Ever find yourself playing a game and really enjoying it, but still having the nagging sense that if one or two things was done better it could have been spectacular?

Thanks to some recent bargain hunting, I'm currently playing a probably forgotten title by the name of Dark Sector. It was originally a title used to promote the PS3/360 era of gaming and blew many people away when first revealed, and then it sort of fell into development hell where it received a fairly drastic visual make over before being silently released into the wild. As I've been playing through it, I can't help but find myself thinking how nearly amazing it is.

Dark Sector has some jaw dropping environmental designs and lighting, accompanied by excellent sound design and music (which is sometimes only music in the Silent Hill sense). Gameplay is solid but unspectacular 3rd person yet it contains the brilliant glaive. The glaive is, in essence, a giant shuriken that functions as a boomerang. NESers can think of the windmill throwing star in Ninja Gaiden.. or, if you've ever seen the terrible movie Krull you know exactly what it is. Not only did the developers mix the glaive into the standard gunplay extremely well, but they also worked it into some fairly clever puzzle sequences involving charging the glaive with an element and psychically controlling it's movement mid flight. You also have a nice mix of combat between infected zombie like enemies and non infected intelligent soldiers.

Unfortunately, as said above, the 3rd person play doesn't really stand out and the cover system just doesn't feel as good as, say, Gears of War. Also, while the environments look stunning, the character models for both PC and NPC look just short of horrid. I'm not sure if even more development time would have helped in this case, but it's definitely a title for me that comes so close to spectacular but just falls short.

Mass Effect has always been on of my favorites, and a very well put-together game. It tells a very interesting storyline with Commander Shepard and his motley crew of allies and enemies. The interesting part about this game is how you handle certain and/or conversations, these play a role in how you and your characters develop and can change events, etc. A solid game, but combat is, ehh... The combat seems very slow or too vague, which is a problem when playing on higher difficulty settings. The whole third person isn't really that great in this game either, but I guess that's my opinion.

I'd have to agree on the Mass Effect feelings, i liked the game but it was just a bit off...

Another game that did this was, for me at least, Far Cry 2. It was SOOO huge and interesting but the difficulty curve aka getting smeared by an SUV every other encounter, and the combat seeming clunky (yes i know it was an older game) did it in for me.

Last one i'd have to say would be Red Dead Redemption, few games got me as involved in my character as this one (plus any game that makes you knife fight a bear for one of its challenges is a good game for me) the ending actually choked me up a bit, but the mission to mission storyline and less than amazing supporting cast made this one a miss for me that could have hit GTA4 greatness for rockstar.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Let's get this out of the way: it's a damn good game and easily my favourite title of both its series and genre. It was a good mix of serious and goofy and it's a boatload of fun. I fully recommend this game to anyone mature enough to play it.

With that out of the way, I have one (1) issue with the game. The jetpack. It was just a little too stupid, even for this game. The novelty of using the damn thing wore off fast and every mission that required it felt like a chore. Maybe I'm still miffed because they lifted the idea and control scheme from Pilotwings, one of my favourite SNES games, but I dislike it nonetheless. I would have enjoyed San Andreas just a little more without it.

I actually really liked this game, which is odd because I hate the genre. I have no idea why it was as hated as it was nor why it was quickly forgotten. I had a blast playing that game!

Also Borderlands, seriously this game was SOOOOOO close, just a few more mechanics in boss fights or larger battles or just less plodding around under populated areas(i mean seriously it felt like i spent the whole game fighting 5 guys that just jumped out from under their tent flaps) at this game would have been sick. Its still a good game in my book for side by side play but DAMN it was so close!

I really liked Dark Sector to. Sure it was a little generic but still a lot of fun, and I got it for $5 to boot!

Another one for me is The Darkness. I had a lot of fun with the game and replayed it a couple of times but I can't help but think that if they varied up the gameplay a little and tightened up the controls it could have been spectacular.

Assassins Creed 2 and Brotherhood
Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE these games, but 2 things make it less than "God's-gift-to-the-world".

