So we have all heard of some players utter hatred for VATS or how a certain weapon makes the game too easy, yet some people still go for that weapon or hit the freeze time button dispite how much they hate it.

What games have you played with an OPTIONAL (as in you can choose not to use it) mechanic that you hated but still found yourself using time and time again?

VATS would really be the only case for me. Most games I come across have asinine mechanics you are forced to use.

VATS as you say is one of those that I don't like but still use, then there is fast travel on Oblivion though im doing a game right now where I will not fast travel at all, I find that so uch is missed when you do fast travel, it's quite sad really.

I really hope Skyrim removes that ability and replaces it with something like a coach service available from major cities only but then again, it's really up to the individual player as to how they will play their game so who am I to judge.

The light and shadow magic in castlevania lords of shadow, it wouldn't bother me so much if they just regenerated or auto absorbed the energy when you killed stuff, but having to constantly click the thumbsticks to absorb this stuff, especially when you do kind of need the light magic to stay alive in long fights becomes really bothersome.

It all reeks of Genma onimushu. fucking hell i hated those soul tug-o-wars with enemies.

This isn't something I do, but when people complain RD:R is too easy because of the auto aim. Which is a feature you can turn off.... *sigh*

Subtitles. It's a love/hate relationship, really. Sometimes I'm listenin to my music, and then get confronted with dialog soup. Then I turn of my music and turn on subtitles. But I forget to turn on my music again, so I have redundant subtitles.

I tried enjoying Oblivion on the 360 yesterday, and I hated the stealth system. I had to do it so I could go past the goblins easily, get out of the sewers, and go outside so I could turn off the game before almost dying from boredom.

That, doesn't, really, make, sense?

I don't like VATS that much (I don't know why someone would Hate it...), so I don't use it.

The weapon upgrades in ME1 come to mind. Whenever you get new ones, it's tedious as hell to go through all of you and your party members' guns to compare them to the ones you already have installed, but it puts you at a disadvantage if you don't use them.

Firing in real time without VATS in Fallout 3/NV. I really don't think it should be an option (me being an old-school Fallout fanboy), but they designed 'em as hybrid FPSes, so what is there to do besides download mods that re-balance the system?
...but yeah, I still snipe in real time, even though I consider it cheating... my stats say I shouldn't be that good of a shot, dammit!

It doesn't make it too easy. It makes it playable because the combat outside of VATS is just retarded, inaccurate, and it just barely works. It makes close combat a little too easy, but despite my being fairly good at FPS's, I can't seem to hit crap with any rifle.

I hate how expensive the "drink til the cutscenes are of bearable length and contain only penis jokes" is, but sometimes you just need it to get through the game.

Same. I enjoy FO3 combat a lot more in real-time, even if it probably does waste a lot of ammo, but in some circumstances, against some targets, I still use VATS, reluctantly, to compensate for FO3's first person shooting being absolutely dire.

Haha win. People who hate the RC Car don't like to admit that they use it themselves.
