I'm not sure it counts anymore since it's been a while, but Destiny is the only game I can think of. Most of my friends got it when it was first out, but I didn't like the look of it, and I heard that the story was not there. But, when I got my PS4 a bit later, it came with a free copy, so I finally fired it up. Play with friends and I was just...bored. "Why do you guys play this? It's the same thing, over and over, grinding for loot." It didn't help that after a certain point, leveling up became luck based instead of skill.

I've heard the game has been improved since then, but the damage is done.

I feel like I'm always a generation behind with games as it is (I currently own next-gen systems as well, but I am a bit of a completionist, so I take my time with my collection) so I'm always passing up and disregarding a lot of newer titles, but these are the main ones I found the most displeasing while others did not.

Souls games - I'm not a fan of the atmosphere, or the "style" rather. I enjoy hard games, but the fact that it seems to be made to be "hard" is a bit of a turn off for me. It's almost like it's craving attention just for the difficulty alone, and from what I read, it doesn't seem to be all that it's cracked up to be in that sense.

Destiny - Never played, but all of my friends did. I really enjoyed the Borderlands games, so I felt like this was kind of a clone of those (I know there are many differences in play style, but that is something I can't really shake). Also, I really hate multiplayer-only based games.

Gears of War series - I enjoyed the first game for a spell while playing through the Campaign with my brother, but that was about it. Kind of a one trip pony most definitely. I never played much of the 2nd or 3rd as I felt like they were carbon copies to another. There's another one that I will without a doubt pass up, too.

Any/all Elder Scrolls games - I really don't favor Westernized RPG's I guess, but I don't dismiss the games on that alone. I don't think the leveling system has ever been motivating as far as progression is concerned. The fact that 90% of people I have seen play the games hardly progress in the story line, due to all the sidequesting and shenanigans. Nothing wrong with that I guess, if you like to wonder aimlessly for hundreds of hours doing "silly" things. The glitches too, oh my.

Overwatch - Didn't even bat an eye when this came out. Again, I don't like multiplayer-based games, and I rarely play shooters, so this was very easily skippable for me. It looks nice and the lore seems neat though.

Witcher series - The main protagonist seems uninteresting, although I do respect the vastness of the open world. I adored MGSV: TPP (one of my favorites of the year, if not my favorite) and it seems like the line gets split with fans there. A lot of folks who disliked one, tend to like the other. Maybe that's why. I think it all goes back to me not liking the Westernization of the game.

Zelda games - I'm really not sure what all the hooplah is about these either. I don't have nostalgia to carry me through any of these, so I guess that's why. I plan on trying to get through a couple of the acclaimed ones this year (OoT, MM, TP) in order to gauge them properly. Until then, I consider them to be just another RPG with plenty of positives/negatives to acknowledge.

GTA. most boring piece of shit out there.

even Uncharted, which is also total crap, is more entertaining than GTA. and anyone who knows me back from the Gametrailers.com forums knows i hate Uncharted.
I really can't stand GTA (especially V) more than any other game on my list. I hate the premise, the plot, just really everything there is about being rewarded for killing innocents for no real reason other than a good laugh. I'm not an extreme pacifist or anything, I just find no sense in wrecking havoc on people who have no bearing in your actual mission (for those who are even bothered to play the actual missions).

I have a friend who plays regularly, so I watch quite a lot of gameplay for a game that I hate. The DLC race stuff, the heists stuff, all of that seems like a neat idea on paper, but then I watch it in application and there is always (and I mean always) somebody out there who's only goal is to ruin it for everyone.

The general mechanics of the game are honestly atrocious as well. The ballistics are crap, the auto-assist aim ensures you will never miss (what's the point of even aiming then?), and the fact that you can't crouch conventionally (cover based system is complete crap) is a huge deal breaker for me in a game where combat seems inevitable.

For how large the game is, I feel like it jams too many things into it, but never hits the mark on any of them (driving, shooting, etc.). It just feels like a collection of other mediocre games all packaged into one.

Clearly, I hate GTA...

I've seen this kind of thread before, so I won't go into details. But basically this is a list of games that I've played that, IMO, aren't necessarily bad, but ones I'm not as enamored with as a lot of other people:

-Diablo II

-Doom 2

-Doom 2016

-Fable

-Fallout 3

-Half-Life 2

-The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

-Path of Exile

-World of Warcraft

Mass Effect but only because I couldn't get into it and I was stuck (I kept dying on a planet and the autosave only take me to the start of it but I want to leave the planet to level up more).

