It seems that the Half-Life series is getting to that point, but I think it has a much higher tolerance for that sort of thing because it is so good.

True, even on this website the freeman lovers are everywhere, but that will die down as soon as more games like Far Cry 2 come out(Probally gonna be best game of the year(Far Cry 2)!).O_O

I wouldn't say 'ruined'. They're good games, but half the posts from sites like 'No Mutants Allowed" makes me want to phsysically vomit.

That aside, I personally feel that every single MMORPG in the history of time deserves mention here. Except for Seed. Seed was awesome for the whole week it lasted.

Pretty much any console FPS game with online mltiplayer, thanks too all the dicks who feel the need to talk crap and taunt people or piss and moan at them if someone is differant (The English/American one being one of the most common) or when someone kills them...

Agreed - all other MMORPGs have a high level of elitism. Seed had one of the most friendly and open communities I've come across. Shame it didn't last.

SS2 fans. Largely because I am a big fan, and it ruined BioShock for me - the gameplay just seemed like SS2 lite.

any game with multiplayer invariably haas people playing who see winning streak stats as the only point in playing & believe their aparent awsomeness somehow elevates them to a level of existance that lets them s**t all over anyone (everyone) they percieve as below them.

Internet anonymity + nerd urge to feel big = bad mix for civil discourse :)

any game that have gone past having fans into having a full fledge of extreme fanboys/girls. And especially when a games over hyped. This is do to them becomeing extreme anti-fan of everything and anything else which no only ruins the game they like but also go out their way to ruin every other game - even if they do like it :/

Counter Strike is close to my heart so I have trouble accepting that it's been ruined by fans, however, I can see how someone would think that. Personally, I think it's been kept going by fans far longer than it had any right to. It was created by fans, there is tons of custom content which I think has helped it stay strong and every server is it's own community and all you have to do to have a good time is play random servers until you find a group of people you like. There are, however, a bajillion hackers, griefers, twelve year olds, and general idiots who play too so a good game can quickly turn to crap...

I want to say Warcraft III because I ultimately left due to the constant deluge of annoying asshats on battle.net but I also plays for months after I stopped doing regular games because of the custom games. Tower defense and defense of the ancients kept me going way longer than I should have.

If you want to see a game get ruined by it's fans. Come to the Team Fortress 2 forums on Steampowered.com and just wait for the griping to commence, if the front page isn't littered with threads about nerfing this or buffing that to begin with. They, I don't want to say cater, but respond to a lot of people's comments, and sadly the most vocal aren't necessarily the best judges. It seems like it's going downhill fairly fast...

Pretty much all of the "most popular with teenage audiences" games that involve teams of players shooting at each other. Halo and WoW are givens.

Observation: software > meatbags. Request: Can I shoot them now, master?

All too often good games are spoiled by hypercompetitive or mouthy fans. (I never did enjoy GoW multiplayer for just that reason, and yes it bothers me in the Halo series... and I wonder how much I'd enjoy CoD4 online given the "leveling" and concomittant snobbery.)

If the people at Valve listened to the people on the forums I think CS would be a very different game. So I don't think we have much to worry about.

I agree for the very same reasons. I wouldn't say that Ocarina of Time fans are ruining the series *yet*, but they certainly are threatening to stagnate it.

I also vote for SSB. Lots of bad experiences here...

This is reaching into the vaults a bit, but the Marvel vs. Capcom series in the arcade. A good Magneto/Spidey player could string together a combo that would destroy you without giving you a chance to move. I once got stuck playing a guy who did this. When I got caught in the combo and saw what was happening, I just walked away. The sad thing is that the guy kept playing.

I'm a Zelda fanboy, but I agree that it's time for a change. And by the way I LOVED what they did in Majora's and Wind Waker.

This is the most tragic one. It's hard to take Fallout fans seriously with NMA and RPGcodex around. Maybe if not for these people, I would actually hold out a bit of hope for Fallout 3 being a good Fallout game, but as it is, I imagine a lot of people at Bethesda think all Fallout fans are totally nuts.

As for Halo... am I the only one who doesn't constantly run into annoying squeakers and total douchebags during every match? I hear about those people ruing every game on XBL, but from personal experience, it seems the issue is vastly overstated. I suppose it may be in part because I rarely do anything other than lone wolves or doubles in Halo 3, and I hate Gears of War multiplayer to begin with.

They respond, but in a broad way. And they do not always give in.

Sonic.

Yeah, the developers take equal blame, but even the shit Sonic games actually sold quite well, well enough for them to continue up until 2006. Without the backlash of their games tanking at retail, Sonic Team never really caught on to the fact that they were Doing It Wrong.

I don't exempt myself from that criticism either, because it took until that 2006 abomination to stop me automatically buying anything with a funny coloured hedgehog in it.
