Half-Life. What the fuck were Valve thinking with that whole Xen section?! Blergh.
God, do I have to agree. Confusing clusterfuck of maps, bulletsponges enemies (combine that with sparse ammo dumps), screwy gravity, impossible platforming, killer plantlife, and difficulty of finding your way forward.

Bioshock mirrors System Shock 2 in that way.

Once you've dealt with "The Many" / "Andrew Ryan" respectively, both games go downhill pretty fast. The difference is that with Bioshock you've got hours of frustrating, boring, plotless grinding to do (all while one of the most pathetic charmless posturing moronic villains narrates the journey in a "LOOK HOW EVIL I REALLY AM!" low-pitched growl that would, if ever actually used by a human being in real life, provoke gales of laughter. Yep, it's that f--king bad.) Plus an escort mission.

In "System Shock 2", once the Many are out of the way, you've got a trip down a corridor and then the final boss (who can unfortunately be defeated in about thirty seconds if you have any idea what you're doing). Yeah, it's an incredibly lame way to end the game, but up until that point the game is great. Come to think of it, the same is true of Bioshock up until Ryan's death, the problem being that this is MAYBE two-thirds of the game in total.

Really, the only one I can think of is BioShock. So...much...padding... *twitch*.

To be honest, I rarely actually finish a video game. I do get quite far in most games I play, but it takes a game being really good and interesting to keep me playing until the end. Chalk it up to the short attention span, I guess. Or just my undying love of Mass Effect 2 and Kingdom Hearts 2.

Speaking of which, the people who stated Mass Effect 2 as a suggestion for this thread...were we playing the same game? Because I absolutely loved the Suicide Mission in Mass Effect 2. Seriously, it's probably in my top five endgames of all time. (I even tolerated the final boss.)

Mowing down Collectors like petunias, getting to see your favorite squad members in action, the awesome music throughout...every part of the Suicide Mission screamed "Awesome."

I just hope that ME3 has just as awesome of an endgame.

Hmmm I hate the boss sections, but I actually really like Xen. I know I'm probably unique in that respect, but a LOT of "Half Life" unfortunately consists of "Look for the way forward" and it's not exactly signposted well.

The bit where you first enter Xen - where you come through the portal in the main room - is absolutely breathtaking.

Mass Effect 2. I love the game easily one of my top 10, but the bullshit it pulls after you recruit Legion pisses me off to no end.

Oh I just recruited a highly badass Geth who has some of the best lines in the game, and who's best weapon is the specialist sniper rifle. But instead of doing something reasonable like I don't know waiting until all loyalty missions are complete to activate the final mission that, if you delay to ensure your team's survival, causes your entire fucking crew to die.

I swear to god how the hell does that make it through game testing.
You can have everyone loyal and save your entire crew though, I've done it before, just make sure that you do all the loyalty missions that are available to you before the Reaper IFF mission, then as soon as you activate Legion do his Loyalty mission then head straight for the Omega 4 Relay.

Just remember the Reaper IFF mission, once you start that its the point of no return so make sure you do everything you need before going on it

I wholeheartedly agree with everyone who said Bioshock. Escort missions? Really?

My other big one is Uncharted 2. I like the adventure and ruins exploring enough to tolerate the shooting. Then you hit the monastery where there's suddenly three straight hours of nothing but shooting. I especially loved the part where they send snipers, riot shields, and those heavily armored guys with shotguns who are indifferent to your 60 bullets sent into their face across a bridge at you when all you have available is 2 grenades, 60 M6 bullets, and whatever pistol ammo you have. And how no matter how thorough you are in clearing an area, there's always one guy hiding behind a pillar waiting to shoot you in the back with a shotgun. I also love when you sneak through one big courtyard stealth killing everyone in sight, until you hit the armored guys and learn you can't stealth kill them when they laugh off your attack and shoot you point blank with a shotgun after you ineffectively bumped into their back. The only thing that let me win this part was the AI going after invincible elena while I shot them in the back

Ah I was so close but I had to get ninja'd at the last post. But yes I agree. I also love how Elena tells you to be as subtle as possible but then the game sends a ton of guys for you to shoot anyway. It's kind of hard to care about stealth when you know there's going to be a huge firefight anyway.

I would say Dues Ex: Human Revoluion but it mainly sticks to the Dues Ex formula! In the first game you could save before the end and still experience all 3 different endings! The same could be said for Invisible War!
As others have stated, Mass Effect 2 was dissapointing as you pretty much fought a reaper version a a sentinel from X-Men!
Alan Wake's ending was also rather confusing as it just made the story more convoluted than it needed to be!
One of the worst has to be Knights of The Old Republic II's ending! As great as the story & characters were, the ending finished on such a cliff hangar, it's one of the reasons why everyone is clamoring for a Kinghts III!

LOL I bet you had a grand time playing Uncharted 3.
I never had your problem playing Uncharted 2 (or at least, I never really stopped to think about it) but I got extremely frustrated during a few sections in Uc3.

OT: Gotta agree with Deus Ex Human Revolution. Final level/boss/ending was a bunch of hogwash.
Condemned 2 is also a winner.