Borderlands games - just couldn't get into them, just annoying.

Witcher 3. Slow going, but planning to give it another shot at some point; I gave up fairly early and forgot to go back.

I love everything about Undertale except for the game part of Undertale. I never tried playing a homicidal run but playing passively seemed interesting in theory but the actual...thing. I dunno, I kinda like schmups in general but for the most part, those games are made to be lightning quick whereas the schmup-style...thing that's going on in Undertales just feels really sluggish and annoying more than engaging. I tried playing this game three times but I just can't convince myself to get back into it, especially now that I know how the story is meant to go.

I understand that people are entitled to their own opinion and that I have no right to tell people when their own, subjective opinion is wrong but it kinda surprises me how well-received Final Fantasies XII and XIII happened to be. Final Fantasy XIII-2 left a much better first-impression on me but FFXII bored me to tears with its limp MMO-style combat system and FFXIII-1 annoyed me with its awful characters, boring combat and restrictive character development.

Also, Platinum games. Generally praised as the be-all and end-all of the action genre, but to me the weightless hack 'n slashing and empty, lifeless levels are always a thorn in my eye. I can understand that the combat is extremely fine tuned, and that people who have a boner for combos and cancels or whatever have a field day with it. But I'm the kind of guy who appreciates setting, characters, story, and atmosphere just as much if not more so than the intricacies of the gameplay mechanics. I played the Nier: Automata demo last week and yeah... I guess it plays very well, but beyond that the game feels bland and lacking any sort of punch or weight.
Oh man, I hear you on the weightless combat.

So many games that are fundamentally about hitting things completely fail to make me feel like I'm fucking hitting something.

Undertale. I bought it on a recommendation before I was exposed to the massive hype and if it wasn't for the fact that I kept hearing about it afterwards the whole experience would just be a strange vague memory. I didn't hate it, but I certainly didn't get it.

I just went through and played the way the game told me to play which it then tried to pretend was a big revelation or something? Then it just kept not ending which got old really fast.

I think the problem was that I just didn't particularly care for any of the characters and then lost any interest in the plot around the point it didn't end the first time.

GTA for me as well. I don't really like open world games at the best of times, but GTA just leaves me totally cold. Oddly enough, Red Dead Redemption is one of my favourite games, so I think it's the setting and characters in GTA that puts me off.

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls - I mean Diablo 3 in general, but people seem to really like it post Reaper of Souls. It did improve the game, but my biggest issues with the game were still there and always will be.

Far Cry 3 - This was the game that made me sick of open world games. So much pointless drivel scattered about the map for no other reason than to be "content". There just didn't seem to be any context for most of the side activities at all, which is the case with most open world games and I'm beyond sick of it. It feels like I'm playing a checklist instead of a game.

Rim World - This one is a complete damn mystery to me. I really enjoy that style of game, hell I love Dwarf Fortress, but Rim World just hasn't clicked with me. Granted the game isn't finished yet, and I'll give it another shot sometime in the future.

Skyrim - Honestly it just seems that a lot was cut from the game. So many of the questlines felt rushed or unfinished or just lackluster. The College in particular was awful. You go from "person we let in because you can cast a simple spell" to "person who can cast a simple spell but now you're head mage" in no time at all. I have other problems with the game, but the lack of thought or seemingly missing content from some of the major questlines really sticks out to me.

Dark Souls - I just feally dislike the aesthetic. I dunno, I'm just over grimdark medievil. The gameplay didn't grab me either. I love Bloodborne though.

Sandbox games - I think I got over sandboxes after the PS2 GTA games and , they pretty much presented everything to me and I exhausted them. I like structure to my games now, which leads me to my next entry.

Sandbox Survival - I have no idea what the appeal is or why there are so many.

Fallout 4. And you know what? Fallout 3 as well. I've just about had enough of Bethesda's early alpha products. I think the only reason I played Skyrim was because I knew that mods would turn it into a good game. But I haven't played Skyrim since 2013. Mods must be why I thought that Fallout 4 could be a good game as well. But it's not. It's a piece of shit with almost no redeeming qualities.

