Games that need a second chance

So some thoughts had been stirring in my noggin for the past day or two. I remember in high school I used to be a pretty big hipster even if I didn't know what the term even was until well after I had grown out of it. I never liked the popular games. I never gave games that looked "realistic" a try, choosing to stick with the more stylized and cartoonish games. It eventually got to the point that if the game was over hyped by everyone I just wrote it off. As a result I missed out on several good games. To my eternal shame Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City were among them. I do own them now, though I've yet to finish them. I got to talked with my friend who is a big Halo fan and CoD came up. At which point I actually found myself in favor of Halo on something for once. As simple as it was I said something along the lines of "At least Halo embraces the concept of color."

I had played Halo 3 with my brother off and on when it first came out. He was big into it and I'd normally be forced or just begrudgingly play an online match with him. I actually wasn't half bad at it either. After I got over my extreme Halo hate and it became more of a dislike then a hate I freely admit that Halo, or at least Halo 3, is a well designed game. It also had a better story campaign than most FPS games. A sprawling sci-fi epic that would be some kind of standard until Mass Effect thoroughly destroyed it later on. So why have I told you about this? Reason is because I am thinking about giving Halo another shot. I admit that I never gave it a fair shot. I have given every single Sonic game a fair shot with 06 being the ONLY ONE that stands out a major disappointment for me. I never gave Halo that chance and I'm kind of regretting it. So my fellow escapists has this happened to you at any point or do you think there is game series out there you never gave a fair chance because of personal biases or hatreds? If so which ones and do you think you are going to give them a fair shot this time?

It's really weird to hear someone talk about the Arkham games like they're old history. "Oh man, I remember those games of way back in 2009 and 2011, back in the glory of my youth. Ah yes, those were the days."

Maybe I'm just getting old.

Anyway, a few months back I found myself wanting to give Dark Souls another chance. I enjoyed it somewhat more the second time, after I'd spent some time reading up on the wiki about builds and mechanics.

I should probably take another swing at Crusader Kings 2 at some point. Reading what people say about it makes it sound like there's a fun game in there. Sadly, my first attempt basically consisted of playing the woefully inadequate tutorial, then taking one glance at the GUI before saying, "Oh fuck off", and uninstalling.

You might have heard this advice before, but I'd recommend skipping the tutorial, and just starting a game as an Irish lord. We call Ireland "Tutorial Island" because it's actually quite easy to take over the whole place and form the Kingdom of Ireland, during which time you will have come to understand most of the important mechanics, and you're under very little threat the entire time. From there, you're in a fairly secure position to proceed with whatever strikes your fancy. That was how my very first game of CK II went, and I'd recommend it to anyone playing for the first time.

Well the first Arkham game is coming up on 5 years old which is kind of old for a video game these days. It just feels like its been a lot longer then that and Asylum was the one where I remember all the major hype happening.

Despite the fact that I've got a couple of friends that are wanting me to get Steam - yeah, I still don't have Steam yet :p - so they can gift me Civ 5 and it's expansions, I'm just now getting into the series thanks to the release of Civ Rev for free on Games for Gold. Gotta say I'm really enjoying it too.

That said.........has anyone noticed how "cartoonishly racist" these games are? At least the one I'm playing. I don't know about the others, but the fact that none of the characters in this game actually speak their own language but rather just kinda mumble some silly nonsense words that sound like their language seems a bit racist to me...like they're just stereotyping the language (the Zulu Nation would be the worst offender in this case). Granted, I don't speak 16 different languages, but considering the fact that the Americans and British don't actually speak understandable English, I can only assume that it's the same case for the other cultures represented. In that case, I guess they're at least being equal opportunity offenders. :p

I'm not offended by it or anything, just something that's kinda stood out to me.

I should go back and give Ni No Kuni another chance...I played for about an hour or two so I'm only really able to fight things by bopping them in the head with a stick after all. There are other JRPGs that I should give another chance...basically anything that doesn't have turn-based combat. I have a pretty huge bias against that kind of thing (which is part of why I stopped playing Ni No Kuni). The only game I really enjoyed that wasn't 100% turn-based combat was Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

I never finished X-Men Legends despite my love of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance but what I should really give another chance to is Justice League Heroes which was the DCU equivalent.

I don't know about Civilization Revolution, but in Civ V proper they have the leaders speaking their actual language, or at least the best modern approximation if the language is both dead and obscure (ex. Atilla uses a few words of the Hun language and fills in with the modern language of where they originated geographically (I don't remember where or what at the time))

OT: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for me, I had heard about and like the idea for a while but when I played the demo on my 3DS I could not get past the camera and since the Circle pad pro is hard to find I gave up on trying it, when some people i talked to were talking about it again I tried it again. This time I was able to manage the camera with some practice and I am now able to enjoy the game.

I really think I should go back and give a second chance / finish The Witcher 2. I just got to a point which required me to grind and I just stopped playing. I know though that, if given the time, I would really enjoy it outside of this as I really like the aesthetics and the narrative and characters were engaging enough but I get so turned off by gameplay which is predicated on wasting my time...

I'm currently retrying SMT Nocturne. I bought it and gave it a little play time, but never got far. I had heard so much from others that the plot was so interesting and amazing, it turns out they were fucking liars, or only were talking about the idea of the plot, not the actual execution itself. All the characters just feel bland and the plot itself just feels to drag its feet. But, I want to give it another try.

I also need to give Devil Survivor 2 another shot. I just keep dying on this one fight, and I always rage quit, and I'm just not a big fan of the style that they used for the strategy part of it. I guess I got spoiled by FE: Awakening, it just feels so rugged in comparison, top that off with the turn based fights in between, it just left a weird taste in my mouth.

I've heard the excuses before.

"It's a DLC made into a full game"

"It's too wacky"

But I really think that people should give Saints Row IV another chance. It's fantastically fun. Buy it at a discount if you must but being the superpowered president is fun as hell and I don't want people to miss out.

Although all that is purely subjective, so maybe someone else will find some subjective reason that it's bad, call it "Objective" or "A plain fact" and call it a day, but whatever.

At some point, I will probably give GTA IV another chance. I enjoyed III, Vice City, and San Andreas. (And the original, for that matter, though I admit I never finished it.) I would just get to a certain point in IV and get irritated with it; it was like they had built so many systems into the game, all of which they had to make sure the player would use, that the "open world" almost never actually let players do things their own way. It was a better simulator of why a cell phone is a distinctly mixed blessing than it was a game.

But it's hard to fault a game for depth and ambition, even if the result grates on my nerves a bit. So I will probably give it another chance (my third, at this point) at some time in the future.

It just might not happen before Saint's Row V...

I played a few hours of Skyward Sword and couldn't really get into it. One of the weaker Zelda titles in my opinion, at least when it comes to my interest in playing it. But it is a genuinely good came with lots of fun stuff to do so I feel I ought to give it another chanse at some point, maybe then I can enjoy it as much as a lot of others seems to have.
