Games that over-hype their graphics

Resistance 2. Metal surfaces, enemies and allies are the only things which have very good graphics. Everything else seems to be from a PS2 game.

This may start a flame war... but if you play games for graphics you're just sad. Gears looks fantastic to me... I suppose the only game I could notably talk about the graphics in would be Crysis or some of the Final Fantasy entries.

But really, I'm way more impressed by physics and rendering speeds than I am by graphics. Come on people, Yahtzee already said it... we're about as real as graphics are going to get for the time being, why do we keep insisting on better graphics? So long as it doesn't look like ass we should shut up about it.

Not quite the point. We're just talking about games that over-hype the graphics. Not talking about them killing the games.

Actually, it is the point... games hype graphics because people still seem to care about how something looks over how it plays. Also, if you're disappointed by something that still looks amazing, maybe you need to not care so much about the visuals and then the graphics won't be 'overhyped'.

Gears of War! I'm sorry it looks horrid. It has a horrible mixture of realism and cel shaded. It doesn't work one bit. Either go for one or the other guys, seriously. Gears & Gears 2 are 2 of the most awful looking games I have played. Yes the graphics are up to date and extremely detailed and blah blah blah, but artistically it's horrible.

The Conduit.

I know that's petty saying that about a Wii game but I mean by god Okami was 1000x better through its water colors and that wasn't even originally a wii game.

The Conduit looks like total ass for a current generation game.

I remember when they were so excited that they were able to get the Wii's hardware to do normal mapping. Hell, you could get the PS2 or Gamecube hardware to do normal mapping, but whenever you try and get normal mapping to work on inferior hardware it looks like butt.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this thread was Halo 3. All the hype about the 360's new graphics, and Halo 3 making the most of this new technology. The end product? A very slight improvement on Halo 2 in my opinion.

Gears of War's promotion was practically built on the graphics, at least for the first game. Granted, it really did look nice (technically; artistically it was a brown-fest), but the hype for it was massive.

Also, not sure if I should say Crysis; on one hand, it was promoted on graphics enough to make Gears of War blush, but on the other hand, I really would consider it the benchmark for PC technical capabilities.

I waited an extra month so Nvidia could do their amazing improved graphics and "PhysX" bull crap.
The result? Oh joy, papers fly around when I run over them, WORTH THE WAIT GUYS!

how they showed gameplay and it does look better... wasnt the e3 gameplay even stagged?

Sorry guys, but if you are seriously saying that your game looks like a 360/PS3 title on the Wii, and that becomes the bulk of your marketing, that game will start to look worse and dated.
