I was sitting round playing through Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, and it got me wondering about what games that should be re-made for current consoles? Should they not only have the textures redone, but should they also have their engines updated? Should the game receive some extra content?

Now about the consoles,
With Nintendo gearing up for the announcement of their new console currently codenamed Project Cafe (at the time of writing), they are obviously gotten all they can out of this generation of game consoles as in the way of where it can go. While im not going to speculate about what they'll have in store, i must ask, will Microsoft and Sony (unlikely with the latter due to the current state with the PSN) come out with a new console in response to nintendo's move? Will they improve there consoles with update in the hardware, or give it more features to increase accessibility. and when do you think they will start to announce their new consoles? (because to be honest, WE are most likely reaching the end of the current generation console. I dunno what do you reckon?

The little known Heavy Gear series would be a good start.

Along with VtM Bloodlines and Icewind Dale.

Vampire Bloodlines was probably the point where I realized that their were big things in store for the RPG Market. Ahead of it's time and beyond the curve; It was an experience I'll always look back on fondly. Also, the only game to ever make me Scream-quit. Looking back it, not so bad.

Icewind Dale 2 is probably the pinnacle of the Baldur's Gate age of RPG's. While less notorious; it does hold great water in being a very real, grounded story that brings in the elements of DnD in terms of part of the game being up the players imagination. Excellent fun and punishingly difficult in a good way.

Heavy Gear 2 was a good example of Mech-Warrior done right; there was a lot to love about it. The level of customizabiltiy was out there. There used to be online games with names like [H]v[J] 700 pnts, no locks. Which would mean you either play as a Hunter mech or a Jager mech with 700 points for your mech and no lock-on weaponry allowed. Interesting stuff.

To answer your first question:
GTA london, which is a very, VERY old game, would be awesome! Imagine going round running over chavs and everyone having a cockny accent! Also TES: Arena, The only TES thus far to let you explore all of tamriel instead of just one Province!

KotOR 1 and Jade Empire. I would love to see those on next gen engines, with updated combat mechanics and so forth. :p

I would have to go with a full 3D version of the Baldur's Gate games in one compilation. Perhaps with the Dragon Age game engine. Of course combat would need to be modified, but I bet graphics are advanced enough now to reproduce all that fine detail the art direction had put in the game.

Being old (~30) myself, games such as KOTOR and Jade Empire still have great graphics in comparison to the four shades of green the first game I played had.

Okage: Shadow King is my pick. Wonderful early ps2 game let down by poor graphics and limited capabilities in programming back in the day.

I agree with this man. Even though the game was released unfinished and had it's clunky fighting mechanics it was one of the singleplayer games I played most. Must have reinstalled that game 4 times on two different pc's and played out the story a number of times.

It was the first rpg that really gripped me and the storypart is just amazing with the seduction, intimidation and pursuasion feat. Wish they did that more in the new games. Shame the company who made vamp: bloodlines no longer excists.

Tales of the Abyss... >.> I want it on my xbox damnit!

Also, definitely Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. The only game where you can have an argument with a stop sign. and lose.

I will have to say Final Fantasy 7 with the voice cast from advent children (except for the one line Red XIII had, he sounded really strange). Square Enix have said that to remake FF 7 to make it look like FF 13 would take years and be very expensive because of the world map and the detail that would have to go into the towns. FF 13 was shit. Nobody wants FF 13-2. FF 14 was universally described as being shit. Now I square had taken the time they used for these pieces of crap to make an FF 7 remake they would make a fortune because of old fan boys like me!

Also I would love to see Devil may cry and devil may cry 3 re made. But now we are stuck with new emo Dante (HE IS NOT DANTE)!!!!!!!! why do you hate us capcom.

I remember when 4 shades of green was the height of graphical luxury lol.

I'm not sure they could pull Baldur's Gate off in 3D. I think it would lose an awful lot of the charm it had.

Funny you should mention that. The lead designer of Heavy Gear 2 was also the lead designer of Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries. Interesting bit of trivia since you made the connection between the two games.

Man, what game would I wanna see re-made...

Ah. Jak II. Loved the atmosphere in that game, loved a lot of the elements of the story, but... eeeeeeehh. Strictly average, terribly unfocused and wasteful. What I'd do is hand it off to Rocksteady, the guys who made Batman: Arkham Asylum. That's a group that could not only produce that atmosphere, but really bring that world to life and tighten the mechanics, making them more complex and engaging all at once.

Phantasy Star II. A revolutionary Sega Genesis RPG that... has not aged well in the least and is rightfully overshadowed by somewhat sturdier games of the time. Still, it comes as close to legitimate sci-fi as I've seen in an RPG, apart from the likes of Deus Ex. Again, though, the original developers aren't the ones I'd ask to do it as its mechanics would inevitably be derivative of the original ones, and you could come up with so much better stuff for that world and its themes than standard JRPG combat. SEGA has also proven they aren't terribly good with aesthetics lately, particularly where the PS games are concerned. Who would I give it to? ... Good question! Still thinking on that. But not SEGA.

I'd like a Hexen: Beyond Heretic revival. But only if they made the level design as insane as the original. And with coop. And the same amount of awesomeness.

In fact, bugger the remake, I can play the original :p

As always SMT 1/2 just to make them less archaic, give them a better map system and get rid of the mechanic where demons eat MAG just by being in the active party

I'd like to see a remake of Quest 64. Maybe with capable promotion, people will judge it on its actual merits the second time.

By the way Nintendo games are completely eliminated because they'll be re-made anyway.
