I've pretty much finished Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon and it's been one long journey.

First off, I found this game to start off with a great feel, I was loving this game at first, the humour, that feel, like you're a Ghostbuster. Everything was going good so far, the Spider Boss was a great boss battle(in my opinion).

Then it went downhill, enemies started repeating and repeating, the bosses got worse and worse, from one boss who was freakin easy, to the next boss not being a boss, but enemy spam, then a boss who's just a face you shoot at, to Boolosus which was the most boring of them.

Also, who invented Eerie Staircase? That should be on the top list of things not to do in a game.

Getting around to the final enemy, it just became an enemy spam for the level just before the boss.

I really don't like that if you die, you have to restart the entire level and recollect all the treasure you lose, reopen all the doors, it just makes the game even more tedious and boring quicker. All I'm asking for is check marks.

I went from an early love of this game to hating it out right.

This game feels like it was rushed, with how the enemies just repeat and repeat.

So, what game were you excited for only to be disapointed?

Most recently for me would be Hitman Absolution. Damn that game was disappointing as fuck.

Edit: I've got another. The new Need for Speed by Criterion was terribly disappointing. Empty boring city, worst upgrade system ever, no sense of progression, crap handling etc.

I find myself disappointed by a lot of games - even games I ended up liking. The truth it my expectations and desires are rarely met by games. For example; I really did like Skyrim. It was however, a massive let down for me. For some reason I thought I was going to see the return of the wondrous, unreal world design that drove me to explore - and ultimately fall in love - with Morrowind. Instead, the aesthetic design was, quite frankly, quite boring and the world presented was pretty generic.

It was still quite a bit of fun. I just had to get over my disappointment first.

As for games that I was excited for an entirely let down for; the most prevalent has to be Hitma-

Damn, ninja'd. Suffice to say, I'm in total agreement.

A couple come to mind for me:

- Criterion's Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit reboot was a huge letdown for me. If I wanted a Burnout game I would've bought a Burnout game, you need more than just licensed cars to make a NFS title good.

- The Witcher. Had heard loads and loads of great things about it, but it just bored me to tears.

- Bioshock. Probably a victim of hype on this one but after all the great things people had said about it I played it and... it was just a shooter. A very pretty shooter with pretentions of grandeur, granted, but still just a shooter. Got bored about a third of the way through and stopped playing.

Diablo 3 and The Old Republic... but mostly Diablo 3 since I didn't have high expectations with TOR to begin with.

Seriously all the basic framework for an awesome game is there in D3 and visually it looks stunning. Even the gameplay is sharp and I don't mind at all how they decided to do abilities, it's pretty neat and refreshing as opposed to the usual talent tree. But everything else about the game just ranged from mediocre to bad. The story for example was absolute shit, even the cinematics I didn't really find fun. And this is coming from a guy who likes and defends Starcraft 2's corny story! I like cheese, I like corny B grade flicks, but Diablo 3 wasn't even that it was just bad. Really bad. Not even the fun kind of bad in terms of story.

The soundtrack was meh. The way loot drops worked was stupid. The difficulty was either too easy or too hard and forcing the player to play on normal difficulty, which is so easy that I could have napped through half of it and still won, for each character class if they wanted to try something new was moronic. And it just completely lacked that cool atmosphere from Diablo 1 and 2.

Disappointment all around. And I was so excited too after that first gameplay video when they announced it.

Since I received a warning for a low content post, I guess I'll elucidate: I preordered Metroid Other M and was excited for a new Metroid game after the finishing of the Prime trilogy. Sadly, Other M is one of the worst games I have ever played, and it is bad in many ways that make it not feel like a Metroid game. There is a ton of boring, time-wasting monologue in the script, something not seen in any Metroid game besides Fusion. There are numerous quick-time events and distracting gameplay changes that destroy the naturalism the series previously had. The actual storyline ruins any chance of the Samus character being developed in a meaningful fashion with its dreadful interpretation of her; from now on, we're either stuck with that, or we're stuck with a voiceless cipher. Even the graphics and art design are very disappointing after the gorgeous, highly detailed environments of Metroid Prime 3.

All this would have been bad enough, but the game also split the Metroid fandom. There was a large subset that hated the game, but there was a large subset that tolerated its glaring problems and, when the game was insulted, they lashed out and started flame wars where people insulted each other instead of just talking about the game. Then it also didn't sell well, which doesn't spell good things for the Metroid series in the future. Then there was that game-breaking glitch that Nintendo wouldn't patch and you had to send in the disc to fix it.

It's just the game that upsets me most.

Double Dragon Neon.
The demo looked and seemed all fun, though even then I felt the stiffness and clunkyness of the controls, but I decided to go ahead and buy it anyway.

Eugh.

Those controls pretty much keep me from playing the game.

There was stuff to like, like the production values, the music, the mythology and the world itself, but the main cast was pretty weak (with he exception of Sazh, who is one of the best characters in the series for me) the story makes little sense (why doesn't the Fal'Cie just not tell the L'cie what they want done, giving them a blurry vision of nothing isn't going to help) The combat was cool at first, but it alienates the player by having auto attack choose the absolute best action for the situation.
Yeeeeaaaaaaaap.

