Team Fortress 2 does this alot..

When you die of what could not be described as natural causes, it implements a system that is known as a "killcam".. This short narrative does not use language to tell its story, but rather shows flashbacks of how your previous life ended in miserable manners by the hands of the enemy.

This flashback is often used to shorten the wait between your resurrection as a result of trying to fill the gap of time it takes to bring you back to life..

Yea, Me and my friend got into in arguement about this. He thinks that the way that Black Ops tells the story through flashback is original and unique, and I swear ive played other games that used the method but I cant remember names. Any Suggestions?

Come to think of it, couldn't all games just a series of flashbacks?
Just because there not being told as one doesn't mean they aren't.
Really flimsy and stupid point, but then sometimes those work against stupid arguments :p

Yeah, it sort of counts, considering how the the protagonist isn't alive, and throughout the whole game youre basically going through Cheryl's childhood and teenage years.

Monkey Island 2. Guybrush may not be held hostage, but hes hanging in a vine over a big hole and tells the story up till that point to Elaine.

Heh I forgot about that.
Also (without the hostage bit) FFX for a lot of it. It starts at the campfire with the whole "listen to our story" thing and goes through all the events up to that point.

A good bit of advice to avoid these particular situations: never call anything "original" or "unique" or "groundbreaking" unless you've seen every movie, played every video game, read every book, and seen every episode of every TV show that has ever existed. Someone can and will call you out on it, and if they don't, it means that whatever it is that got ripped off was so obscure and meaningless that no one cares about it anymore.

It is perfectly fine, though, to call something a ripoff if you can recall several previous examples of the same sort of thing happening in another VG, movie, TV show, book, etc...

Didn't Black do that? Although I don't think the guy was being held hostage.
Yeah, it did. And he wasn't held hostage, but more...somewhat against his wish, but had the ability to leave. Or something along those lines. I haven't played that game in years. God, it rocked.

Plenty of things are told in flashbacks - less that are THAT specific, but to say its original is stupid.

Does no one remember that Black Ops was released BEFORE Dragon Age 2? The argument still stands for the other games, but it's almost silly how many mention DA2..

Abe's odyssey.

Game starts with Abe a prisoner of the main bad guy, awaiting execution.

The rest of the game is him travelling towards that end while freeing his people.

The end result, execution or freedom, depends on how well the player frees his people.

Is there any game that you are held hostage the whole time then escape at the end omitting black ops?
Alpha Protocol, in a manner of speaking. all the missions are being recalled for a dude, save the last one.
