That game ended up on the greatest hits, is on multiple best games lists and people constantly mention it, pretty sure it's popular.

Earth Defense Force 2017 - Is a really fun multiplayer game, although pretty mindless.

Demon's Crest (snes) - I think this game ended up as a huge flop but it's pretty damn awesome.

Ico and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I never hear anyone talk about it or even mention it...
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. got relegated to the hardcore/special gaming category, primarily because it was a pretty hard PC FPS. Do those qualifications ring any bells? The System Shock series was released BEFORE console FPSs took off in a big way, and they were likewise relegated to the hardcore/special category. The same fate also befell almost all of NovaLogic's games, even though they produced some of the most popular PC FPSs of all time (Delta Force: Black Hawk Down and Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising).

Note however that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is probably the best-selling hardcore game series ever (slightly over a million copies) and is not really obscure. Sure, only PC gamers talk about it, but it's still somewhat popular.

Tachyon: The Fringe is a game that didn't sell well but was really good. A space sim brought to life in the era when flying simulations were on the decline, Tachyon had a frankly amazing story, voice acting to kill for, and some of the best graphics of its time. Despite these plus points, Novalogic's brainchild never really took off and settled for obscurity.

The Battlefield series, if only because of all the people who said "Wow! Check out this new Battlefield: Bad Company 2 game that came out of nowhere! It's so much better than Modern Warfare 2! Why did it take game companies so long to realize that gamers want a more realistic and complex shooter?"

The new Prince of Persia. I realize all the flaws in the game that everyone sees, but I really dont mind them. While not as good as the Sands of Time trilogy, I love the game none the less.

System Shock 2 never got popular when it was first released. Even though it was the very first FPS with rpg elements in it.
It achieved cultstatus afterwards so it's all good
Did System Shock 1 not have RPG elements?
*cringe*
lets say that "2" was a typo on my part =p
