I can of one that has always pissed me off... Advent Rising. Game ends with huge cliffhanger and then we never hear anything from the wannabe Halo series. Let me rephrase that good wannabe Halo series. I replayed that game like 50 times, have no idea why it never got a sequel.

So what games have have you all played that set themselves up for a sequel yet they never happened.

Bulletstorm was supposed to get a sequel, but it got cancelled because Epic wanted another Gears of War before the console generation ended. Shame too, because it really was a fun game.

Should we go ahead and acknowledge the elephant in the room?

Yeah, let's acknowledge the elephant in the room:

My brain tells me it will eventually happen...but my heart has lost all hope that it will.

Okay, actual answer: Beyond Good and Evil. If that sequel finds its way out of development hell, the world will be a slightly brighter place in my eyes.

StarControl 2, with the whole Mark II and such.

Sad to hear there was no StarControl 3 made.

Ever. No one tried. Seriously.

Yeah, Advent Rising was a lot of fun.

Aside from the plot/locations, which were really just boilerplate sci-fi to be honest, it wasn't really much like Halo, though. The guns were probably some of the least fun things actually in the game.

Anyway, how about a terrible game that had the conceit to believe it would get a sequel, and thus decided to eschew an ending entirely? Like, say, The Cursed Crusade.

And I wouldn't say it particularly set itself up for a sequel, but the ending to Mirror's Edge never denied the possibility of continuing Faith's story. Five years later...

Psi-Ops ended with a "To Be Continued" message. I'm not sure if they even started developing the sequel.

I was disappointed when I found out there'd never be another. The plot was shit, but there was a lot they could have done with the gameplay. More sandboxy levels would have made it one of my favourite games ever.

Multiplayer deathmatch would have been kick-ass, too...

I thought Advent Rising was pretty cool, if you could look beyond the glaring technical issues it had. The problem with AR is that it absolutely tanked in sales so they didn't make the second (and third) one even thought it was very publically planned as a trilogy. To me, as much as I would have liked to see the rest of the series, I still find that to be okay. They were at least honest in saying "Hey, we're going for 3 games here" even if they didn't make it to that point.

My issue is that pretty much every game these days (and every movie, really) seems to set up a sequel. Every title these days seems to have at least include a wink and nod towards a potential sequel.

XIII. We hardly knew ye.

I wish they'd make an Archer game that looked like XIII. I mean c'mon- looks just like it!

Well... sort of?

Hell yeah! Somebody SHOULD make Archer game! In the spirit of No One Lives Forever 1/2, it would be freaking awesome!

I never played it but Too Human was an archetypal example of this. Yahtzee's review of it remains one of my favorite ZP's of all time.

I remember reading somewhere that when the company that made Too Human went down the game itself became 'illegal' to sell or something. So not only is it not going to get a sequel but the original game is being wiped out of existence.

Ouch! Even for a sucky game that's gotta hurt!

A proper sequel to Prince of Persia (2008), I still don't get why people didn't like that game it was at least better than Warrior Within. It had well developed characters but then it just ended on such a downer note and seeing as Ubisoft is just releasing Assassins Creed over and over again we'll probably never see another Prince of Persia game again or at least for a long time, I mean they have to reboot again eventually isn't that like the law of video games now or is that just movies?

A new Dark Cloud game would also be nice though that never really set itself up for a sequel.

Also, I'd like to mention Eternal Darkness.

I'd again like to mention Eternal Darkness.

Now I'd like to ask for a moment of silence.

Star Wars: Republic Commando. Great game, everyone loved it, ended with a cliffhanger, still hasn't gotten a sequel.

Sigh... System Shock 2. She left us too soon, such a beauty she was. Yeah, we got to date her almost equally hot cousin with Bioshock, but it just wasn't the same.