They took Final Fantasy VII-X, mixed them all together, and still somehow managed to screw it all up. That's some pretty epic levels of fuck-upery right there.

I suppose Sonic '06 could sort of count too, since I didn't know about its reputation when I played it. I bought it because, hey, Sonic! And just... blech. Couldn't finish it. I got through Sonic's story and tried the other two, but I just couldn't do it.

Zelda: Skyward Sword.

I enjoy it, yeah. I hated it at first due to having a shitty Wii-Motion Plus (third party one mind) so it didn't really perform well. Now it performs...slightly better. There aren't enough 3D Zeldas. When they ARE 3D, they're that cartoony cat eyed Zeldas that I have grown to hate very very much due to over exposure on the Nintendo DS. One of the main reasons why I am upset that Wind Waker is the next 3D Zelda to be made.

(I hate top down scroller Zeldas. I prefer 3D like OoT, MM, TP, WW etc...) Anyway back on topic, Skyward Sword disappointed me. We finally got away from Wind Wakers cartoony characters and back to Adult Link with a unique art style that was still cartoony but I could still enjoy it since no one was a freaking chibi. But the controls, and the over reliance on them. It makes me very very sad. I enjoy OoTs swordplay very much. I like pressing B to kick ass, and A to dodge in a direction like a pro. Those are GREAT controls. Motion controls like Skyward Swords screws me up. It says "Dont slash where theyre guarding" so I slash right, but my dude slashes Left and hits the guard and they kill me.

Motion controls aren't/weren't at the point where I can use them and die when it's my fault, and not the games. But this game kills me and it is the games fault, not mine. Slash slow in the direction, slash fast. No different he'll screw it up. I LIKE this game though. I originally hated it for reasons previously stated. But having played it now and gotten into it, despite the control its such a fun game. I love it. But the controls help to ruin the experience for me personally.

Which is a shame since it has the most unique and interesting items of any Zelda game I've played. But at least I have Ocarina of Time 3DS for fun sword play and control. I love the hell out of that remaster, you guys have no idea.

tl;dr: Skyward Swords focus on motion controls made the game a humongous disappointment after waiting so long for a Third-Person Zelda game that fit my tastes.

Halo 4 - Seriously that giant piece of exposition in the middle of the game uuugh! it's sooo bad >.<

Mortal Kombat Armageddon - Wow what a drop in quality for an MK game. They hyped and marketed this up to be the ultimate MK. all story threads were said to resolved in order to wipe the slate clean for the next gen MK's. Instead there is absolutely no closure at all because there is no story at all (yes bight me I play MK for the story!). Lazy character implementation, a terrible fatality system, a step down in graphics, a lousy soundtrack, over all the game is just reeks of laziness.

Tenchu Z ? I could seriously go on and on as to why this game was such a huge let down but then I wouldn?t want to bore anyone who might read this so I?ll just keep it simple. The stealth system is actually a big step up for Tenchu. Too bad it has no AI to actually challenge it. The game is a total cake walk because the AI is just so...well bad. Something you would think they would have tried to improve in the year 2007 with Splinter Cell setting the standard for stealth games.

See that?s what happens when I talk about this game okay I?ll shorten it up.
4 levels which are constantly recycled throughout the game (so lazy!)

Aesthetically horrendous. Hell I haven?t seen a game get away with the mouths not moving in a cutscene since 1998!

The plot is so far removed from what you would expect in a Tenchu game that well it hardly even feels like the game should be called Tenchu. I want demons and Marilyn Manson in my Tenchu games not...just corrupt government officials and greedy merchants.

Oh and remember how I was complaining about the recycling of the levels? Yeah they do that with the enemies too and play them off as completely different people. They just pull an MK on these people and recolor their clothes and BAM! New character.

MK vs CD - Great so MK Armageddon was completely pointless. Welp F*ck you very much!

Yup, agreed completely. The game's a fucking shambles.
I couldn't even finish XIII, and it was mind-numbing that I didn't even bother looking up what happens.

OT: Most recently, Ni No Kuni.
Now please note, that I didn't dislike it entirely. The combat worked for the most part, it was aesthetically very pleasing, and I rate the soundtrack as one of the best in recent memory.
But the story, oh the story.
To clarify, it wasn't the story itself that was bad (I actually quite liked it) but the way the story was told. The game treated you like a damned toddler, having characters repeat the latest plot occurrence ad nauseum. It's worse than the constant 'Metal Gear?!' line from the MGS series. The worst part is that one sidequest, which gives some interesting back story to the world and its peoples, is really well done, having the player figure stuff out and keeping a level of intrigue throughout the world-spanning endeavour.
It's such a shame, because I liked exploring the world, collecting familiars, evolving metamorphosing them, customizing their move set for different occasions, doing nothing for about half an hour to listen to the gobsmackingly beautiful map themes
Joe Hisaishi is just brilliant.
and just enjoying the lore via the Wizard's Companion, which is easily the best thing in the game which pertains to actual gameplay.

