My room mates and I were talking yesterday. What are some games that actually hate you playing them, games that so actively try to make you not want to play them, games that just don't like who you are. We came up with a few, but not nearly enough... oh and Superman 64 was DQed because that is far beyond hate, its some manner of electronic genocide.

Ninja Gaiden
Toe Jam & Earl
Sea Man
Virtual Tennis
Castlevania
Mega Man
Katamari Damacy, It tries to make you happy, it hates who you are and tries to change you.

Mario Kart for the wii. So many times I will be in first place at the last lap and then..Boom! Blue shell hits me. seconds later, several more shells hit me and i can only watch while all of the other racers past me. I reach the finish line and place last. God that game had the the worst rubberbanding AI. The worst part is that my friend can place first easily and he has a crippled hand! That game really hates me.

If F.E.A.R and Doom 3 don't count, nothing does. Not for being scary, though. The first makes a point of long breaks between checkpoints, unrewarding achievements, dropping you down in the middle of enemies to nibble at the goolies, and general misanthropy for taunting with the prospect of pickup only to go "by the way, we killed your backups again". The second is one which drops enemies in response to almost every item pickup, steals the lights, breaks down pathways, and generally acts like a jerk.

Minesweeper rules, and I'll not hear otherwise. :p
Honestly, the number rules are nice and simple even if it does occasionally require a leap of faith.

Have to disagree with you about Katamari, except for the PSP version, that hated me. Why didn't they put it on the DS?

To add to that list I would have to suggest No More Heroes.
That game didn't even have the decency to finish developing before I bought it.

Metal Gear Solid 4, it does not want you to play, it wants you to watch.

Dawn of War II

Every time I want to progress the storyline I feel compelled to defend my assets from anything and everything for 3 and a half hours

I have to throw this out for sheer fun . . . Serious Sam. That game REALLY punished you for item pickups.

If you haven't touched the game, imagine you just walked into a fairly large room. There's one of those +100 health over your max items sitting in the middle of it. You think it's Christmas time for you and run over to pick it up. As soon as you touch it, a horde of enemies spawn a bit of a distance away from you and charge you, forcing a massive firefight. After you survive, you're left with less health than you had before you picked up the item. Every "awesome" item pickup thereafter is subsequently tainted and viewed suspiciously . . . and this is probably one of the best FPS games ever made for the sheer amount of fun it had!

This. Minesweeper hates me so horribly. That or I am unlucky enough to get a mine early too many times...

Guild Wars - I didn't do the whole WoW thing cos it seemed stupid & expensive. I ended up getting hooked on GW instead. I love a good RPG, but since then, I've never been able to really enjoy one since.

All that grind, all the focus on interacting with 12 year old Leeroy Jenkinz wannabes just to get past a level, all the bots, the focus on getting to secret areas only when your LAN server wins a tournament, the cheaters who bought e-gold through Ebay & got runners to take them to the expensive armour shops, the lag issues etc.

...and then, at the point where I was beginning to think 'Hmm, maybe I'm wasting my life playing this game too much', there was a huge upsurge, a glitch that within a few minutes, rendered everyone's most valuable treasured posessions almost worthless, I switched off, uninstalled, and dumped the game in the bin.

It wasn't just a case of playing a game I loved & grew to hate, but it robbed me of really enjoying the RPG genre of games altogether. I'll never play another MMORPG again.

I second Ninja Gaiden (2). That game just WANTS you to fail, and laughs in your face when you do so, it's a coldharted SM mistress.

But ofcourse there is always Super Mario Land, with the biggest kick in the balls in the entire history of gaming. O I'm sorry, I just went almost literally through HELL and had to kill a gigantic dragon, and now YOU little fracking shroom are telling me that you're sorry that the princess is in another castle....*rage builds up, shenanigans involving gruesome gore ensue*

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney (specifically number 3)...I like the idea of the game and I'm playing it through regardless but the characters, story, dialogue, and most of the puzzles (which tend to follow a ridiculous train of thought) are just frustrating or downright god awful.

How the hell did you dump a digital game in the bin? did you chuck the HD away? It does mother you by telling you how many hours you're playing every hour, suggesting you need a break, though.
