What game(s) have been the ones that have either made you buy a new console/PC/device or at least made you come close to buying one?

For me I am always thinking about buying a new, high powered PC so that I can play MMOs, as I don't currently play online at all.

How about you?

Pokemon games are the sole reason I get the newest Nintendo handheld. I still have an old DS since none of the Pokemon games require DSi/3DS.

Zelda makes me buy Nintendo consoles, and Forza 5 would make me buy the next Xbox. Although I'll probably buy the next Xbox anyway. That is to say I know it'll be coming so I won't wait for it to release. But that's assuming all the terrible rumours about the next Xbox aren't true. I can't really think of any game that would make me buy a PS3/PS4. If there was I guess I would have done it by now. PC on the other hand isn't so simple as just buying one.

Bought an Amiga for Speedball2
Bought a SNES for Ganbare Goemon and Zelda
Bought a 3DO for Star Control
Bought a Saturn for Sega Rally
Bought a PS1 for Soul Edge
Bought an N64 for Goldeneye
Bought a PC (a terrible one) for Dungeon Keeper
Bought a Dreamcast for Soul Calibur and MSR
Bought a PS2 for "some metal gear game I didn't like"
Bought an Xbox for Jet Set Radio future
Bought a Gamecube for Ikuruga
Bought an 360 for Oblivion

Then I finally manned up and got a decent PC which plays almost all the above, but got it primarily to play X3 Terran Conflict.

Nintendo games make me buy every Nintendo console, there aren't many 3rd party games that really tempt me, it's always their own. I'd say they're my favourite console games, although I guess I'm a sucker for the Xbox and the Halo series due to me being a huge multiplayer gamer.

upgraded old PC's video card to play starcraft 2. since that died, getting new gaming computer. first thing in it will be starcraft 2. does that count?

i guess my PS3 to play demon's souls and god of war 3. otherwise its console first, then games - not to say the games aren't the appeal, but its usually how the initial games look that make or break my purchase - even if i don't buy them immediately. although mario games are always, always fun.

Usually it's just Nintendo's games that makes me want their consoles. They've been doing a bad job keeping up with that tradition lately. I still don't want a 3DS, and I'm completely lukewarm to the WiiU.

What he said. Pokemon is all I use my handhelds for. Well, Kirby as well. Yep, Pokemon and Kirby.

The Kingdom Hearts series is particularly bad at this. If you played all of the games when they first launched, you would have needed a PS2, a GBA, a DS, a PSP, a mobile phone compatible with the game they put out, and a 3DS. Now they've ported the GBA game to the PS2 and I think the same with the mobile game, and you can play the DS game on the 3DS, but still. That is a ridiculous number of consoles to keep up with a franchise as young as Kingdom Hearts (yes I realize it's about 10 years old, but when was the last time you saw a franchise that requires 6 consoles in 10 years?).

But because I still love the series, I will be buying a 3DS as soon as I start earning some money from my new job.

I'm looking out for a PSvita emulator.
It's becoming so very hard to not want Persona 4 Golden and it's hard to justify $400+ for one game.
Damnit I might just shell out soon.

I upgraded my GPU for BF3 and before that for Fallout 3, before that...my PSU blew up and I had to replace everything but my case and HDD.

I...I've not bought a console for anything.

I remember getting a new laptop pretty much entirely so I could play The Sims! The graphics card on my old computer was completely incompatible (a lot of people had this problem) so I persuaded my parents to get me a laptop as a (very) early combined birthday and Christmas present.

Oh, and I've come close with Journey a few times. It just doesn't seem sensible to buy even a second-hand PS3 just because I want to play a two-hour indie game!

Well, Fallout: New Vegas will end up being the main reason I upgrade my PC once I get the money and time. Otherwise, I'd be happy to just have my PS3 for the big AAA titles and my PC for the less demanding retro and indie games, and I'm usually content to just admire any game that I can't play on either from afar. But New Vegas is important enough to me that I would actually be willing to buy new hardware just to play it, and it's pretty much unplayable on my PS3, so PC is the only other place I can turn.

Grand Theft Auto. I would have been fine with just a gamecube, until Xboxes got cheap and a double pack of GTA came out. Same for 360. I was fine with Wii, but GTA 4 meant I had to upgrade. It was nonnegotiable.

It is sad how many posts are about Nintendo not really selling themselves this generation. I thought I was just getting older and jaded. They seem to keep making sequels and ports of games I didn't like in the first place. And I honestly didn't like either of the two Wii Zeldas half as much a Ocarina through Wind Waker.

Back before the prequels, Star Wars games always did it. I could live without an N64... until I saw Shadows of the Empire. I could have gotten a PS2... before I saw Rogue Squadron 2. The first game I had for Xbox was Knights of the Old Republic. It's too bad there aren't really amazing Star Wars games anymore.
