This is a fairly simple one: which games do you think lived up to and deserved the massive amount of hype they generated?

My vote goes a very special game:

Not the actual box art but I like this one more.

So that's my opinion. What's yours? Do you agree with my choice?

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

Also, Fable 3 very nearly lived up to the hype for me, until a certain point.

I was going to say Portal 2 as well.

Mass Effect 2 also.

Struggling to think of others, I'm pretty good about not getting engulfed in hype these days.

Also: 11111 posts! What does this mean?!

Won't be able to make a call on Portal 2 for a while (I just don't have the cash) but I will say Batman: Arkham Asylum. Very excited for City and I'm hoping it does the same.

Sorry, but Halo: Reach. And I'll have to wait to actually get Portal 2 before I make that judgement. I hope so.

Oblivion lived up to its hype. And beyond its hype. So tasty.

New Vegas also did, although tons of people probably had less awesome experiences with it than I did (I played through every faction, and I'm still not bored of it).

New Vegas for me. First game I got excited for ever since I was so disappointed with Smash Bros. Brawl (nothing could have lived up to that hype, to be fair). Aside from glitches, it was everything Fallout 3 should have been.

My vote goes to Fallout 3. Even without the glitches, I liked the wide and deep DC wasteland more than the Mojave which seemed more like a Hollywood backlot and the only random encounters were with beasts. In DC I would run into all sorts of weirdos. I did like the branching FNV story more though; unfortunately I didn't play through them all because the game is broken.

The next most recent game to Fallout 3 that I think lived up to the hype is GTA San Andreas. Sure it had a lot of hype but it also had a lot of game.

Well here's the thing: I enjoyed Fallout 3. I thought, yeah exploration and atmosphere wise it is better than New Vegas no doubt. Level design is much better than New Vegas, some of the areas in New Vegas are simply confusing and extremely annoying to navigate. But my problem is that, the writing is bad, the story itself is bad, and it just feels like the transferred over the factions from the original games without much justification (the Enclave was nearly destroyed by the end of 2, Super Mutants were nearly destroyed as well (I know Vault 87 is where they originated in the East but it still seemed like they were turned into generic orcs)) The game hits it's absolute low point when you get to Little Lamplight though.

I don't like how they turned everything from a relatively gray series and turned it into a black and white/good and evil morality system (I know New Vegas retained karma, but that took a backseat to reputation, and there wasn't anyone like Three Dog who magically knew if you were good or evil).

Writing wise, it sucked, but everything else was pretty good and I've spent alot of time playing it. I wish the main quest varied depending on your choices though, as it's going to be exactly the same whether you are good or evil or whatever choice you make.

You?ll get no argument from me on that. Fallout 3 would?ve been near perfect if it had more of a storyline like FNV. The thing is that with games like that, I usually spend the least amount of time playing through the story so it ends up not being as important as the locations and experiences outside the story.
With F3, I probably spent most of my time (first playthrough at least) looking for skill books and unique items. In the process of hunting down these items I came across all sorts of other interesting stories, hidden quests, random encounters, and of course deep and involving locations. Things I never would?ve found if I stuck to the lackluster story.

AC brotherhood has to be one of the best sequels ever made.. Though i have not tried Portal 2 yet..

On the other hand, Saints Row 2 up'd the ante quite a bit beeing superb to GTA in every way..

Every Valve game ever.
I have to say L4D2 was kinda a combo breaker. It wasn't that good, probably due to it having the replayability of a colouring book, but either way it's still pretty fun while you've still got achievements and glitches to mess around with. The game loses it's novelty after that and becomes "Just another zombie FPS". I could name worse examples either way.
*Cough* Sonic 2006 *Cough*
I can't really think of any examples that haven't been said, but that's due to me prefering the games no-one else seems to, like Tenchu Z.
