games to get me into turn based strategy?

I rather like Eador Genesis at the moment. Also playing quite a bit of Solium Infernum. However I'm not sure either of those games would really be good to get you into the genre.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 or Age of Wonders : Shadow Magic are probably the better options. Heroes is especially easy to understand and play but has lots of nuances in it and the single player campaign is rather good.

The game that got me into this genre is Advance Wars for the Gameboy Advance. Don't let the fact that it's a Gameboy Advance game or its cartoonish style fool you - It's a great game.

Other than that, XCOM: Enemy Unknown (AKA the new one) is a great game (possibly the best) in the genre.

I'd heavily suggest Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It's a little dated, but at least it's cheap to get, and it's still one of my favorites.

This. This, right here. Even today, it's a marvelous piece of gaming, well-worth it. And at the prices you're likely looking at today, it's a steal.
