Yea, Me and my friend got into in arguement about this. He thinks that the way that Black Ops tells the story through flashback is original and unique, and I swear ive played other games that used the method but I cant remember names. Any Suggestions?

Call of duty 4 it had a flashback mission to explain how Price knows that guy that you hit with the 50 cal. (I can't remember his name and I don't feel like googling it).

^ It's 'Zakhaev'. Also, the flashback thing has never been original. And Price wasn't being held hostage at the time.

Yea I know but do you have any names of games that use it during the whole game?

Witcher 2 - fits perfectly
DA2 - comfortable prison for the guy with the gun, but he's being held to tell the story
MGS series (I think?)
Black Ops
CoD4

looooads of TV shows. I bet you anything that there's a tvtrope for it. You find that, and you're flooded with examples.

Through the whole game? none off the top of my head asides from BO Why? because it would be shit and it was.

Hitman: Contracts had something very similar, basically bleeding in some hotel room, remembering previously done missions. Or the entire first Max Payne is a flashback (sometimes with flashbacks inside the flashback). Or even Assassin's Creed, desmond basically lives through the flashbacks of his ancestors. Don't know many games where the main character is held hostage though.

Is there any game that you are held hostage the whole time then escape at the end omitting black ops?

Alpha Protocol -at least until the last mission- happens in retrospect as you talk to the guy you've been trying to take down the whole game (avoiding spoilers)

Same idea as Black Ops, really

Assassin's Creed (the first) mostly qualifies, I think. Desmond is held hostage by Abstergo and has to live through the memories (flashbacks are made of these, right?) of his ancestors.

That's the entire premise of Dragon Age 2. Varric is telling the story of Hawke while being held by that Seeker.

Dragon Age 2, Black Ops, and... umm. Well the Witcher 2 prologue, but that only lasts round an hour or so in a 20+ hour game so not sure if that would count.

The whole of Abe's Oddysee is a flashback.

When he's giving the Rupture Farms intro he's hanging over a meat grinder.

Didn't Black do that? Although I don't think the guy was being held hostage.
He was incarcerated, not taken hostage.

Rest fits, though.
