOL" no MMO will top its good days.

Mass effect (too damn short, flawed gameplay)
Wait. Too short? I spent over 30 hours in that game (And loved it, but it had one major flaw: the side missions were repetitive and boring, and their planets' surfaces were always shaped the same). So is the reason for the game being short for you that you didn't go through the side quests?

I'm going to get shat on.

Mass Effect. Yes, a nice little game, nothing to be ashamed of. But it wasn't the divine masterpiece people said it was. The main plot is nothing special, and the "decisions" you make in it are fairly.. dumb. I've only played it through once though.

Halo. 1. the first Halo game.
I had it on the pc, and it felt like a normal shooter. Not bad, not exceptionally good. The alien guns were pretty boring, and the main character, to me, was a hollow shell. Granted, haven't played it online, but I really didn't see anything worth writing home about.

Also: Daikatana will always be the large ham here. There's no topping Romero.
