What are a couple of games this gen that did not sell well but were considered great game and have a cult audience? And no this is not a hipster thread

Alpha Protocol has been building up a small community of followers, much as I figured it probably would since those sorts of games typically do. Beyond that I can name a few indie titles that have build up proud little communities for themselves, but few I'd call part of 'this gen'.

I would say Minecraft and Amnesia : Dark Descent, but then both those games sold well. Although I'm not entirely sure how you judge Minecraft sales :s

Alpha Protocol is one of them, and quite deservingly. Get past the faults, and there's a solid game in there.... somewhere, deep down...... Very hard to find.

I think Alan Wake and Deadly Premonition fit the "cult following" label the best, though Deadly Premonition is rather poor on the execution front.

I want to say Borderlands but I'm not sure if the following counts as "cult"?

Also Demon's Souls I know has quite the following.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm pretty sure these games sold rather well actually.

This generation is too recent to have a cult following, cults thrive off the irony of liking something "obscure" and since everything this generation is easily available, it's not far enough from the general public to have the cult status.

Well there's mushihime-sama matsuri which is rare and goes for about $2500USD atm ( the same rarity can be attributed for a lot of cave special editions like the Akai Katana one.) There's also game which are just nearly impossible to find in certain countries like Blazblue cs2 because of its DRM system.

Cult isn't all about indie things and obscurity. Quentin Tarantino is well known, and has a wide appeal, but there's definitely a cult following of his films. You probably wouldn't be able to find me someone who doesn't know Star Wars, or Star Trek, or Harry Potter, but they each have cult followings.

OT: Most of mine have been mentioned. I'd also probably throw BlazBlue out there too though.

Definantly had to be Deamon Souls, sold dreadfully outside of Japan. Maybe it had something to do with the ultra insane difficulty. Once you got past it's thumb blistering difficulty, insane boss battles and lack of check points it was a pretty good game.

I thought LBP and Heavy Rain actually sold well. Though what counts as selling well? I really have no clue.

I'd say Alpha Protocol. It has a lot of the "cult following" characterstics: poor-to-average critical reception, sales so poor that it killed any chance of a sequel, but there are many of us who just love the game to death despite its flaws. You get more choice in it than you do in Deus Ex: Human Revolution (not knocking that game, just using it as a benchmark of sort).

I'm going with alan wake . Because i found the game to be original and very very well written and interesting . Also when ever i mention alan wake to anyone in real life , no one has a clue to what it is .
