Demon's Souls, fantastic atmosphere.
YES! 100% Demon's Souls atmosphere is just... perfect. Every single world has it's own unique feel and atmosphere to it, but between all of them you get that overarching feeling of being alone and vulnerable. And when playing online, getting invaded or summoning allies just adds to the whole thing, because that's all possible thanks to a fundamental aspect of this lonely world... you just can't die, really. You become a phantom and can keep going... it's an incessantly lonely experience. Especially since you can't chat with other people.

KoToR just had...something. I don't know how to explain it, it was just amazing. It felt perfect, especially on Manaan. Something just felt...right there.

Bioshock.

I had nightmares about it, and you all know the part I'm talking about.

Ok ok...i got the atmospheric part a bit wrong. :p
Please never say that you are wrong again. I'm just tired of that word and all of derivatives. You were never wrong, you just accepted the definition of "atmosphere" in a different way than me, so you weren't wrong in the first place. I was just sharing my view, mainly because no one ever bloody talks about AoM. Anyways, do you still play AoM?

Silent Hill 2: You're in a foggy, lonely dacaying town that used to be a beautiful place that you and your wife loved... until she died. She sends you a letter telling you to go there, and what happens next is pretty much the dictionary definition of good story telling and atmosphere.
Portal: You're a test subject, alone in a research facility with a derranged A.I. who could kill you anytime she wanted to, but chooses not to.
Bioshock: You're in an underwater city, with lumbering monstrosities, horrific little girls, insane residents, a man who wants you dead, a man who supposedly wants to help you, and a woman who wants you to help others.
Penumbra: You're a single physicist whose mom dies. Your dad sends you a letter, apologizing for being dead and geving you a key to a box in the bank. In the box is notes about a place in isolated Greenland. You go there, and you find an old mine/temporary military bunker. Horrific things are chasing you, but you are armed with... nothing. you must run. You only have one friend down there, and probably one of the few friends you've ever had, and those of us who've played it know what happens to the poor guy *shudder*. If you haven't played it, trust me, his fate is worse than you think (in a way).
Condemned: First one, that is, although while Bloodshot is awesome alone, it doesn't fit in with first game. You're a cop whose been framed for murder by a serialy killer who kills serial killers with their own M.O.s. However, you're also going crazy or something, so what is probably a normal guy appears twisted and horrifying to you.

Going to have to toss my hat in for RDR as well as for Arkham Asylum. I can't believe I'm the first to mention that too.

You're either talking about Dr. Steinman (I'm probably misspelling his name) or Sander Cohen.

Blue Toad Murder files. Yes, I am serious. Not a scary atmosphere or something, but more of a fun one, where no-one is normal except for you and your mates (if you weren't goofing around, which is quite hard not to do in that game :p but still)

Now, how did this happen? All the games I could immediately think of for this have been spoken EXCEPT ONE.

Why is nobody mentioning Shadow of the Colossus? Atmosphere was definitely one of its strong points!

Metro 2033 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.214459-a-Taffer-reviews-Metro-2033] stands tall amongst other atmospheric games. Even with the mediocre shooting mechanics, which might just add to the atmosphere if you look at them from the right angle.

... then there's the Thief games and System Shock 2.

Silent Hill 2, I'm pretty sure that entire game was just atmosphere. Also Chrono Cross. Great scenery and score.

Yeah, get it for PC and not for console, though, although it's quite demanding. From what I've heard, everything from the AI to the combat functions and graphics are worse in the console version.

Since all of my top choices have been said already I'll just say The Witcher. The music, the NPC's, the world design, everything in this game lends itself to a wonderful atmosphere. It's one of the few games that does dark fantasy well.
