X-Com: UFO Defense. Alternative title, UFO: Enemy Unknown.

It's exactly what you're looking for. A classic game that blended genres and was rated by IGN as the best game of all time for a few years. If there was ever one game to play, that might be it.

I could go ahead and list my favourite games here, but I don't expect everyone the like them. So I'm going with these three:

Pac Man
Tetris
Pong

If your comp can handle it, Crysis. Either 1 or two. They are quite good games, despite a lot of their reputation being purely for graphics, and Crysis 1 was a true PC title. Other than that, Battlefield 2 was great, Spore is kinda Childish but good for if you ever want to play something like that, As has been said the KoTORs, Portals, Starcrafts, Warcraft 3 (As 1 & 2 probably wouldn't run on anything new their that old), Civ IV (I do not like 5, though it may be easier for newcomers to the series they just simplified it too much for my taste), The Bioshocks, Rise of Nations was good, Sins of a Solar Empire is probably the best space RTS I have ever played, the Total war series are good, Both the new and old Deus Exs, Mass Effect 1 & 2, Dragon Age Origins, Baldur's gate, the Witcher 1 & 2, the X series, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 and too many others for me to name.
This is seriously just too big a topic to cover.

Kotor 2 (maybe 1)
Huh... you thought KotOR 2 was better than 1? Most people I've encountered (myself included) think the opposite (felt it was mainly because 2 doesn't build on 1 much at all gameplay-wise and I hated what they did to the racing mini-game, though I admit, loved the story).

OT: Most titles have already been mentioned, so I'll just contribute 'Total War' and say 'go nuts'. That said, your mates have given you titles, why not go with them, and you probably won't need to pay for anything, especially the older titles.

Copy/Pasted from past topics where people asked this question.

Well if you're into everything, guess I'll just recommend my personal favourites from the gog site.

First of all, I consider this series pretty much mandatory for any rpg fan: Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2. In my mind Biowares finest work to date and the pinaccle of what an rpg should strive to be. Solid narrative, great characters, surprisingly vibrant 2D artwork even today, entertaining tactical combat, absolutely massive open world... I seriously can't think of any real major flaws in the series. It's absolutely brilliant. And then when you consider there are mods out there which combine BG1 and 2 into one cohesive game as well as improve and tweak the experience towards perfection, then really you just can't get any better. Though other rpg try such as...

Planescape: Torment. You might've heard of this game, hell, I'll bet there's another active topic about it in these forums right now. Bluntly put this game has by far the best fantasy story and one of the most unique styles and setting in any game, regardless of genre, ever. It's not disputable, it's fact. In terms of story, setting and character Planescape: Torment is one of the most in-depth and provocative games ever made. If only the combat and the basic gameplay mechanics were more solid it'd probably be my number 1 pick for rpg ever. But as it is it comes a close second, which considering how many rpg I've played, is still damned impressive methinks.

Stepping a bit away from pure rpg we've got the absolutely spectacular Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It's a hard game to describe to someone that might not be familiar with this sort of game, so I'll just say it's brilliant and that everything this game does, it does exceptionally well. This is another of those 'I can't think of any real flaws' sort of games, so much so that despite being well over ten years old, I've introduced this game to kids who hadn't even been born when it came out and seen them enjoy it! Now that's the sign of a solid, long lasting experience!

If you wanna give the old Point & Click classic PC adventure games a try, my personal favourite is The Longest Journey. Despite all the gushy mushy love I just gave to Planescape above, this is the game which in terms of story and character really stole my heart. Planescape is deeper, more in-depth and covers a number of more touchy subject but The Longest Journey... well, it's got soul. The main protagonist is my favourite of any game and her journey throughout the games length is enthralling. It's like a really, really nice book for me that I like to re-read every once and awhile for that fuzzy warm feeling of nostalgic happiness. Even nostalgia wont blind me to the shit puzzles and gameplay, but screw that, use a walkthrough if you have to. The story is worth it in my mind!

And as a final suggestion for something more actiony if that's you're thing: Freespace 2. The space sim that was so good it killed the genre... or at least I like to think so. Simply put the story is solid but the gameplay so awesomely intense that you'll be suffering from shellshock and probably need to have your fingers pried from the joystick (I bought a force-feedback joystick exclusively for this game. So worth it!) with a pair of pliers when it's done. Not only that, but of all the games I just listed, this is probably the easiest to get into since a couple of years ago the developers released the games source code online, and as a result the community has been improving the engine ever since to such an extent that it still looks fantastic today. This game is so good at what it does it's become an entire genre unto itself, with so many mods and even total conversion that buying this game is like buying the last ten years worth of amazing space sims all in one. I kid you not!

And there you go! Between those five games (Technically 6 since there's 2 BG games!) that's enough PC gaming goodness to keep a normal human occupied for... hell, well over a year especially if they take the time to play the games fully and explore the communities which have sprung up around each game.

If you want a more recent game I'd really highly recommend the STALKER series. They're absolutely brilliant and in my mind are the best fps to have been released in years, a nearly completely unique experience you just wont find on consoles unfortunately, though perhaps that's for the better as the developers made no compromises in the gameplay experience.

Half-Life series, Portal 1&2, Doom, Age of Empires, Minecraft, Mass Effect 1&2, The Elder Scrolls series (especially Morrowind and Oblivion on pc- Mods!), Fallout 3 (Mods & more mods), Halo 1 and/or 2 for PC (because of the mods), Mods, Monkey Island, Team Fortress 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Crysis (if you dare) and lots of others I can't remember off the top of my head. Oh and the Civilization series (preferably II and IV), even my family plays it, and they aren't fans of games.

Unreal Tournament is the pinnacle of online fps. Unfortunately, the online community has dwindled for the original UT (my favorite) and ut3 but ut2k4 still has a substantial following. Deus Ex is the best single player shooter.

For strategy, starcraft 2 is my preference; though, many would demand that you drop whatever you're doing and go and buy company of heroes right this instant.

Absolutely 100% spot on. Btw its something like 5 dollars on Steam.

In addition to X-Com I would recommend games like
Tropico 3 or 4
Deus Ex
Civilization 4 (the best one)
StarCraft 1 and 2
Homeworld
Jagged Alliance 2
Startopia
Theme Hospital
Roller Coaster Tycoon
Frontier Elite II or Frontier: First Encounters

Mmm, yes second Total War, Medieval Total War 2, haven't played Shogun, nor Rome, but I'm told both are quite good also.

Well I hate the start of KOTOR 1 (KOTOR 2 was also bad), and I played a fair amount of KOTOR ages ago, but honestly not enough to reccomend it.

X-Com: UFO Defense. Best PC game of all time.
Planescape: Torment. Fantastic storytelling.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Play vanilla, then play with the fan patches.
Jagged Alliance 2. X-Com with personality.
Deus Ex. It's Deus Ex.
Freespace 2. Best if you have a decent joystick.
Interstate 76. Yes it is meant to look like that. Shut up and press "q".

I don't know if you would consider it a "classic", but Dawn of War + expansions.

You just have to experience one of (if not the most) the most quotable games ever!

Agreed on the Fable, it's amazing fun (both as a hero and a tw@t) just avoid fable 2 and 3 (though on the PC that won't be a problem as they never ported fable 2)

I agree with everything said there. Fable: TLC is unique and great, but also because things go horribly wrong with Fable 2/3.
