Brawl.

Melee: a lot of pro tricks and really quick.

Then Brawl was announced, more characters, stages, a lot of extras, and they royally screwed up the gameplay: slow, random events(tripping). It's pure luck if you win and you can't wavedash anymore:(

Halo 3, I just think that the game was too overhyped, there wasnt really anything that was grabbing me by the belt buckle to buy it, and even after playing it after lending it from a friend, i still dont think its that good, sorry to all the Halo fans who dont agree but thats just my view.

State of Emergency(PS2;Rockstar Games 2002-3).It wasn't really even hyped, but a few of us really were looking forward to it for some reason. And then it wasn't very interesting or fun.I don't like to use cheat codes but every so often a stinko game comes along and I'll use them just to roll through the game and watch it like a movie.State of Emergency didn't even have THAT going for it.I put in the codes and found that it didn't matter,I just didn't care.I still have the game but it just sits in a box.

Mass effect (too damn short, flawed gameplay)
Wait. Too short? I spent over 30 hours in that game (And loved it, but it had one major flaw: the side missions were repetitive and boring, and their planets' surfaces were always shaped the same). So is the reason for the game being short for you that you didn't go through the side quests?
I spent over 30 hours on mass effect, I completed nearly every side quest available, at least every one I came across. 30 Hours or so is rather short for an RPG, imo. I was left wanting for more. Even after the second time I completed the game, playing very defferently and a Shepard of the other gender, I thought "this is it? It's over already?"
In comparison to other RPGs I have played, 2x 30 hours is not all that much.
Oblivion- 300+ hours, Fallout- 200+ hours, The Witcher- 90+ hours, Gothic 2/3- 400+ hours.

Ah, okay, but compared to the other Bioware games, and most other games it's still quite long, and it still satisfied me.

OH, NO YOU DIDN'T!!!

Portal = Best original game made this decade, hands down!
OH, and,

Jonathon Coulton = Best singer/songwriter of this decade as well!
Portal wasn't the new messiah it was said to be. An above avarage puzzle game with a boring story & setting. Also very easy.

Agreed, with all the hype built around it, I finally played it and didn't find anything AMAZING. It was fun and if/when there is a sequel, I'm gonna get it, but I don't see why this game is held as the golden egg around these forums.

Definitely Resi 5. Also, i was very disappointed with Red Steel and the Wii in general, but that's been said too many times already...

...Mass Effect. I know lots and lots of people like that game. I just don't like it that much...
I agree on all counts with the above. I did like Mass Effect, overall. The main issue I had was actually with the storyline, but I won't go into details because it all boils down to personal opinion in the end.

I really didn't like Oblivion, either.

Halo 2 and 3. Multiplayer is fine and all, and even the single player isn't horrible. It's just too generic or simple (not the best words) after a while. Did people honestly camp outside a store for a whole day just to get that game?

To be honest the only thing I really disliked about Mass Effect was the constant roaming around planets looking for Mineral Nodes, that ate up way too much of the gameplay time. Aside from that I really liked Mass Effect myself. Bioware rocks, even under EA.

Disclaimer: Please note that just because a game didn't live up to it's hype doesn't necessarily make it a bad game.

I would like to compile a list of games that, quite frankly, didn't live up to their hype.

Starting off the list

Spore :)

Games mentioned thus far.

Lair
GTA 4
Halo 3
Fable 1
Fable 2
Killzone
InFamous
Prototype
Too Human
Daikatana
Mass Effect
Resistance 1&2
Resident Evil 5
Assassin's Creed
Black and White 1
Black and White 2
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 10
Final Fantasy 10-2
Spore (many many times)
Star Wars: The Force Unleased
Command and Conquer 3
Red Alert 3
Added Note: Some of these games may or may not have lived up to their actual hype, the list is courtesy of fellow Escapist gamers
HEY YOU FORGOT ABOUT HAZE

Not intending to offend anybody with these, as it's just in my opinion;

Gears of War - Poor story, dumb hypermasculine characters, repetitive gameplay and very short singleplayer. Gamespot gives it a 9.6... No way in hell. Has a colossal ammount of fanboys, most of which are probably 12 years old.

Rainbow Six: Vegas - It just wasn't a Rainbow Six game, just a GOW knock-off. Arcadey gameplay replaced any tactical shooter elements and singleplayer was just too linear. Once again, Gamespot gives a 9.1.

Resident Evil 4 - It's a game i enjoyed to a certain extent, but i didn't find it that good. I won't even critisise the story, dialogue or characters because Resident Evil just doesn't bother in any of those area's. Also, what happened to survival horror... RE4 barely had any horror moments in it. Some levels i found frustrating/annoying which made me very reluctant to replay.

Dead space - Combine RE4 and Event Horizon and you get something as bland as Dead Space. Not really horror either, just gorey and 'boo' scares. When i was bored with it's predictable linear gameplay i would play a game of my own wher ei would have to search exta hard for any moments in the game that might actually have any originality. I lost that game btw.

Call of Duty 4 - It's a competent game, but other than being set in modern war the gameplay it largely unchanged to previous installments. Linear, linear, linear, moving from one checkpoint to another where team mates will stand behind cover until you advance to a certain point. Singleplayer was pretty short too and wasn't actually that hard even on the highest difficulty.

F.E.A.R. - You've played five minutes of this game and you've pretty much played the whole thing. A simple FPS where you just kill the same enemies to ad naseum. The repetition in this game was just so painful that i only just managed to play it the whole way through. Not a good horror game either. Watching the same girl walk past then fade away get's old fast.

Half-life 2 - To a certain extent. The source engine is great and the singleplayer has it's moments. But a simple story, one-note characters and pretty repetitive gameplay that they try to mask just by throwing you into a new location every couple of minutes. It's still a good game but imo it's not 'best game ever' material or anything. Also, apart from Ravenhol it didn't retain much of the horror elements from the original. Speaking of the original, it's only a bit less linear than the original. Maybe i'll get into trouble about this because aparently your allowed to say Halo overrated (which i would add, had other's not already) but not Half-life 2. Hmmm... Anyway, i'm waiting to get flamed over this one.