On the flip side, I completely disagree with others mentioning Mass Effect 2. Yeah the final level was really annoying with all those frickin husks but I absolutely loved the final boss and ending.

Rayman Origins springs to mind as I have just turned it off before I got too pissed off with it the post game stuff is just a bit rubbish re doing old levels just to get some few things that you dont really care about but need to open the last level in the tree and those tresure chest chase levels have just gone from fun and challenging to extremely harsh and tedious im not sure I will bother getting the last two teeth.
If you cant manage to get the last two teeth you will be absolutely pissed at the bonus level.
Think, the last level but several times harder... and no checkpoints.
Anywho, right now i'm annoyed at Dead Space 2 for making the final "boss fight" an absolute *****. If theres a zombie apocalypse im dismebering all the five year olds before they can get up and swarm me in packs of about 20... in my head... while a dead lady yells at me... several times. >=(

Well, not great, but Crysis was a half decent shooter with a few fun ideas (suit, the way weapon modding works) until some halfway through the game when the game turns towards being about aliens. At which point, your suit, fancy weapon modding and brain get thrown out of the equation and you're given an infinite ammo Gatling gun and told to shoot swirling flying Matrix squids.

Crysis is a great example of this, starts out as a beautiful, open, interesting shooter and degenerates into dull squid fighting. And the zero gravity section. Yeah fuck that bit.
Oh look, I'm not alone. I can get behind the zero gravity section though, it had the right idea of being creepy and somewhat interesting. It dragged on for too fucking long, but I liked the whole feeling of "holy shit, I need to get out of here and fast and I feel like I'm lost". It really made me feel like I was in an alien spaceship, cause the things there weren't generally hostile, but didn't feel friendly either. I was unsure if to open fire the whole time, fearing it'd get the whole ship running after me (not to mention, I got to that bit with not a whole lot of ammo, so it felt extra survivalistic).

Indigo Prophecy. I loved that game when it was just this psychotic tale of murder and character.

But then...well yeah, anyone who knows about the second half of that game knows why I didn't like it.
The "Jumping the Shark" bit was at the amusement park, methinks.

I could have even lived with it, but it has the same problem as Twilight: How does something that's technically dead get a sex scene? HOW?

So yeah, Indigo Prophecy. A perfect example of what running out of money will do to you.

Assassin Creed as well was disappointing, mind you I did manage to beat Robert...by running a wide circle around the area while my sync refilled

Ending Spoiler for those who missed it...
Al Mualim was the 10th Knight Templar, and uses 'Bushin no Jutsu' which apparently the Apple of Eden grants you...meaning you have to assassinate him multiple times...

and at the end, the apple of eden reveals all the fragments of eden around the world at that time, very epic ending, just pain in the RECTUM getting there.

Any Quantic Dream game ever(even Omikron), you'll love them in the beginning and hate them by the end.

Also, Golden Sun 2. It doesn't get RUBBISH by the end, but I just feel it gets less fun once you get to the West, with a brief reprieve at Jupiter Lighthouse. Maybe that's just me though.
I'm pretty sure it's just you; I thought the game was solid throughout. I guess the ending was a little weak (thanks to clumsily handled exposition earlier in the game), but that's pretty much my only problem with it.

I'm going to go with Final Fantasy V. The game is GREAT, until the final boss suddenly declares "Screw the rules, I have green hair!" and insta-kills my entire party. No, it's not scripted, and I didn't forget a key item; it's just a move it has, and I have NO clue how I'm supposed to block it. It's just cheap, stupid and frustrating.

There are a couple of games that I could name, but one in particular takes the cake by far: Fahrenheit.

Never before have I played such a brilliant game, that turned into such complete nonsense half-way through.
I don't know what Quantic Dream were smoking when they were developing it. It's as if they knew that they had the premise for a great thriller, so they decided to do everything in their power to undermine that with a stupendously moronic plot twist.
I'm surprised that Heavy Rain doesn't feature a major plot twist half-way through the game, in which it is revealed that the killer is actually a rogue AI program, and that the world is actually a virtual construct, because, you know, that's totally in-tune with the rest of the game.

Indigo Prophecy.

And pretty much anyone whose played it has to agree, or else they're lying.

We go from interesting psychological paranormal murder mystery to Dragonball Z...and not in an at all cool way.

What games have you played that were great for most of the game, but then during the end of the game just completely lost it?

I've recently been playing Assassin's Creed, but I rage quit (today in fact) in one of the last memory blocks. The game was fun, doing all free running, assassinating, merging into crowds, going into the shadows....

....until the latter half of Memory Block 6, in which I'm suddenly expected to swordfight about 20 opponents at once, several times in a row, not being an Assassin at all just some epic swashbuckler. On my fifth try of *that* Templar fight, I just gave up. Going to have to YouTube the rest of the game before I get to start AssCreed2 which is a massive shame :(
Did not care for Assassin Creed 1, but enjoyed Assassins Creed 2 and then the end shat on it... Mass Effect 2: Final Boss made it less enjoyable... There are many others just cant think of them at the moment.
