Star Ocean: Till End of Time. Before that game I'd never even heard of the Star Ocean series, and I bought it completely on a whim because I happened to be in EB games buying a different game and the guy and the counter was like yeah the new Star Ocean game just came out, so I looked at it and thought "Eh, why not?" Glad I did too, because I loved that game.

Mass Effect is probably the best result I've ever got from a gamble. I remember passing it by on multiple occasions, before finally deciding to give it a try simply because it was going cheap at the time. Now I consider it (and its sequels) to be some of the greatest games I've ever played.

As for bad results, none can surpass buying Two Worlds for the Xbox 360. That game didn't work, even on a basic technical level. Actually, calling it a game is too generous, I think "slideshow" is a more appropriate term. I felt badly ripped off even despite the fact I paid only £5 for it.

Good gamble-
Timesplitter: Future Perfect. I just bought it with the knowledge that I love the sequel (I didn't read the reviews) and while it was just the same game with more content but I liked the new content. Also I think I bought it cheaply so it was a worth while purchase.
Prequel, you loved the prequel! Damn it... You got my hopes raised for just a second there, only to bring them crashing down straight away as I read the rest of your post. Don't toy with my emotions like that!

Men Of War: Red Tide, or whatever the title is. It sounded too good, suspiciously close to my
idea of a cool RTS/shooter blend, and sure enough neither elements were any good for me.

Oh well, it didn't cost too much so I don't care really.

Most of my Steam sale buys are gambles, hence why I buy them during a Steam Sale.

I would have to say Borderlands is my biggest gamble. It really is a FPS/Diablo style looter, something I didn't think would work but it does.

Tiny and Big: Grandpa's leftovers.

Needless to say, it had a major problem which I didn't expect it to have.
It didn't work.
My graphics card apparently wasn't good enough.
Although, since I have 2, I suspect it was reading the wrong one. (I can play Metro 2033 on high)

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

The only reason I got it was because I played as Ike and Marth quite a bit in Super Smash Bros Brawl and wanted to see what one of their games was like.

Needless to say, it was worth it.

Good Gamble: Lego Batman 2. I'd never played a Lego game before, and this one was pleasantly surprising.

Bad Gamble: Dragonball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi. Granted, it makes for a rather exciting game of rock paper scissors, but doesn't really hold up as a fun anime fighting game. Traded it in for Raging Blast 2, which I'm much happier with.

Good Gambles; Rocket Knight Adventures (still my favourite platformer), NiGHTS into Dreams, Battle Isle 3, Giants Citizen Kabuto, Messiah.

Bad Gambles; Corporation (shitty ass FPS on the Megadrive), Outcast, Shadow of the Beast 2.

Good gambles: Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3, Deus Ex: HR, Lego: Star Wars

Currently gambling: Borderlands & Red Faction: Guerrilla (just bought via Steam summer sale)

Bad gambles: Brink, Homefront, Mass Effect 3 (never been trolled so hard before...), Crysis 2, I bought it for xbox (1st mistake), then I beat it and was so confused I had to wikipedia the entire story to understand what hell was going on.

Games I took a gamble on?

All my gameboy advance and lower games. All my NES games. All my N64 games. All my PS1 games. Some of my Gamecube games.

Since I got internet though:
Tales of Vesperia. (Awesome game. Didn't get to play it enough.)
The Witcher. (Awesome idea, still flawed, but didn't regret it.)
Final Fantasy 10. (Not my game...it was good but I just didn't like it.)
Guild Wars. (Lost interest too quickly.)

Probably more but I can't think of others atm.

I bought Kingdom Hearts after seeing the trailer, and it turned out to be a decent buy. I also bought Deus Ex: Human Revolution on a whim, with no reviews or nothing. That, too, turned up to be a good deal.
Other such games include Tomba 2, Vagrant Story and Alpha Protocol.

Bad buys... Well, those are few and far between, but there are a couple of titles I grabbed on a moment's notice. The most recent one would be Operation: Raccoon City. The PlayStation Store had it at a 4.85 or something, and even though I know not to trust these numbers I still went on ahead and bought the damn thing. Worst money I've spent in a while, at least for now. I still might get into it later, and find out it's a decent title after the awful first mission.

Septerra Core, Psi-Ops, Dynasty Warriors 2, The Club, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Jet Set Radio Future, Mass Effect (it was brand new, no one I knew had played it, and I had no net).

Mass Effect here to, knew nothing about it, turned out to be one of my all time favorites, also Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (I was into vampires back then reading anne Rice and all that) bought it fell in love with the games, the lore, the characters.

Much respect to anyone who ever seriously stepped onto the Dance Dance Revolution pad. Even if you failed out and never played again, you took the chance. Hail!

Best Gamble:
Anomaly Warzone Earth - Who knew playing the opposite end of a tower defense game would be just as fun.
Rock of Ages

Good Gamble:
Puzzle Dimension
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
Dustforce

Bad Gamble:
Nexuiz
Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals - I was misled by a certain review to believe that this was not your average point and click adventure game.
Killing Floor

Worst Gamble:
Alpha Protocol - I knew going in that this was bad but was swayed just for once by the vocal minority. I regret ever listening.