I hate survival games. They feel like a chore.

I have never played a second of any of the Final Fantasy games. They look like a bad joke and I don't see anything appealing about them.

Add me to the list of people who don't think GTA is all it's cracked up to be. I really enjoyed Vice City back in what, 2003? But San Andreas is overrated and I never finished 4, and never touched 5. I don't hate GTA, but I don't think it deserves the love it gets.
The problem with undertale is the fanbase has hyped the game up to absurd levels. The expectations for new players are just too high and it's a real shame.

Real-Time-Strategies. Any of them. ALL of them. I?ve tried maybe three in my time (because sometimes the voices in my head tell me to hate myself) and didn?t enjoy a second of any of them. I actually played Halo Wars through to the end, but only because I?m a shameless, old school Halo fanboy, and wanted to play every Halo game there was, but I absolutely hated it. All the micromanaging of individual units and groups of individual units and resource farming and having to keep tabs on multiple areas off-screen all while your best laid plans fall apart right before your eyes because of ONE oversight, it?s just? ugh. It?s not fun; it?s WORK; it?s stressful. It?d be more fun putting my balls in a bear trap connected to an egg timer and giving myself 3 minutes to learn fluent Japanese while juggling live hand grenades.

God Hand - While I can appreciate that the combat was interesting I never really got that invested in it; on top of that I hated the characters and writing and the humour definitely didn't strike the right chord with me.

Limbo - I picked this up because of the buzz around it but I just didn't get into it. The first third is exceptional but once you're out of the forest I feel like the game lost all of its atmosphere and the puzzles became more and more tedious.

Odin Sphere, Zone of the Enders and Rogue Galaxy - grouping these together because all three seem to get a fair load of praise and cult followings (not to mention the odd HD redo of some of them) but I never found myself quite all there with them. Odin Sphere I found repetitive and a little overbearing in its writing and both Zone of the Enders were just clunky and awkward (despite the 2nd game having an excellent demo). Rogue Galaxy again seems to get a lot of love in JRPG circles but I didn't see it myself - while elements of it are pretty good (the combat, some of the designs, the aesthetic) a lot of the writing is totally flat, none of the dungeons are interesting (the less said about the two tower dungeons the better) and some of the turns the plot takes are predictable to the point of tedium.

GTA is indeed most overrated franchise of all time. Also Witcher 3. just average game.
Those are pretty big statements to make without any kind of argument to stand with them.

I mean, taking GTA alone into account its a series that on multiple occasions has pushed the boundaries of what we know possible for a game on a technical level and I would also argue from a story telling standpoint as well.

Its fine to say you don't like those games but the term "Overrated" seems ridiculous here. Those games are much loved for a reason, because they are top quality experiences. Like everything in life they will have some detractors but going by the fact that almost every gamer I know adores the GTA series and have put several hundred hours into the Witcher 3 (Myself included) I would say they are rated just about right.

With regards to the original post: This year, definitely without question DOOM. Its a good game there is no doubt there but I cant help but disagree with the level of praise its getting. Its a fun game start to finish but I don't feel I would come back to it a second time. For the most part its very much an arena shooter which is very linear and ultimately lacks any kind of intriguing narrative or characters. Which is fine for a DOOM game, absolutely. Its a damn fine DOOM game in fact, surprisingly so considering the games development cycle. But its no more than that to me, certainly not "Game of the year!!". And again looking at the package as a whole, that multiplayer is pretty damn poor.

Mass Effect

I've played the first two to completion and the third one halfway, I just don't get it. I think it's very well written, I think the relationships are well thought-out, I think the gameplay is good, not great, personally, but good, I still don't get it.
I don't know what it is, I just lack whatever gene or fundamental understanding I need to to truly enjoy this game on the level that everybody else seems to.

Dishonored

Same problem. I played the first one to completion, didn't love it. Picked up Dishonored 2 and I'm trying to play it "correctly", I'm using all my powers and weapons as often and appropriately as I can and it's a bit better but I'm not loving it still. Maybe it's because I'm terrible at stealth and I'm going for Low-Chaos right now but whatever, it's not rezzing right now.

Final Fantasy 6.

Sorry but looking back at it the writing was terrible and the villain's entire motivation seems to be 'lol i'm crazy'.