Other notable contenders are the aforementioned FFXIII, Shadows of the Damned and Brutal Legend.

Gears of war 3 disappointed me due to it being a hell of a lot easier than the last two. Borderlands disappointed me because after you start playing co-op and then decide to play the rest single player (Due to an unreliable co-op partner) I had the sudden realisation that the game was incredably boring.

Battlefield 3. I was super excited because they were going to have a single player campaign that looked awesome. Very wrong on that one (no, I don't care about multiplayer).

Medal of Honor: Warfighter. I liked the first Medal of Honor reboot. I thought it had potential. I was excited to see that they were going to continue it. Not so much now. On a side note: DIE DOOR!

Gears of War 3: So much potential, so much set up, so many mysteries JUST out of reach, both from the games and the books. And then the end of the game came and...nothing. All that set up, out the window. When the game itself is asking the same questions you're asking ("Why does the Locust Queen look like that?" I don't know, Baird, but that's a very good question) five minutes before the end, that's a good way to kill any hopes I had for resolution.

Every. Single. Killzone. Game. Ever. Every time I fall for it. A trailer for the game comes out. Trailer is massive is scope, with huge battles and enemies and allies everywhere. You are a random soldier fighting for you life alongside fellow soldiers in a battlefield that is nothing but one big death trap. The only thing saving you from taking a sniper bullet through the head is the guy standing next to you because the sniper chooses to shoot him first. These battles look epic and amazing!
And then the game comes out and suddenly I spend most the game by myself, behind enemy lines, doing things that only I can do while the rest of the unit 'regroups up ahead.' Well not this time, Killzone 4. Not this time. It took three games, but I've learned my lesson.

No Dragon Age 2 yet? Really?! Or was that simply such a disappointment that we repressed it?

Every Fable game deserves a mention as well.

Assassin's Creed 3.

You had the world there, you had two great and two average-but-sometimes-good games to take notes from and...and you:

- Needlessly streamlined the movement system and actually render it more unwieldy than the system you apparently tried to 'fix'
- "Failure? Gamers don't want that...". I know desynchronisation was a thing, but for god's sake let me answer for my gameplay mistakes!
- There's no need to shoehorn a joke into every codex entry; petty, I know, but you overseasoned that one.
- Removed any need for exploring the expansive, colourful world you built by marking EVERYTHING on the map right at the start of the game.
- Kept the killstreaks in. Seriously, ruined the AC series for me.
- LET ME PLAY WITH THE HUD OFF, GOD DAMNIT.

Repeat ad nauseam.

I don't actually feel any ill will towards it, and I've heard many people that enjoyed it; hell I enjoyed it for a while, but...brrr. I tend to like most things that I play cuz I like to think I don't have any preconceived notions of how a game should be, but apparently turns out that I do!

BioShock Infinite. I've said everything negative I can possibly say about this game in other threads. Basically it can be summed up with this: It tried too hard to appeal to too many people by trying too hard to do too many things all at once. There were other things: Elizabeth's character was odd and sort of bland compared to what I was expecting, Colombia never came alive like Rapture did, and I actually thought the combat was the worst in the series. There was a lot to love, but it definitely fell short of my expectations.

Skyrim. Huge fan of the Elder Scrolls and pretty much every major Bethesda release. That was until Skryim, a game which should require at least 100 hours of your time but never got beyond 20 of mine before becoming a pure snooze fest.

Modern Warfare 2. Like a lot of people, I loved CoD4. However, MW2 was so broken and unbalanced that it became a nightmare to play. Problem is, ever since this game, CoD has basically been trying to fix what it messed up and has only gotten worse and worse over time. It's a real shame, as Call of Duty was one of my favorite franchises up until this game.

Battlefield 3. Like with CoD4/MW2, I was a huge fan of BF2 and expected this game to be the true sequel to BF2 that we had waited about 6 years for. It turned out to be little more than Bad Company with a few features from BF2/BF2142 brought back with shiny new graphics that complemented a many times bland aesthetic style...And this is Battlefield I'm talking about, a game that has always had rather bland aesthetics, even for the genre.

Assassin's Creed 2. I wasn't that huge of a fan of Assassin's Creed, but I loved the feeling you got of being an assassin. However, I kept hearing over and over and over again that AC2 was "so much better than the first game!" that I decided to give in and try it. Not only did it remove the thing I loved most of the first game--the feeling of being an actual assassin--but it failed to really improve many of the problems I had with the first. Well, it did improve some things, but not enough. And that final boss and ending...oh, the inhumanity!

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. Well, the platforming was great, but the combat was the worst in the story arc, even worse than The Sands of Time. It had no story worth mentioning, The Prince's character was about as bland as bland can get with Razia being no better, and it lost so much of the charm The Sands of Time had. Heck, even Warrior Within was a gem compared to this game.

The Last Story...Oh God! I'm just stopping here. The memories of this game, they're too horrible to recount!

Needless to say, I've been disappointed by a lot of games over the last few years. The good news is there have been plenty of games that go above my expectations, like Xenoblade Chronicles, Mass Effect 2&3, Dragon Age: Origins, and The Witcher.
