Saints Row 1.
I thought it was another GTA knockoff, but boy was I wrong. It got even better with Saints Row 2.

Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland. Actually all Kirby games. Honestly, I thought they were just simple, petty kids games. Yet when I finally played them, they turned out to be absolutely fantastic platformers and just plain fun. And don't even get me started on how damn adorable he is. Especially in Epic Yarn.

TimeSplitters 3 PS2:

I didn't have no expectations at all for this one, but it took me by surprise and fucking blew my balls away

Singularity. From what I had heard I was expecting the worst game ever, but It was easily the most fun I had all year.

Half Life 2 series

Thought it was just an fps with a half decent story. When I got it I was blown away by how good it was.

Dante's Inferno.

Everyone thought it would be shit, and many people said it [b/]was[/b] shit, but I really don't understand all the crap it get's. It was better then GoW 3.

Darksiders.

I bought it on a whim, regretting it when I walked out the store.
Decided to play it anyway, and experienced more fun then I expected!
Yeah a lot of people seem to think it's some GoW clone when it's more like a larger compilation of games. Very fun and very unique style.

The first Two Worlds. Everyone shit all over it so I played it to see what the fuss was about only to find that I didn't think it was that bad. I would not call it the finest game ever produced but it wasn't nearly the rancid tuna salad sandwich of the gaming world that people made it out to be. I actually had fun playing it.

God of War
I picked up the remastered version of the first two games when I bought a PS3. I didn't have high expectations but damn did I love the games. It turned out to be my top one game serie and I can play the third one over and over again without getting bored.

The Darkness
Same thing here; It was my first Xbox360 game and I didn't have any expectations. I loved the game from beginning 'til end(except for the zombie thingies during the WWI sequenses). Tried replaying it after two years recently however and didn't feel the same excitement like before.
The graphics went from awesome(my first next-gen game on a console, so I was really impressed) to bad and the gameplay felt clunky.
/sad

Mass Effect
A friend of mine told me that the game sucked, when it was released. I trusted him and ignored the game for a long time. Just a few months ago I saw both games for around 12 euro each and decided to buy them just for the long game time.
Damn was I impressed. Loved the first game so much. Second one was also really awesome, but I got a bit disapointed with the new Gears-of-War-clone-direction the game suddenly took.

Mass Effect - I'm not generally into RPGs and I've never even heard of bioware before I eventually decided to try it out.

Then it rocked my world. ME2 kinda did the opposite in that I was expecting epicness but only got decent.

The Bourne Conspiracy. A great example of how a movie/book based game doesn't have to suck!
It's actually not bad!
Oh and Crackdown. Expected a summer time-passer, It's now my favourite game for 360.

Two Worlds 2 is out?

OT: New Vegas.

What can I say? After leaving it to get patched first Obsidian have actually made something good.

I'll still punch any of their employees that I meet over KotOR 2 though.

Went into bioshock not expecting much. Suffice to say it took about 5 seconds for me to instantly fall in love due to the games kick ass opening.

Its out in europe. Also why do you hate Kotor 2? Its nowhere near as good as the first (which is in my top 5 games of all time) but why do you consider it that bad?

Because it's completely unfinished and bug-ridden.

And I know longer trust that it was all down to LucasArts (which they have essentially claimed in the past) since they seem to always blame someone else for their games.

I got Fire Emblem 11 as an impulse buy because that Marth guy from Super Smash Brothers was pretty cool.

I've now played 4 and 6 - 11 on their hardest difficulties and it's my favorite series ever.

Bayonetta SOOOOO much.

It's still my 2010 game of the year, and I got it on its release date, back in January.

The Hellsing-esque idea that I saw at face value always appealed to me when I was looking forward to it, but when I got it, I discovered a good, light-hearted game with beautiful graphics, fun combat, and epic sequences.

Not to mention that it turned me onto acid jazz, the music most prevalent in it.

mmmm its a good question.... i'll have to say kingdom hearts, i saw the box n thought disney was milking the old cash cow but fell in love with it, the gamplay and story were both (im my opinon)were solid. resident evil 4 is another one i expected it to be the same as 3 (so getting worse) but it was A LOT better than i expected. oldies perhaps but still good games. regarding newer games mmmmmm i'd say ufc 2010 i thought itd would be just a cheap spin off but its deep with a huge roster, good graphics n i like it.
