The title annoys me. It should be "Games that should have been more popular but weren't". I know it's a smal thing, but it's one of those small things that just irk you, y'know?

On topic: Ultimate Spider-man. I know that it has a pretty niche appeal, what with it being based on a line of comics, but I had a hell of a lot of fun with it. More people should have as well.

Lost Planet (and demos of it's sequel)
People are forever saying the controls are sluggish, whereas I see it as less twitchy and more precise to be honest. The VS suits are a joy to use and are given a wide array of weaponry, plus the constant search for thermal energy only ever becomes difficult on certain areas

Eternal Darkness. That's all that needs to be said really.
I hared there might be a sequel coming maybe. If not then i cry
I know that the creator said in an interview that the yellow magick in the game belongs to another god and hinted at a sequel... five years ago.

Sorry for the stupidly late reply.

Beyond good and evil (if it sold well, we'd have BGE2 by now damnit >< )
Sacrifice (don't think it ever got popular, i loved that game)
The X-Com series (there is a fanatical few, but it was never mainstream)

I'll throw in Dungeon Keeper too, even though it was kinda popular in it's time, until Bullfrog ate a bullet and nobody thought it was a good idea to make DK3 (what ? why ? that game was pure awesome!)

Freespace 2, Psychonauts, X-Com, Thief Series, MDK, Toonstruck, STALKER, Planescape Torment, Vampire the Masquerade:Bloodlines, and last but not least.

TERRA FRIGGIN NOVA.

If there is one thing that shows humanity is not friggin fit to live its that this game got bought by NO ONE.

MASSIVE 3D ENVIROMENTS WITH HUGE DRAW DISTANCES
DIFFERENT PLANETS
FRIENDLY AI YOU CAN ORDER AROUND
LAND AND AIR VEHICLES
JET FRIGGIN PACKS
STEALTH
LONG DECENT STORYLINE
LARGE SCALE BATTLES
MASSIVE VARIETY OF WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT

IN NINETEEN FRIGGIN NINETY FIVE. THATS 1995

Whats worse is that its not like some old classic that everyone is aware of like X-Com, this game was probably the most ahead of its time game ever and NO ONE has EVER heard of it. DAMN YOU WORLD.

System Shock 2 never got popular when it was first released. Even though it was the very first FPS with rpg elements in it.
It achieved cultstatus afterwards so it's all good
Did System Shock 1 not have RPG elements?

Shadowrun for the SNES was awesome.

Awesome game as well. The original should have been more popular. Released three months after Doom, it featured true 3D maps and objects, the ability to crouch, go prone and lean left and right.

Warlords Battlecry series ._. great rts/rpgs.

Impossible Creatures, amazing RTS.
Also a good series, easily one of the best fantasy RTS games ever.

Somebody has already said it but it damn well bears repeating.

Shadow Hearts and Shadow hearts: Covenant.

One of the few JRPG titles that dared to stand out and be different. Then got thrown to the wind like so many other JRPGs that didn't follow the Final Fantasy Formula.

Dungeon Keeper, goddamnit.

That game deserves a reboot ;o;
That game was supposed to have a sequel where you fight in the surface world..... It never saw the light of day(AH Pun!) as far as i know.

Nethack. I wasted hours on that. Yes, i know rouge-likes are very popular, but I mean this one specifically.

Also, I think Penumbra:Overture needs more love. It was honestly one of the scariest games I have ever seen. Also, it was pretty interesting and had some pretty neat puzzles.

A tragic waste of the IP. Would have been better served in a single-player RPG. I used to P&P Shadowrun back in the day.

Mirror's Edge. I still think it is a great game, and wasn't nearly as popular as it should be.

Yeah, I know. I don't know if I would have liked it if they did manage to break out into the surface world, but wreaking havoc on the overworld may have been entertaining.
I still say it deserves a reboot, and considering the graphical capabilities we have now compared to the 90's, it could be just as pretty as it is freaking awesome.

Mafia: City of Lost Heaven, World in Conflict, and Hearts of Iron II.

Yes, I know that none of these games were really "unknown" and had a pretty good devoted fanbase, but it could have been much bigger.

Many of those that came to mind have already been mentioned so I'll add Clive Barker's Undying. Great FPS horror game. They had PS2 ports and sequels planned but then it bombed even though critics loved it. Sigh.
