I love games but I'm a novice. I was born into the PS2 generation and as such I've never experienced a true challenge. Do you know any hard games that would hand you your arse but then hand it back and stich it on by being slightly forgiving. I tried playing I wanna be the guy (fuck you bullet bill) but the jump in difficulty is to great so what games would be good to work my way up.

Final Fantasy Tactics, Onimusha Dawn of Dreams, Burnout 3 Takedown, Fatal Frame, Devil May Cry and Ratchet: Gladiator/Deadlocked should hold you over until you get your PS3.

Dragon Age Origins, the easy is REALLY easy, but some of the boss fights on normal can be difficult. Hard and Insane(not sure if it is called this) were very tough to play, especially with friendly fire being on for these two.

Demon's Souls is hard, but not impossible aslong as you keep your head about.

Hmmm Modern Warfare will hand your ass to you, but thats mostly because of the infinite respawn baddies. You can also crank the difficulty on Fallout 3, but that was still not a real challenge for me.

Yep. Bethesda games on high difficulties aren't harder, they just take longer.

How come nobody mentioned F-Zero GX yet? Even to seasoned players the cups are pretty challenging on the highest difficulty so long as you're not cheesing them with the über-racers you can build...
But the story missions. Oh sweet merciful christ the story missions. Mission 7 on Very Hard is so painful I'd rather nail my tongue to a freight train than have another go at it.

Yeah but the problem is that game is too hard.

I did the Story on Very Hard, never doing that again. Grand Prix Master is alright though, apart from Phantom Road.

Particularly annoying in Oblivion... whacking a troll 300 times while running in a circle around him isn't fun.

And goddamn that stagger mechanic...

I hate games when higher difficulty=bad guys with more HP/who do tons of damage. Give me something like Timesplitters, where the tougher difficulty bad guys just become better shots and a little more likely to use clever tactics like ambushing and planting mines or using the best guns properly.

I personally find games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band tend to be fairly forgiving on a given difficulty (minus a few songs like "Raining Blood" and "Through the Fire and Flames"). All it takes is a little practice to pass a song that kicks your butt for a while.

I third the Demons Souls vote. This game will kick your arse but will leave you wanting more because, this is the important part, it's not unfair. Everytime you die it's because you werent paying attention, and the game makes you realise this.

Fouth Demons Souls. It can be difficult, you've just gotta keep your wits about you and be super vigilant.
I also found single player COD4 on vetran to be rather irking. Getting towards the end gives you no end of grief. But both are too fun not to try!

The Original Rayman for PS1.You need 100% to complete the game.

Or if you're willing to sacrafice the "gives you a chance part" then try Nineball Seraph in Armored Core 2:Another Age
