The first game that I've made money in was Red Alert. As I watched my Ore Truck dump the gold into the refinery and watched the money counter tick up, I felt like I was accomplishing something worthwhile in a game for once. I had to carefully manage my power levels, navigate my ridiculous amount of tanks, and exploit the grenade glitch. But fighting over ore and gem patches were the most tense part about the game. Claiming the last patch in the game was the difference between life and death in Red Alert.
However, in modern games, you make a ridiculous amount of money. In Sandbox games especially, money practically falls from the sky considering how easily obtainable it is. In Assassin's Creed 2, my villa started to make stupid amounts of money and once I got all the upgrades, I just ran around, throwing money everywhere and then poisoning the first unlucky bastard to get to the pile. In essence, I was sort of like a psychotic Robin Hood.
In Mercenaries 2, you find money in big piles practically on the side of the road. Not to mention abusing the winch challenge. I made millionare within the first 10 minutes of the game.
In RPGs, it's not so different. Selling loot and examining loot was probably one of the least appealing aspects of RPGs in my opinion. The crowning one for me was Fallout 3, where practically every raider that had a gun was worth 30-100 caps. By the end game, I could buy out the entire inventories of towns if I wanted to.
What game did you make the most money in?

Yeha... I spent the entire Fallout 3 game poor... i dont think i actually sold a weapon... like ever...

Either Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas where i made a few billion dollars by betting in the casinos, or one of the Final Fantasies... maybe 7, that damn golden saucer.

Capitalism II. I just let it run for awhile after I'd gained an impenetrable monopoly in every item in the game and my character ended up a trillionaire.

Assassin's Creed 2 by far. Never have I had so much money in a game and so little to spend it on.

EDIT: And Pokemon. I had completely forgotten that money was even in that game because it was never an issue!

Oblivion all the way. Eventually I just didn't sell anything and had daedric armor and weaponry and unique items laying all over the houses I bought. I think I ended up having 100k or 200k worth of stuff hanging around my houses that I couldn't be arsed selling. You can have even more with the infinite cash glitch in the "cure for vampirism" mission.

In Fallout 3 I had a bit but that was because I didn't sell weapons. I kept them spare in case I needed to do some repairs between missions. My fridge in Megaton had 2 of every weapon fully repaired and many many unique weapons. The idea of a fridge/armory made me laugh when I imagined it in a movie scene format.

I had ridiculous amounts of money in Fallout 3 - in my second playthrough, I ended up with something like 50,000 caps after around 150 hours of gameplay. And yet, I always made sure to pick up everything I could so that I could sell it later....

I had 999 million credits in Mass Effect. At level 60, every enemy gives you like forty-thousand when you kill it.

Rome Total War. by the end of my Scipi campaign, I had most of the countries on my payroll. I didn't have to do any of my own fights.

RPG's typically allow you to end up with millions of units of currency by the endgame.

Final Fantasy VII is probably the most liberal entry of the series when it comes to doling out the gil; there comes a point near the end of the game where the mastered materia will just start rolling in, and a lot of it you won't really need. This stuff sells for literal fortunes: a single mastered 'All' materia sells for 1.4 million gil, and you're likely to end up with several of these. You can easily get around ten million gil by the game's end just by tooling around the world levelling up, not even trying for it.

In my most complete playthrough of the game, I had been fighting hordes of the rare final dungeon enemy and series regular, the Magic Pot, with a mastered Gil Plus Materia stuck on one of my guys, and this very quickly maxed out the money bar with a solid row of 9's; I believe the cap is 1 under a billion. And you know, I bet I could still blow the wad of it on Sylkis greens alone.

Morrowind was another. I was best friends with that damn mudcrab, and judging by the number of times I had to rest a whole day by the little sucker, I probably spent as much time with him in game days as I did doing everything else put together. All told, my wealth eventually reached more than a million drakes- I can't even estimate the number, as once you get more than a million, your gold count is just listed as '1M' in the inventory.

It's also totally pointless; there isn't anything you could ever do with that money in the game aside from buying back the countless tons of equipment rotting in that mudcrab's inventory, and if I wanted it all back that bad I'd just kill him. But, to quote one of my Internet heroes, "[gold coins] are shiny and they make a nice jingling sound when you have lots of them."

I've yet to not max out my money in any Pokemon game I've played, so the total amount combined must be the most I've ever made.

In terms of real life, I made $30 for writing a review of MLB 10: The Show

Star Wars Galaxies. I had a dedicated Armorsmith. I had a ton of money from sales, but when I liquidated my resources when I got out of the business, I had to buy another account because I couldn't keep that much money on my toon. I'll never forget that auction. In the last minute I was refreshing the auction thread as quick as possible and every time had a dozen more bids. Took me an hour to figure out who won what. Now that everybody has left the game I'm sure the amount I had isn't all the impressive now, but at the time I could buy pretty much anything I wanted and not notice the dent in the bank account. :p

I currently have between 450 million and 500 million HL in Disgaea 3, and I'm not even close to finishing the game.(assuming a 999,999,999,999 money cap I'm also nowhere near the max amount of money)

In Mass Effect, I maxed out my credits without even trying to because of all the crap I accumulated in the scavenging for every single piece of equipment I could find.

In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, I did some Vigilante missions in the Hunter, got to Vigilante level 200 or so before I got bored and stopped it. I ended up with a few billion dollars after that, added on to what I already had.

I went out of my way to spend whatever money I could find in Bioshock because if I didn't, I'd be stuck at $500 for the whole game.

A friend of mine downloaded a mod for Fallout 3 that gives him a village of sorts at the bttom-left of the map and he can build things kinda like an RTS, he can choose to have waves of enemies attack it, you get the idea. After he sold all of the stuff he looted from the corpses after triggering a wave, he had about 160,000 caps.

Mass Effect 2.

Everytime I walked in a store I found that I could afford everything from fish for my aquarium to model ships to weapon and tech upgrades to armor and I still had enough to go buy myself a few drinks too.

I have NO IDEA where Shepard gets all that money.

EDIT:
Also, Saint's Row 2.

Fallout 3, Saint's Row 2, Oblivion have all been mentioned, no one has mentioned Borderlands yet. On the first play through I had reached the cap and just wasn't even picking up the guns since I didn't need the cash.
