Flipping the coin, what games did you buy that was worth every penny.
Games you spend so much more time with than you had expected.
Surpricingly deep games or games you have played over and over multiple times.

I will start out.

Diablo2: The amount of hours I spend on bnet is silly when you think about how simple and repetetive this game is. The only game I played over 10 years (no not all the time silly), thousands of hours literally :)

Duke Nukem 3D: The best 3D shooter ever. Later shooters are much more advanced, but Duke is the king. Somehow I could never get into Counter Strike, but Unreal Tournament was fun (just to prove I am not only an old turd).

Baldurs Gate 2: The best Bioware game to date. Great plot, awesome isometric graphics, replayed this many times.

Warcraft3: A RTS with an interestng story line. On top of that all kind of nice online gaming and alot of Tower Defense maps which I am a sucker for.

Colin McRae Rally 4: Might be better rally games out there, but this is the one I liked most and played for many hours.

Descent 1: What a revolution this game was. Played it countless hours online.

Sim city: uhm ok now its getting silly and old, so I will stop here except one last amiga days game...

Supremacy: was it the music theme ?

These are all old games, but I do play new games all the time. Definately have my preferences in game styles as shows, but that doesn't mean they are the best, just the ones I liked most.

Anyways, list your favorites :)

Team Fortress 2.

Paid a grand total of $6 for it when it came bundled with the Orange Box. Play it almost every day.

I'm gonna be real original here and say Bioshock. The amount of time I have spent re-playing that game just for the story makes it totally worth the money I had to spend.

Now I will express my fanboyism and say Halo: Reach. With all the online matchmaking time I've logged, it has certainly made up for the $60.

Diablo 2 for sure. Even now I could fire it up and have heaps of fun. But would probably have to miss work tomorrow and I don't want to as its time for a new bike. Don't remember what I paid originally but collectors edition for $20 is pretty swell.

Rallisport Challenge 2 dumb name for a great game. Many hours of drunken challenges with friends. Don't think I paid more than $15 for that. Wish it worked on my 360.

Borderlands and Heroes of Might and Magic 3 paid $60 for each as I got them when they first came out. Kinda different games and time periods but both in my top 10 all time.

Personally...

Portal 2. In terms of sheer enjoyment this game is currently unmatched. There are other games that have a better value to dollar ratio, but truthfully I just didn't know i could smile that hard. Portal 2 taught me that I can. Just...brilliant.

Team Fortress 2. I'm humbled by the amount of time I've spent playing that game. When considering the pittance I spent on it it's easily the best value to dollar game I've ever played. If I knew going into a game I would play it and enjoy it as much as TF2 I wouldnt hesitate to spend a hundred or more dollars on it.

Counter Strike. While I have no interest in playing it now, this game pretty well defined my 18-23years of age. At that point I was working at a local LAN shop were counterstrike was the MOST SERIOUS of business. It was all I did and I loved it. This was 1.3- 1.6 era for reference.

Team Fortress 2. I got it as part of the Orange Box back in 2007. I bought it primarily to get Portal, but I found myself coming back to TF2 long after Portal got stale for me. I've been playing TF2 on a regular basis ever since, and I've sunk well over 1,000 hours into it.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and its expansions. This was a sheer impulse buy on my part, but it quickly turned into my all-time favorite RTS game. Not only that, but it introduced me to the awesome Warhammer 40k universe. I've been an avid fan of the setting ever since.

Morrowind. The first Elder Scrolls game I ever played, it was also my introduction to open-world RPGs. I can't tell you how many times I've stayed up far later than I should because I couldn't stop playing this game.

Halo: Combat Evolved. When my friend introduced me to this game back in 2002, I knew I had to get it. I've been a Halo fan ever since. It's still one of the best games in the series, and I still play it from time to time.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Hands-down the best installment in the plethora of Star Wars games out there since Tie Fighter. Hell, it's leagues better than any Star Wars movie made in the past fifteen years.

Most of the other worthwhile games I've kept around were given to me by friends or relatives when I was a kid, so they don't really qualify for this list.

Freespace 2.

I can't pay enough for that game.
You, Sir, Win. I must have beat this game at least twice and replayed parts of so many times... such an effing awesome game.

Also, I'm going to be kind of obvious here; Minecraft.

Galactic Civilizations II and expansions. I could play 1 game on the largest map setting and probably play more hours that dollars I paid for this game.

Settlers 2 gold, Settlers 6: Some Settlers versions are just better. Proves gameplay is everything.
Creeper World: Great simple indie game with alot of dept.
Dungeon Keeper 2: It's good to be bad.
GTA: Ok who here didn't drive around in the tank wrecking everything ? no no don't lie.
Gran Tourismo: Yes I played the 6 hour race on campaign mode.
Vipeout: What can you say.
Everquest, WoW: This could be a six pages run through of the basics, so I won't go there.
Might & Magic 4-7 + Heroes of MM: What can I say I like RP and strategy.

Keep em comming

Totally agree with you on that one, except i bought it as a stand alone for $10. Definently the best $10 i have spent on Steam. as for console games, i would have to give that one to Mass Effect 2.

Call of Duty 4. I spent a ton of time playing this game, and I still sometimes do!

Neverwinter Nights: I have spent, between the game and the sequel, SOLELY on multiplayer, THOUSANDS of hours playing over the past four years. YEek.

Halo Reach: The 360 game I play most at current. Just. Plain. Awesome.

Rift: At current, my favourite MMO. I don't even know what it is I love about it so much.
