The games that make me proud to be a gamer, that I show friends who don't understand what's all the fuss about, are probably these three:
The Longest Journey
Braid
Baldur's Gate II

All three share the same things that make gaming so fun in the first place: An excellent plot, told with a great narrative; characters you can relate to; a sense of choice; and, probably most importantly, they present the player with a question he cannot answer, a question that makes him stop and think before he answers. These are the three games I keep returning to, no matter what. These games make me proud.

Legacy of Kain series
SW:KOTOR
Dragon Age: Origins
Shenmue 1+2
Grandia 2
Jak and Daxter, 2, 3
Guild Wars (all of it)
ES4: Oblivion
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Final Fantasy X. Yeah, I know, FF, how original.. I just love how the menu theme, "To Zanarkand" sets the tone. Apart from Star Wars, Mass Effect and Soul Reaver, I have never experienced a game where the first piece of music you hear pretty much explains the whole story.

Portal - Because I can envision no one who wouldn't enjoy it, or be able to play it.
Chrono Trigger - The first game I recall that had a truly intricate and really gripping storyline.
Bioshock - Because games can in fact be based around some of the most profound (if wrong) writings on the human condition.
Minecraft - Because it blurs the lines between a graphics editor and a game. If there is no game that is art, than that is because minecraft has ceased to exist.
Legend of Zelda - because it was so incredibly ahead of its time. I mean, compared to any game of its generation, the gameplay, and concepts, were off the chart.
Eve Online - Because there is 'emergent' gameplay, and then there's Eve, which makes everything else look as emergent as tetris.

Red Dead Redemption for being the best movie I saw last year.
Call of Duty 4 for balancing single player and multiplayer
Pokemon for my childhood
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Oblivion for being the best in every way (even the bad parts are somehow bad in a good way). That's just my opinion.

You picked borderlands... really?

Anyway, I'd say EvE, and Minecraft off the top of my head. Both show the duality of humanity quite nicely.

My non-gaming friends can't seem to stop playing Assassin's Creed 2, Red Dead Redemption, or World of Goo when they're over, so I'm going to have to go with those.

Personally, I'd choose Professor Layton.

Pong. It proves that we have a rich history as gamers, and have come a long, long way...

Ahhh Ico. I don't know what it is about it but I could pick it up again right now and it would still feel new to me.

Jet Set Radio also makes my list due to how crazy it looks and the awesome soundtrack.

I'd say Bioshock. It's got a great story, interesting gameplay and a wonderful atmosphere.
This for a different reason (sort of).

On a plane I was reading a Game Informer magazine, and my dad said to me "Ya Know, some kid thinks up all this blood and death and puts it in a video game for you to mindlessly slaughter people."

It happened to be an issue demonstrating the top 30 characters.

It had a very well written article on Andrew Ryan, so I just showed him how deep the character lines can get.

I got a raised eyebrow and a "hmmm" from him

hmm im going to make a list here, i hope you don't mind, there not in any particular order btw.

1. Terranigma, it may start off cheesy, but damn i was in tears at the ending, and that makes me proud as a gamer.

2. remember 11, i haven't been this griped yet confused by a storyline before or since playing this, and well its just plain awesome awesome.

3. bg2 tob, do i really need to say anything about this one, its probably already been mentioned.

4. narcissu, if a game can invoke emotions then it makes me proud to be a gamer.

5. civilization well more specifically civ 3, even tough i suck at it, it still makes me fell proud to show someone it with a smug look on your face and just be able to say "im creating a entire civilization, muhahahahahahahahaha." and well that makes me proud.

6. Hellsinker, its just looks so damn good. ehm anyway moving on.

7. the total war series (now this i can play). Seriously i can go on for hours as to why these games are awesome and why any gamer should use this as an example over why they should be proud as gamers, buti cant be bothered right now its 2 am after all.

8. and of course ever 17.

note these are only a few that spring to mind, i could come up with a more exhausting list if i was bothered but, well im not, so small list execute.

Counter-Strike: Source

I don't see why I should be proud of it, but they haven't come up with a better competitive multiplayer FPS.

I doubt they ever will.

I'm more proud of the people in the gaming community. Sure there are vocal racists/sexists/homophobics/etc. but overall gamers are pretty open to others.

As for actual games, I think the ones that accomplish something:
Horror games- good ones use psychology to scare the player
Mass Effect games- I found the characters believable and compelling, same with the story
Plenty of Indie or Flash games- great social commentary and satire
Even games like COD can show the darker reality of war, though it is usually used as controversy to sell the game.
