Whether they were surprisingly good, surprisingly shit, or just surprisingly mediocre what games surprised you.

I was surprised by how good republic commando was it was really good for a star wars title.

I was really surprised at how bad Medal of Honor: Airborne was. Even considering how the previous two I played were.

On the other hand, I was really impressed by the depth of story and level of tactics you needed to emerge victorious.

Kingdom Hearts 2. A friend bought it and I admonished him for getting it. Then I sat down to play it with him cause I had nothing else to do. I now own KH2, have finished the game and cannot stop playing because it is so damned GOOD!

GTA IV, I was on the hype train and everything looked so awesome. Then I got it and played it.
IT WAS AWESOME. I don't care what you all say, GTA IV has some of the best control mechanics of any game.

When I first saw the trailor for Gears of War (1), I actually said "That is probably the stupidest thing I have ever seen, that game is going to fail!"
...well, evidently I was WRONG, and now it's my religion...

Same, I really liked that game.

Halo Wars took me by suprise, I wasn't really a fan of RTS games before it.

At first I thought Saints Row 2 was just another GTA4 knock off but when I played it I found out how awesome it actually was. One of the best games I've played so far.

X-Blades. I'm playing it right now. I didn't expect much from the game, just some mildly entertaining combat, about 10 minutes in I realised:

"Wow, this is pretty frickin' terrible." I'm halfway through now, my opinion hasn't changed.

The original Fable did it for me. The hype leading up to it made me think it was going to be great. The reviews had me thinking that it was going to be decent.

Then I played it, and it was bad.

Before they came out and for several months afterward, I did not think that Knights of the Old Republic or The Witcher would be worth playing. I was pretty severely wrong.

Resident evil 5 actually. I never played any of the previous games and this one was surprisingly excellent. I beat it over and over again. Collected over 15 million dollars. Every Achievement except beating it on professional which is ridiculously hard and pretty much impossible without Infinite rockets and/or Lightening Hawk fully upgraded of course.

FF9 when I first played it. I judged by game art on the cover and felt it looked silly but after a few friends told me it was actually good, I decided to give it a go and I was really taken aback by the great story, solid characters and beautiful dialogue and world. Even the sidequests (auction house, chocobo hot and cold) were fun and I got sucked right in. Definitely not judging by the cover again :)

On the flip side, I bought Baroque for the cover art and it blew chunks, so do your research before you go for/against pretty/ugly box art! XD
