I hope people who are reading this thread actually know what atmosphere is exactly. But ill throw the bone and give you a textbook definition:

"A surrounding or pervading mood, environment, or influence."

So, to give a couple of games iv played that have a great atmosphere in my book:

Bioshock

Mass Effect

Stalker

Fallout 3

Yeah, i probably said half the games you guys were going to mention >_< but anyway.

So to summarize, what is a game that you think has an amazing atmosphere that really helps you immerse yourself into the game?

Metroid Prime.

The Environment, Gameplay, Creatures, and Music all create a truly amazing Atsmophere.
For me at least.

Fatal Frame and Penumbra. They are the types of games that have me afraid to move even when nothing is happening. Fallout 3 had a great environment as well and, to me, was the most immersive game I've ever played.

Bioshock and Portal are both games that are great at establishing atmosphere, particularly Bioshock.

A video game none of you are probably familiar with, Boktai, I also enjoy the atmosphere of.

Just because no one has mentioned it yet, Cryostasis. God damn did that game just ooz atmosphere, you feel cold to the bone and truly alone when playing that game. A ghost ship in the middle of the arctic is quite the haunting place it is.

Fallout 3, Bioshock, Portal, Dead Space, Metroid Prime, etc. There's plenty of games with great atmospheres out there.

EDIT: 300th post!

Fallout 3, HL2, Condemned, Afraid of Monsters.

I go for "Crippling Emotion" more than anything else in a game.

Bioshock definately. I just wish it could do anything else. As for games that aren't up there, um, I heard Silent Hill 2 has that.

In before Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 2

and Silent Hill 3
(yeah I know it's about a silly evil cult but it scared the Jesus out of me)

and this may sound weird but Tales of the Abyss
{a JRPG? Atmosphere? you must be out of your mind.}
say what you will but the game was really well put together and I never got taken out of the experience.

- Bioshock: sheer awe tinged with horror.
- Penumbra: mystery, apprehension.
- Amnesia: Vulnerability, apprehension, absolute mind-numbing terror.
- The Path: Not sure how to describe this one.
- Homeworld 2: Space done right.
