games to get me into turn based strategy?

I've been trying to get into strategy games for years by playing a variety of RTS games (Company of Heroes, Dawn of War etc) but none of them really appeal to me that much. But recently I bought Civilization 5 during the Steam sales and had a blast playing through a successful conquest game. Which got me thinking, maybe turn-based strategy is more my thing?

So I'm looking for recommendations for military, or partially military focused, turn based strategy games that are more complex than Civ 5 but not quite at Hearts of Iron or Crusader Kings level (keeping in mind I've already played Xcom). Something that I could use as a stepping-stone to those games.

Any of the Total War games if you haven't played them yet? And maybe some of the earlier Civilization games, as Civ V seems to get inexplicably good reviews...

I'd humbly suggest Galactic Civilizations 2. I've spent many a "one more turn" night on this time sink. The play is deep, and the customization options are near limitless. And, if you watch on Steam, it'll go on sale every once in awhile.

The Total War games use RTS combat, don't they? I actually tried playing Napoleon and couldn't get past the tutorial battle (I'm *really* not good with RTS combat).

I think X-Com qualifies as Turn Based Strategy. Also I have to plug Elemental: Fallen Enchantress. Very cool fantasy turn based Strategy.

Then you have Heroes of Might and Magic. There's a bunch of games in the series... I'd recommend Heroes 5 for a modern game, and 3 if you want a more retro, but still incredibly awesome game. Stay away from the others, I haven't played 6 yet, so I can't weigh in on that one.

Then you have Age of Wonder: Shadow Magic. I can't emphasize how awesome this 4x Fantasy game is. Very very fun, and I think it really holds up well graphically. You'll sink a LOT of time into this one just starting new games with new factions to see how they work.

Also I'll echo Galactic Civilizations 2. If I had to be trapped on a desert island forever with only one game, it'd probably be that one. Its replay value is pretty much infinite.

I'd heavily suggest Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It's a little dated, but at least it's cheap to get, and it's still one of my favorites. Other than that, if you're not into the whole fantasy genre, Master of Orion 2 is still a heavy hitter. Older as well, but kickass still.

The battles are real-time combat but the management & strategy side of things is turn based. I'd recommend Rome Total War as it's cheap, will run on any hardware, and is quite easy to get a hang of, especially if you know what a flanking movement is.

Anyway, as I said before, Civ IV & Civ III are well worth a look if you're going for something that is pure turn-based.

Master of Orion 2 was the one that got me into TBS games, and the only one that I can still play regularly. I've tried Galciv and the like but they just don't have the same lustre. It's simple enough to get into with decent in-game descriptions of things, and is well paced. The combat is also loads of fun (and if you don't like it, you can always auto resolve)

Not all that complex combat but: Heroes of might and magic 3

As for the total war games there is always the option to let the computer do the battles for you if you only enjoy the city management part of the game(s).

They do. The Total War games are not turn based strategy. There is a TBS overlay mode, but it tends to be fairly rudimentary. The meat is the RTS combat. Notably, Crusader Kings is also technically a RTS.

XCOM, although very different from Civilization, would be an obvious starting point if you were looking for a modern TBS. It also has the military flavor you're looking for.

Galactic Civilizations 2 or Endless Space are relatively solid 4X games, which are also turn based. MOO2 is still the undisputed heavyweight champion of this sub genre, but it is starting to feel its age.

If you enjoy the tactical shooting of a game like XCOM, you might also enjoy Jagged Alliance 2 (also aging), or the original XCOM (extremely aged). Both are classics and amongst the best strategy games ever made. Avoid the modern JA remake, it's dreadful.

As you enjoyed Civilization, you might like Alpha Centauri, which is basically sci-fi Civilization. It's a very good game, but also a little long in the tooth (noticing a trend here yet?)

Heroes of Might and Magic is a solid series, although earlier entries (2 and 3 in particular) are easily the best it had to offer. King's Bounty fuses the turn based combat with an ultra-lite RPG overlay.

Frozen Synapse is a newer game (that looks like an older game) that is technically phased real time but has many of the same game play elements that make TBS appealing.

Games like Panzer General and Fantasy General were "war gaming lite", combining simple, intuitive UI with a fairly stiff challenge to make for a popular series of TBS games back in the day. You can probably find them as abandonware, or for cheap off a site like GOG. As wargames are notoriously ugly anyway, their advanced age doesn't really hold them back too much.

Alas, turn based strategy has been an under-serviced genre the last decade or so, and most of the essential titles are really showing their age. Some like, the original XCOM, are coming up on 20 years old. Fortunately, TBS games tend to age like fine wine. A few might have interface quirks, but most of them maintain the charm and quality that made them popular. JA2, for example, is still eminently playable, and as excellent today as it was at release. Moreso, even, thanks to the fantastic 1.13 mod.

For a more fantasy based angle give the Shining Force series a shot. Shining Force 1 and 2 were among my favorite games from the old Sega Genesis. Combined fantasy RPG elements with nice battle system.

Should be easy enough to get to try them one way or another

Not military-themed but you can't have a turn-based gaming thread without throwing in the Disgaea games. It's more alone the lines of strategy role-playing game but it's turn-based, it's also fun and the games have a decent sense of humor to them.

Super Robot Taisen Original Generation, especially if you're into giant robots. Characters and story are amazing, fighting animations are brilliant, possibly my favourite game ever. It's on GBA unfortunately, so you may have to use an emulator. Still, worth it.

I came into this thread hoping I could recommend Fire Emblem, but it looks likes that's not the kind of strategy game you are looking for. =(
It's awesome, mind you.

I'd suggest Galactic Civilizions 2. It plays a bit like Civ (top-down, turn based strategy empire building, but in space) and it's much deeper. Sounds like you'd enjoy it.

Well, it's not very complex, but I would recommend checking out Battle For Wesnoth. I think it's a great game and it's free so it's not like you'll lose anything if you don't like it.

The Total War games are also great.

I would have to throw my weight behind Master of Orion 2. Still ranks as the most immersive TBS game I have played, simple enough to just dive into but with enough depth that you can really micromanage if thats your thing.

I'd recommend Pokemon. It's really newbie friendly and it's still my favorite turn based game...
