[HEADING=3]The kind of "huh" where you sort of stop for a second and realize it's raining.[/HEADING]
It could probably be the first time you ever noticed the effect. I remember playing through Pokemon: Sapphire and hitting the route with the weather station. The effects were a pretty big step up from what I had encountered in Crystal. The rain really pulled the environment together, and it wasn't a one-trick weather effect, either; as I kept walking, I came across puddles I could run through (with a pleasing splish-splash effect). Most delightful of all, I saw my reflection in all the puddles! Some genius had even thought to add slowly drifting clouds whose shadows covered the grass and whose reflections adorned the puddles when they passed by. It was all very relaxing.

Anyway, I like rain. So what's a game you've played before that boasted some really pleasing rain effects?

I was playing World of Warcraft not long ago. I play on a role play realm and was in the middle of an event... then it just rained and everyone reacted differently and for a second I just stood there and had to think of how my Elf would respond to rain. It changed the flow of the role play and until that point I don't think I'd ever noticed it.

Sleeping Dogs has without a doubt the best rain effects I've ever seen in a video game. Every time it rains in that game, it makes the entire city look absolutely gorgeous.

Unfortunately I seem to get stuck with shitty Rockstar rain effects. They've been on my sights since GTA III all the way to Red Dead Redemption.

Recently it was Drangleic castle in Dark Souls 2. It starts out rather silly given that it's just suddenly night time and raining when you exit a short tunnel from an area where it was day and at best overcast. If you ignore that, however, it just really sets the mood perfectly. The effect itself is also taken a step further when you realize that while in the rain and for a short time after your character is considered "wet" and thus has a buff against fire damage but a debuff against lightning damage.

I remember the first time a rainstorm came by while I was roaming the forests of Cyrodiil. Oblivion may have some pretty terrible NPC animations, but it's environments can be really stunning at times. When a storm hits, and it's night time, and the wind is blowing the tops of the trees back and forth in front of the clouds, and the sound of the rain patters on my ears... It's a sublime experience. In a way, it's even better than a real storm, because you can stand in the middle of it without getting wet and cold.

Yes this. The rain effects in Sleeping Dogs are fucking gorgeous. Especially at night.

I never considered playing Sleeping Dogs since I'm usually wary of the open-ended games and their "activities." Looks like they really went all-out with the neon and other lighting effects. Now I wanna play the game just for those reflections!

I remember about awhile back I had been playing The Secret World on a shitty laptop at low settings (and dx9), and then I got my new computer and played it at high settings/dx11 for the first time, and goddamn is it a night and day difference. At high settings, the game's actually gorgeous (really lovely art design, but also pretty great graphics). I stared for a full minute at raindrops bouncing off a tiny puddle on a slab of rock. Lovecraft-inspired northeastern America never looked so good!

...sometimes I really miss that game

Believe me it is worth it. When you are driving through the city at night during a rainstorm, and all the city lights are reflected as you speed past, it's astonishingly beautiful. Sleeping Dogs has the best and most atmospheric city of any game in the genre.

Also it doesn't go crazy on the "activities" (I know exactly what you mean). The game is more of a focused narrative experience.

I also liked the rain in Pokemon Sapphire. They just went through so much effort to have different forms of water, and I greatly appreciated it as someone who also loves the rain.

Final Fantasy XIV also made me think about the rain, simply because you'll actually appear wet if you stand in it. Your clothes darken and get a bit shinier, and same with your hair. Between that and the fact that if you perform the /sit emote while on or in front of a chair you ACTUALLY SIT IN THE CHAIR, I was blown away by the details they put in that game.

The rainy areas of the Ichor Military Base from Jet Force Gemini. It was probably one of my first rain effects, and it gave the entire area a really foreboding and dark atmosphere. Really made things intense once bullets and rockets came from all directions while also avoiding sniper fire. Fun times~ Epic music too

I'd say the rain in Xenoblade Chronicles. If only because I find it astonishing that Monolithsoft managed to fit such a massive world on the Wii, and then have some pretty good looking dynamic weather systems on top of that.

I also liked Chapter 10 of Fire Emblem Awakening (though I haven't finished it yet, so I'm not sure if there's a more effective rainy chapter later on).

And yes, there's the arbitrary mention of Sleeping Dogs, but god damn if it doesn't look absolutely fantastic in the rain.

Sleeping Dogs definitely had some nice rain effects, but more recently my favorite has been the tropical storms in Assassin's Creed IV. The way the sky turns dark and the wind picks up is absolutely gorgeous. And the twisters and waves that show up when you're out at sea make any ship battle ten times more awesome.

Can't really have a thread about great rain effects without mentioning Heavy Rain. Despite how old that game is getting it still delivers some impressive graphics in general and really gorgeous rain. But what else is to be expected when it is in the title?

Did anyone else think the silver haired character in the screenshots was Kakashi from Naruto...even for a second?

Hmm, relying on my terrible memory the first time I actively noticed rain was probably in Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex. It wasn't particularly amazing by today's standards nor was younger me that impressed for whatever reason like you're asking, but it was memorable because I enjoyed the game for what it was and it was the only level you played as Coco who was pretty cool to play as I believe.

I thought the rain in the Batman: Arkham City Hugo Strange trailer looked pretty good though it's not in-game obviously and I don't think it ever rained during the main game anyway.

The Last of Us could look really beautiful sometimes, but I don't particularly remember the rain. Though, that may be because I played it at a friend's as I don't own a PS3, so I only remember some of it. Games are more memorable as a whole when you actually own them. Anyway, I do know that AFTER rain, the environment tended to be pretty damn pleasing I believe (Again, terrible memory).

Also, this:

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Lots of other games I like do the 'rain lands on camera' effect, but this one is probably the 'heaviest' and most oppressive feeling rainfall I've seen. That's probably why it was restricted to atmosphere-making for all of two spots in the game, the second being the final dungeon and accompanied by thunder effects when you're inside. You can easily imagine how hard its coming down while you're in there.

Infamous Second Son:

Since everyone was talking about rain. I nearly had to stop playing the game because when the game started raining, it sounded so real. The way the rain hit the metal of the cars, the sound of it tinging and pinging. I was like, I cannot tell the difference between reality and fiction any more.

Thinking about it, there are probably a lot of games I've played where it has been raining, but having trouble remembering many of them. One that does come to mind though is more down to the circumstances the rain happened in more than the effect itself.

It was in the original Planetside, and it was myself and another 9 people who were group together and we found ourselves trying to defend one of our bases as best we could from a heavy onslaught from one of the enemy factions. That was dramatic enough in it's own right, but then a very intense storm drew in, with all the lightning, thunder, and rainy goodness that brought with it.

The combination of the intense storm and the fact that we were hopelessly outgunned gave the whole thing a suitable "last stand" feel.
