I am utterly dissipointed at not a single mention of any Shotgun from Resident Evil.

Specifically Resident Evil 2's upgraded shotgun:

Soldier of Fortune 1 & 2 remain my benchmarks for awesome shotguns
Oh yeah! Beat me to it. Those shotguns were so brutal that I was actually too squeamish to use them back when I was in middle school. No game made me sympathize with the guys I was shooting like Soldier of Fortune.

Now that you mention it, there's also the shotguns from RE4. Thanks to the camera angle, you'd have enemy chunks flying in your face every time you fired off a shot from one of those. Bonus points if it was a headshot.

Wolfenstein (New Order)
Unreal Tournament (if you count the flak cannon)
Doom
Titanfall (2 is the one I've played), though there's 2 shotguns (3 if you count the shotgun pistol) and I'm not sure I've ever used the second one.
Shadow Warrior's is pretty good, though the enemies in general in it are a bit spongey. Once you get their health down they get ripped apart by the quad-barrel though.

Feel's Awesome: Parasite Eve 2, when you get the drum fed semi auto and the solid slug ammo. Holy SHIT that sound and kick are heart warming

Sucks: Aliens Trilogy. Very very underwhelming.

Resident Evil always has killer shotguns. Resi 4 even has three of 'm. The Last of Us also has a terrific shotgun.

One of the worst; The Uncharted games. With almost each one it feels like you're blasting confetti.

I'm not sure I have a favorite video game shotgun... but I absolutely do have a least favorite.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's AA-12. In MW2 the AA-12 was a pretty decent automatic shotgun that you could carry as a secondary weapon, balanced by its atrocious starting ammunition pool and tendency to chew through it very quickly. In MW3 though they made it a primary weapon and gave it roughly the same stopping power as those little air puffer machines used during an eye exam - while keeping the atrocious ammunition pool. In MW3 the AA-12 is a trolling weapon, and nothing else. Back when I played MW3 a lot I completed all of the weapon attachment challenges and the 2500 kills challenges, and the AA-12 was easily the worst of the primary weapons for me. Even with the Range proficiency it feels like you're generally better off just using the knife or harsh language.

I'm just going to go on record here as stating that I pretty much HATE almost 90% of video game shotguns because their range is way too damned short. Call of Duty in general is pretty bad about this, which means that I pretty much never use shotguns in ANY of the Modern Warfare games.

I have to say that I rather liked the shotguns in the first Mass Effect, even if some people here are saying that they felt weak. Well, all the guns in that game lacked punch, or at least didn't feel as powerful as they maybe should have. But the shotguns, especially the higher end models, were actually capable of holding their own out to medium range. I also like the shotguns in Mass Effect 3, where my most used one was actually the Asari Disciple for its light weight and rather tight pellet spread. ME2 shotguns, outside of the Geth Plasma Shotgun, were pretty much all garbage.

Also, there were the two shotguns in Transformers: War for Cybertron, the EMP Shotgun and the Scatter Blaster. The latter was a bit weak, but it at least had decent range to it. The former was just brutal, even if its accuracy wasn't quite as good. Then Fall of Cybertron came along and removed everything good about the Scatter Blaster and taking the EMP Shotgun completely away, which royally sucked.

Yeah, I think that shows you how I judge shotguns: not so much on raw power, but rather on how much spread they have.

I loved the shotgun in Metal Gear Online (MGS4's online). It did take 3 hits usually to kill someone but it was balanced among all the guns. The great thing about the shotgun was that it flinched the opponent within the shotgun's range or knocked them flat down if really close. Now, it didn't quite stun lock someone as you always had a chance to retaliate even if knocked down. It did actually take great skill to shotgun in MGO because you could just stand there and fire 3 shots, you had to keep moving even if it just was crouching or leaning between shots to avoid getting headshotted back. The shotgun was probably the weakest primary overall (depending on the map) and players would quite often disable it in game rooms, that's how satisfying it was, the weakest gun yet disabled in most rooms.

If shotguns in games actually performed like their real world counterparts, they'd be so overpowered considering the size of maps in most games. Literally everyone would use shotguns in COD then. I think across the board, automatics do need more recoil in games so that shotguns and sniper rifles are more effective.

All the shotguns in Max Payne feel tremendous (and it's great to watch the shot catapult people across the room), however my favourite is the double barrelled shotgun in Stalker: Call of Pripyat. It's one of the first guns you can acquire and quickly becomes outclassed, but I insist on upgrading it and taking it everywhere in the zone, right up to the end.

Also I like a special mention to go to the double rifle in FarCry 4; alright its not a shotgun, but it looks like one and it's amazingly rare to see a double rifle crop up in a game.

Yeah I was a Disciple man, especially when playing a Vanguard since I think it had a good balance of damage/shot capacity prior to reload. Stick an extended barrel and a shredder on that sucker and shit would just fucking die.

Also, it isn't strictly a shotgun but the M-357 Talon, though a pistol, hit like one and even sounded like one. So much fun.

I actually like the shotguns in fallout 3 and new vegas. Watching enemies gib is fun. The shotgun in bioshock infinite was awesome I tried to use that thing throughout my whole play through I regret getting the reduced spread though it cleared rooms way better before.

It kinda does. I don't have the original wad files so I'm using some freedoom ones and the gore effects doesn't seem to work with those :/
