The Marathon series [http://marathon.bungie.org/story/] has an incredible narrative.

If only it had more relation to the fun but admittedly average gameplay.

No one ever said Planescape: Torment had stellar game-play, although it is functional and true to the rule-set it came from. It can't be helped that people are jelly headed nincompoops that can't comprehend Thac0. That said, there are only a few occasions that combat is even necessary.

mafia II

I couldn't really tell you why because the story wasn't ground breaking but I did enjoy it, I have to be honest my mum used to sit and watch just for the story (and laugh at my driving).

LA Noire

I quite enjoyed the game even though there were a lot of flaws, story made me play to the end though.

That would be persona 3 albeit the gameplay was actually rather good but it's a LONG game and the gameplay part gets repetetive eventually.

I'm surprised nobody has said any of the Silent Hill games yet, because that was the first thing that came to my mind.

Please, if I don't enjoy the gameplay there's not a very good chance I'm even going to give a damn about the story.(not that I pay too much attention to the story in most games anyway)

Flower, Sun, and Rain (or any of Suda51's games really) really interesting weird story with crazy characters and good humour, but the gameplay is a chore. I still have played through it quite a few times and still get a kick out of it but holy crap the running around can get tedious.

Red Dead Redemption falls into the category of good gameplay with an amazing story.

Silent Hill is one where the gameplay is clumsy at best but it fits with the atmosphere which then in turn helps the story.

Mortal Kombat (2011) I'm not big on fighting games and I realize MKs story isn't much but it's still what got me through that game.

Anyways, Mass Effect. The gameplay (for me) was simply boring. Shoot, take cover, pop up, shoot, move on, rinse, repeat. Over and over again.

I kept playing because I wanted to find out where the story went. Though I haven't played the third one . After hearing about the ending debacle, I doubt I want to.
thats a shame...think its still worth playing

that was the case with the first game..but second game onwards (espeically third) I fount the gameplay to be a blast

hmm... i guess anything that has a decent story, because i usually try to immerse my self in the story, as opposed to the gameplay

Planescape Torment is the one that most springs to mind, the gameplay is average at best, and very dull. The story and setting however were awesome, its just a shame that the gameplay really dragged it down for me, it's one of those games I both love and despise at the same time. Maybe if I were actually into D&D it would not be so bad, but I guess thats the price you pay for those old CRPGs.

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines also deserves a mention, great story, characters and dialogue.. gameplay was very hit and miss and did get very repetitive towards the end. The lack of polish to it did not do it any favors either.

Lastly, someone mentioned Persona before, but I'm the exact opposite with Persona, I almost hate the stories (especially 3, which was just a drag right up until the end), but the gameplay keep me interested, it only they cut out all that bullshit at the start which holds up the game for a good 3 hours before you actually start doing more than pressing X rapidly... but Digital Devil Saga, loved the story and setting, thought it was awesome, did not really enjoy the gameplay, compared to other Shin Megami games, I found it lacking, and was one of the few games I was begging for a cutscene every 10 minutes.

I would say play it just turn it off when you reach the child and you will have had an awesome experience.

Dragon Age: Origins. It took me over a year (playing in patches) to complete my first play-through because the gameplay was so dull. But I kept going back to it because I thought the story was pretty alright (for a video game) and I was interested to see where it went next.
