Baldur's Gate series on the PC. When I finally started to pull away and get on with life, I found the mod community and was sucked back in.

When Blockbuster used to rent game systems they started renting a dreamcast for $25, one month before the actual release of the system, I rented it only to play Sonic Adventure and I beat before it came out. Then got a dreamcast and beat it again XD.
Same thing happened to me, but when Sonic Adventure 2 came out, chao raising invaded my thoughts for 4 years. Cute little soul-suckers -_-
Other notable games were the Myst series, Runescape, Orange box, Civ 4, and bioshock.

The most recent one of mine is GTA 4, or at least it would be if my brother hadn't stolen the 360, the one that had me the longest was Guitar Hero 3, I was completely addicted. In fact no, neither of those compare to how long I've been playing Pokemon, I picked up Pokemon Silver and went on to play and beat ALL of the games, except the spin-offs like puzzle league. I was nuts.

Diablo 2: Lord Of Destruction is destroying my social life at the moment. Good thing the first realistic release date of Diablo 3 is in the next decade at best.

I once wasted an entire summer on the original Grand Theft Auto. VC and SA consumed some as well. But the most time got lost on the Civilization series and Grand Prix II. It still happens.

Morrowind did, for a long time. I only took a short break to play Viewtiful Joe at one point, then after beating that game on the highest difficulty, I just had to go back to Vvardenfell again.

Fable on the Xbox sucked me in for about a month, then oblivion on the 360 sucked me in for another, and at the moment Im so addicted to dead Rising and GTA IV I could consider them alternate lives.

Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction owned years 11 and 12 as I saught the Grail and other high level achievements. Day of Defeat is still the only game that no matter what is out, I'll always go back to, has been for the last 7 years.

I was a WoW addict for a long time. Then i turned to LoTRO. The back to WoW then to LoTRO then i froze both accounts. If any mmorpg ever wins me back it's gonna be Warhammer. That or nothing.

Shock the Monkey.

I keep trying, but stupid ad windows keep popping every time making it very difficult.

lets see:
1. halo, which i still replay time and gain
2. oblivion(most of the said time was spent looking for mods to make the game more enjoyable)
3. morrowind(i was foolish enough not to have long blade as a major or minor skill, the first few days of hitting and missing with my longsword, were excruciatingly painful, oh and i had the atronach birthsign and once my mana run out, it took me quite some time to figure out that i need to use potions and was way into the game before i understood how important the temples were, or attacking your own ancestor ghost)
4. the two kotors, i played the whole spectrum on both the games...
5. the prince of persia series, especially second, which i think was as perfect as a hash and slash can be, note i haven't played god of war...
6. assassin's creed.
7. crysis, first on low detail and then on the very high... of course the second time around i hardly did anything story-related.
8. all the splinter cells... i just love sneaking around in the dark
9. counter strike, for a 3 year long period of my life, i remember only playing this accursed game...
10. the various call of duties....
