Either because of strict deadlines, money issues, or some other unforeseen travesties, some games come out, let's just say, half baked. However, in some instances, like in KOTOR 2's case, modders come to the rescue and turn a mediocre game that had good but poorly executed ideas into everything it was supposed to be. There are two games that I believe would benefit from this treatment:

Sword of the Stars II: A 4x space game that doesn't look like it was made in the early two thousands, this game had a lot going for it. However, clunky mechanics, lackluster ai, and unacceptably long turn times really made it so this game never got the recognition it should have.

X:Rebirth: The somewhat controversial latest installment to the X space simulation series, one thing that couldn't be argued was that it was very pretty. But overly complicated mechanics and game-breaking bugs ultimately soured opinions on this game.

Capatcha does well by describing these games as "sick puppies".

Sonic 2006. Granted, a lot of elements were bad ideas, but I don't mind it as much as other people because of 3 things: if a tad uninspired, graphics are actually pretty impressive, the music is great, and some concepts with the game actually sound really good on paper, particularly the whole time-travel storyline aspect and the sort of Sonic Adventure-style gameplay.

I mean it wouldn't be the greatest thing ever, but I'd say it's an interesting candidate for a remake.

The last 3 Harry Potter games. They had so much potential but were squandered on mediocre rip-offs of other genres. An open-world game that offered more of "the Hogwarts Experience" instead of gimmicks and shitty graphics would be a great remake.
