How did doom 3 ever live up to it predecessors? it was complete garbage. Sure they has the best looking game at the time but the game play was terrible. Flash light tag with terrible looking monsters and weapons that looked and felt appalling.

Mass Effect 2

I was so, so hyped up for that game I couldn't even sleep the night before it was released... and then it turned out to be even better than I'd hoped.

Portal. (Haven't played the sequel yet) I only played Portal for the first time at the end of last year, so going into it I was well aware of how stellar a reputation it has and I honestly didn't think it could live up to that.

It more than lived up to the hype. By the time I finished the game it had leapt onto my all time top 10 list and is, in my opinion, the most perfectly designed game I've ever played.

Hope I don't get yelled at for this, but Battlefield 2142 for me was one that totally lived up to the hype, because it tried and succeeded to do something that was actually different. Titan scenarios were fantastic and something that could not really be repeated by subsequent titles. I also think that the aircraft handling was possibly the best I have come acros to date in terms of accessability. It was the first game that got me to join a clan, and by extension got me into forums. I really hope there will be a Battlefield 2143.

Just my 2 cents.

GTA IV, pretty much flawless in my opinion.

Others worthy of note: Vice City, COD4, Black, Manhunt, Tekken 3, GTA 1 and Super Mario Land.

Every Valve game ever.
I have to say L4D2 was kinda a combo breaker.
I'd also say it's not a perfect example because I really haven't seen much hype for any Valve game besides Portal and Half Life 2 Episode 3 which is getting the same kind of "when will this ever happen" kind of hype Duke Nukem Forever had.

Mass Effect 2 comes to mind straightaway, as does LittleBigPlanet 2.

Chalk up another one for New Vegas. Absolutely love that game. Currently working on my 4th playthrough, having accumulated over 150 hours on the previous three files. I'm helplessly addicted, and I couldn't be happier with that fact.

Games that I personally was hyped for? Portal 2, Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2 (after playing Mass Effect that is)

Other games that were very good, but not quite as good as the hype would have had me believe: Gears of War 2, Halo Reach and Dragon Age 2.

Recently? Uncharted 2. Screw the haters. Solid, solid game with a pretty amazing campaign all the way through. Although hype wasn't an issue for me, I picked it up day one cuz I knew if it was at least as solid as the first game I'd enjoy it, and it blew the first game away. It was the Dark Knight to the first games' Batman Begins.

I wasn't even expecting the multiplayer to warrant a second glance from me but to this day it's one of the few multiplayer modes I play. The hype came afterwords and in my humble opinion it was all warranted.

I was going to say Portal 2 as well.

Mass Effect 2 also.

Struggling to think of others, I'm pretty good about not getting engulfed in hype these days.

Also: 11111 posts! What does this mean?!
You will get Skyrim on release?

Oh no wait, thats Uncharted 3. 11.1.11.

Skyrim is 11.11.11.

To you maybe.

The game did everything id said it would do. The gameplay was classic doom mixed with state of the art visuals. That was exactly what was promised. I had no issues with the sound, either.

Just because you didn't like some of the design choices doesn't mean it was a 'terrible' game. It lived up to the hype: expecting something other than what was promised is nothing more than excessive 'fan' expectation.