First is the climbing thing. Now, it's really cool when you can take your time and choose exactly where you want to go and how to get there, but when you're on the clock, like when you have to chase someone, Ezio just seems to want to climb EVERYTHING! It's like Ezio just hates me and wants me to fail. "Go this way, he's over there! NO! The OTHER wall you god-damned APE!!! Why would I want to climb a HORSE when he's right in front of you!!!"

The second thing is Ezio's outfit. I mean, it looks cool and all, but how the hell does a guard not notice THAT!? Not only does Ezio's outfit display a variety of weapons and armor pieces, but it's white. WHITE! The most easily noticible color in the world!

Sorry, but I love these games, and it irks me when something so close to perfect falls short because of easily noticable issues...

Well for Mass Effect 2, it would have been a bit better if there was more Main Story stuff. I mean, all those recruitement missions and loyalty missions are pretty much the story, but would have liked to see more to it. And while the side missions looked a lot better in ME2, I felt the ones in ME1 were better done.

Another game that was almost perfect was The World Ends With You. I mean, its a really, really, really awesome game, but I don't think the whole "Wear a certain brand to influence that brand of pin's power" worked out that well. Also felt that some requirements given to you by the Reapers in order to pass were annoying, but it wasn't that major.

Both super awesome games! Yet could have been a bit better. But thats what sequels are for right?

That's actually another one for me too I was a Vice City nut and I loved everything that SA did to expand upon the foundation laid for GTA3 and VC. More territory, more unique vehicles, more characters and storyline, more character customization, everything.. except I just could not get into the 90s California gansta setting of everything. Give me a new VC with all of the great stuff that SA added and I'd be in heaven.

Mirror's Edge perhaps?

The core run-jump-climb gameplay worked pretty well and smoothly navigating a series of obstacles was always fun and satisfying. Furthermore, the chase sequences were great. Running for dear life and desperately seeking an exit while heavily armed "blues" burst into the room and bullets whistled past your head could be heart-stoppingly intense.

Sadly, they went and cocked it up by adding pathetic combat that allowed you to take out any enemy by just running up to him and pressing the counter button. Then they went and screwed the level design by making you crawl through a vent or climb a drain every two minutes.

Oh yeah, and the storyline and characterization were garbage.

I feel the same way about Dark Sector. The game was fun as hell... until you get to the black market.

If they kept the "guns stop working after a bit" mechanic in there, then it would have been awesome. Would have added a layer of tension to the gunplay.

Also the story was abysmal to say the least. It seemed like there was half a game that should have been there to flesh out characters and interactions.

There are a lot of games that have parkour elements which I really wish would be improved, and this is one of them. InFamous was another one. Though there were MANY things that would have made that better, not just a couple of touches. I agree with AC2 being an awesome game, though.

Saints Row 2 is a game where I can't put my finger on what it would take, but it's missing something, a certain je ne sais quoi, to keep it from being like ZOMG BEST SANDBOX EVAR!

Bioshock had an excellent atmosphere. It could've been perfect if only the gameplay part hadn't been so horribly broken.

Final Fantasy XII

I just wished the story was more "engaging?". Like the story was good but, it felt as though the pacing was a bit slow and I had to work really hard to get to the next part of it unlike other Final Fantasy games. I still enjoyed it a lot and overall it's much less disappointing than Final Fantasy XIII. Which had a more "engaging" story however, it suffered from character's I didn't care about, nothing to do in the world, and the decision made by the characters at the ending actually didn't make any logical sense. Like what they chose to do wasn't actually explained so that the decision was the right one. They spent all that time, trying not to do a certain thing but, all of sudden decide to do it? It didn't give any reason why they changed their mind.

If anyone would like to tell me why they chose to do what they did in the end made sense. That would be greatly appreciated as I would like to think the game wasn't as bad.

I love those games as well, and I have the exact same issues. Now remember, you can dye your outfit. My complaint is that presumably every guard in the city would know who you are and attack you on sight simply because of how distinctive your outfit is no matter what colour it is.

Red Faction Guerilla. Make a game about blowing buildings up, and then setting it in a wasteland? Good job.

Anything by Valve. Games like Portal and Half Life 2 are not completely perfect. In fact, no game ever gets it "completely right".
