I'm pretty slow to jump for a new game... Heck, after I got out of WoW (still feel the odd twinge to want to play, but it's subsided a LOT over the last year or so) I spent a few months playing old "classics" that I'd never touched because the lack of "free time".
But, last November brought a new PS3 and a tv to make it worthwhile. Immediate purchases ALL fit the "holy mother, that was worth it" catagory: Uncharted 1 & 2, MGS4, Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed 2 (played the first on PC and enjoyed it up until the last missions)... All proverbial works of gaming art.
Then came the one game MOST recommended by the friends who got me to try out Modern Warfare and World at War (which I enjoyed the heck out of for the writing and gameplay), BioShock.
I seriously can't figure out what the unbelievable, mind-blowingly awesome appeal is for this game. The environments are "okay", the color palette is almost glaring, the "RPG elements" have no more depth than any other 'AAA' FPS I've seen, and the moral choices appear to come in the usual black/white variety... save or kill the poor children. Sure, there are a lot of character development/upgrade decisions to make, but after years of playing RPGs, it doesn't strike me as all that groundbreaking. In the end it still ends up being rock/paper/scissors regarding your opponents. Maybe it's just that playing it for the first time so late has tarnished the luster that would have shone through years ago? Either way, I'm going to keep on keepin' on and finish it before turning it in at the local Play'n'Trade for credit towards my next purchase... just not worth it to me, yet, to keep it in my collection.
