The game I would say would be Phoenix Wright. I found this during a sale for fifteen bucks. Probably the greatest fifteen bucks i ever spent. Who knew graphic/text adventures were fun?
Another game would be Pokemon Emerald. I havent played pokemon in years, so i didnt know what exactly to expect. What I got was my return to pokemon, hours of addictive fun and my new favorite pokemon, Gardevoir.
P.S. Gardevoir is awesome.

I was thinking about this before some more, and another one was Super Smash Brothers, the original game on the N64.
I literally had seen nothing of it that interested me and wasn't even really thinking about it's release, but a friend picked it up on the first day it came out and we got together to play it. I've never been much into fighters, but hey, we usually got a good run off the Nintendo mascots in games (we even like Mario Golf for a while, mostly for the taunts to be annoying). But ultimately, I was so pleasantly surprised by Super Smash Brothers, we logged literally hundreds of hours with each character on just his cartridge, and most of us wound up purchasing the game for ourselves as well.
Just didn't see that one coming at all. Most games I will really like I have an eye on months or sometimes years in advance.

D&D Heroes for the XBox.
It's essentially Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (which means it's essentially Baldur's Gate minus story and characters) but with up to 4 players. It's a perfect example of the phenomenon of crappy games that immediately become fantastic when you add co-op. By yourself, it's nothing special, but add some friends, and it was surprisingly addictive.

haha yea, i have exactly those 2 games here, pure for co-op, i have a friend who loves any game, as long as it has co-op, so we went to the local replay (dutch video game store) and grabbed like 5 games from the bargain bin that had co-op, then had a beer + gaming weekend, was a lot of fungoestoeleven said:

Fallout. Remember waaaaay back when, the first time you played Fallout and it was suprisingly good.

Conker: Live And Reloaded. A fun little twist of the whole, childrens Jax and Daxter type of gaming. As long as you beat that bastard race level... you're in for a great game. Suprisingly good multiplayer (although I didn't play online, playing with a friend and bots were fun).

LEGO Star Wars.
After seeing some of the kiddy games that use the LEGO license, and the crappy one that use the Star Wars license, I wasn't expecting much.
But man, that was FUN! I completed it 100% in a week, but it was still fun. Besides, I've played shorter games. The original Jak & Daxter I finished 100% (including getting the hidden powercell) in 2 days.

Another one that took me by suprise... Stubbs The Zombie. I went in thinking that it would destroy what a zombie was... it kinda did but that didn't kill the fun factor.
I'd have to go with The Darkness, great game if not for the game destroying bug with the harmonica sidequest.
I am still shocked by how much WarCraft 3 surprised me. Back then, when we had LAN sessions on the weekend, it was just another RTS at the beginning, but it grew over time, and after some weeks we just played WC3 from dusk till dawn. Later, when me and my friends moved out from home, we would still meet up on battle.net. And Frozen Throne expansion was really suprisingly good too, if you can acknowledge the sheer added multiplayer depth. I still play it to this day, it's the common denominator.
For me it was Call of Duty. From any of the reviews of it I had read I thought that it was going to be boring and no better than any of the older ones, also the idea of the modern setting made me think it was trying to be a BF2 clone.
However after reading some articles on Rock, Paper, Shotgun about the awesome cinematic moments I decided to check it out and absolutely fell in love with it.

John Woo presents Stranglehold was a pleasant surprise. I didn't think much of Assassins Creed when i bought it, but it was excellent too.
I think above all else though, Crackdown was a game i bought off someone on a whim and ended up putting hours into. Really enjoyable. Until my 360 deleted my character when it updated *shudder*

The biggest surprise for me has to be Mercenaries.
I got the game because of one of the main characters nationality...
The game started out okay, I overturned my jeep five seconds into it and had to hike to the first base.
Then it got cooler when I could control tanks and such...
Then I got a helicopter, and spent five hours shooting jeeps, other helicopters, grabbing jeeps with the winch. Trying to grab other helicopters with it too for that matter. Throwing jeeps at other helicopters...

Deathrow. I spent five dollars on it because I needed something to keep me occupied for a few hours and I had fully expected the game to suck more than a fat girl on prom night. Imagine my surprise when the game turned out to be fairly fun and capable of keeping my interest for much longer than anticipated.

Legaia dual saga with the aid of inf accessory code on a code breaker.
God the game was insanely fun with it on
DMC 2 with inf jump CB code, I limited myself to bouncing off walls and triple jumps.....it was just fun stuff.
Dungeon siege was awesome because of the one trick leveling scheme,I wish 2 kept it as a option....stupid devs do not understand options are everythign to making a game live longer....

I just mentioned this game in another thread, but the top one would be Ogre Battle. It was the first emulated SNES game I ever played, and I downloaded the ROM simply because the name intrigued me - then it turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time.
Also, Return to Castle Wolfenstein! Honestly I kind of expected it to be bad, but I figured I had to try it just to pay homage to the oldskool FPS games of my youth, and it was actually pretty fun. Multiplayer was a gas too, although the stock maps kind of sucked.
I should probably mention Beyond Good and Evil as well. Although I'd heard that it was good, I wasn't expecting it to be so clever and fun, and have such beautiful music and visual design.
